I'm 76 and go out almost every day and take pictures. a walk without a camera is boring. I started taking photos in 1963 and there are some cameras I regret not having any more but I love digital. I really wouldn't feel like doing all the darkroom work. and I don't have to worry about the cost of film

I have forced myself going out on my lunch break every time I work. A lot of days I haven't gotten anything good tbh but I have gotten better with time. You never know what will happen in the streets too.

What do you use during your lunch break? I've been struggling to bring along my XT4 just cos it still is a bit cumbersome.

Totally agree. Photo books are the best! I just got the koci Hernandez book from eyeshot. It took months because of supply shortages but it was worth the wait. ✌️

Outside is raining all the time but after watching this I will take photos now :) with umbrella of course. Printing out some of your best photos and sending to friends is also a good advice.

As a self-taught, commercial photographer (freelance for the last 22 years and before that a director of photography in publishing) I find your two suggestions true. Those pics you had published are great. Basically, how can you take a nice pic if you don't have your camera with you? When I was in NYC (moved to Chicago three years ago) I once lived in Chinatown and I always took my camera out with me. Eventually, I decided to do a series of portraits that was inspired by a random shot I took one day on the way to the subway. BTW, I still to this day test / shoot on my days off, constantly. These shots, the test shots, are really what get me hired vs the work I do commercially.

Great video, thanks Ulysses...and I'd love to see as many photobook videos as you can stand making. I really like how you discuss what you love about each image, as well. Also...looking forward to the story of the R5... :)

Yes for a photobooks video. May be in the format of photobook guru, set-up pionneer Alec Soth lol. A pound of pictures btw, pretty amazing book.

Taking a camera with you at all times is a big one, and one of the reasons I switched over to a Leica M…but recently and partially because of you I decided to go dig out my old point and shoot and get a used Canon S90 to always take with me. With the advances is denoising with DXO DeepPrime it’s brought new life to some of these old cameras and having a camera with me (I just don’t like shooting with my phone) at all times as practice has been a real boost. I thought carrying around my Olympus XA would do the same thing, but with the cost of film I found myself not experimenting or even taking a shot with it when I carried it. The S90 I have no issues with experimenting more. And DeepPrime is truly magical on old Canon Raw files.

Really enjoyed this Ulysses. And often enjoy when you talk about photography, the creative perspective of focal lengths, layers etc. I remember you once said that when you first got into photography you eventually went farther than your peers ever wanted to hehe. Am at that crossroads now.

Interestingly I would view photography practice as being both input and output. Input because even on bad days of photography practice, we subconsciously take in lessons learned from the experience.

You can actually start a series where you explain the frames that a image has. I'm interested in it. And if you get enough support for that content kindly make some.

Really good insight. I keep doing the output but not really receiving any input. The thing is, I do have a couple photobooks but I haven't really studied them. I just got them because "Oh! It's Moriyama Daido!" or "Oh! This is the type of photography I like." But the problem is that after I buy them, I just put them on my bookshelf and leave them there. 😅

I don’t go out in the rain or snow because I don’t want my gear getting damaged 🙈 But I have respect for those who say fuck it and do it anyway. I saw Eyeshot on Ivan Chow’s channel too. It looks like they make nice stuff. Although, I can’t help but feel that photos are ruined when they’re spread across two pages. A big crease in the center is really a problem for me visually and really takes away from the photo. Apparently I’m relatively alone in feeling this way because most people don’t seem to care, although I noticed you did point it out in this video so maybe you see what I mean.
