Thanks to the Cold War, plenty of surviving Wehrmacht military from soldiers to generals had opportunity to publish their memoirs in the West, with no one to check their claims. If you add all the Soviet tanks and personnel "destroyed" in this stories, you would wipe out Soviet tank production and population several times over. To this day wehraboos believe that Axis forces were vastly outnumbered on the Eastern Front, and that's what caused their demise, while in reality they were more or less the same, and Axis had advantage of surprise.

The second action where Carius claims c 20 IS-2 is completely made up. It simply did not happen and the account by the commanding officer of the Tiger Unit is printed at the back of the book. He makes no mention of the second action and also attributes the kills Carius claimed all for himself to several Tigers.

The IS 2 mostly got success due to its large numbers that were fielded

Its big gun was both its best asset and drawback. A good hit, even from a HE shell, could easily ruin the day even for a Tiger II. But the heavy two piece ammunition was very slow to reload (at best 2-3 rounds per minute,after the first few round it would slow down even further) and it could only carry 28 rounds of main gun ammo, Meanwhile a Tiger 1 could fire at least 6 rounds per minute and could carry more than 100 rounds of main gun ammo. The IS-2 had very thick, but also poor quality armor. Non-penetrating hits from German high velocity guns would cause pieces of armor to loosen and ricochet inside the tank and maim and kill crew members. German AT gunners and tank crews testified that the crews of the IS-2 would often bail out as soon as it got hit.

The gun on the is2 was inaccurate as an antitank gun beyond 900meters. That’s a significant difference between the effective range of the tiger1 which was between 1500-2000m or the tiger’s 2 at 3500m, in combat conditions. Not only that, the IS2 could carry just 28 shells, inadequate for any operation.

Of course they micromanaged their troops it all depends on what you call "micromanaging" When one side gives the orders and the other side is expected to follow them, the natural tendency is for the side that has the power to give orders to give an increasing # of orders with greater scope and micro-managing becomes SOP. Delegating that to subordinates or calling it "training" doesn't change what that is. Of course, up and down the chain of command there is a certain rebellion against this, and ultimately superiors have to rely on subordinates to carry-out the orders given to them, but many battles were lost by insubordination which was then used as a justification for more micro-management, and just the same many battles were won through insubordination which was then used as a justification for further insubordination. It's hard to be either obedient or insubordination if one dies in battle, likewise up the chain of command it is difficult to remain in ones place if ones actions result in the loss of significant battles or significant resources required to even have a chance of winning a battle. So in the end it all plays out and the concept of "micromanagement" becomes fluid. But does it happen? Of course it happens. It's a wonderful thing to survive a war and be able to write history as one chooses.

Hence, instead of building many "budget" tanks they opted for less but "high tech/high quality" tanks. They knew even before the war broke out that each one of their tanks would be fighting at least 5-10 enemy ones. Look at the number of tanks when Germany invaded France... France had way more.

The Tiger 1s flat armor is not a design flaw. Nor was the tiger plagued with weak spots. The Tiger 1s armor design allowed for armor angling, which worked in the Tigers favor to deflect more powerful rounds and the Flat armor allowed for better crew space so they could work more efficiently.

I've read accounts where in early 43 the Russians captured 10 new TIgers on rail that never saw combat or abandoning as many or so due to the rapidly advancing front with the logistic and fuel issues they had. Losing Tigers like that seems to me to be even more disappointing.

Bigger disappointment here is that there were multiple soviet tanks staying idle, with crews hussling to man them, so there was at least a chance to capture the machines untouched.

I wouldn’t say the Tiger wasn’t as tough. Similar armor thickness but the Tiger had very high quality rolled nickel steel armor which was very hard and durable. Soviet armor was cheap. Also the Tigers gun mantlet is 120mm thick, in addition to the front turret being 100mm thick. That’s 220mm of protection. Don’t forget that tracks can be mounted to the front hull as well.

IS-2 never was meant to fight tanks, it a heavy breaktrough tank, it was designed to destroy fortifications like bunkers, not to fight tanks.

Well, people tend to bloat their results a bit, especially so called "German Aces". I don't say that they weren't really fucking good, but it is a well known fact that after battle reports often had bloated values, that were bloated even more in Nazi Germany war propaganda.

Git good, Otto Carius himself said he never counted his kills and that they were exaggerated. As I said, the actual after action report cited 17 T-43s (T-34s) and 6 Stalins. The other version could have been a translation mix up. The editor clearly didn't check properly.

Western allies can the Sherman 75 crew found why's to pen a tiger front and used smoke shells to make the tiger crew abounded the tank the Sherman received modification to fit a 17 pounder gun it can pen a tiger front at the range of 1000 and the 76 it also can pen a front of a tiger the Sherman Crews have to worry about anti tank guns not tanks the 75mm gun did very good job agent's anti tank guns

Both american 76mm gun and the british 17pdr could easily penetrate the front of a Tiger. Not to mention the fact that during the war it was quite a common practice for allied tank crews to fire HE or phosphorus shells against german tanks which could break the armor after a few consecutive hits or put so much stress on the crew that the germans would abandon the tank. You dont always need to blow up the tank to take it out of the fight :) And when Pershing arrived in Europe the situation changed drastically - Pershings were absolutely destroying Tiger tanks in 1v1 situations :)

That's when you wrong. German standard of classify tank was different than all other nations in WW2. They decided by tank's main gun caliber. That means IS-2 is super duper heavy by its 122mm main gun, double size vs 88mm on both tiger Is or IIs. Panthers and Tiger Is were born as an answer to T-34s swarm, they meant to destroy as much tank as possible while IS-2s were not. Their main purpose was heavy arty support for infantrymen. Yes, even Tiger I had no chance in sniper mode, they acted far more better in close and personal style. That's why in brilliant commander's hand, their outcome can surprise us all. One more thing that Western Allies can easily penetrate Tiger I by 1944. Even the long 76mm on Sherman can do it decently (dont let "Fury" lie on you, Tiger I armor's no longer so invincible), not to say the 17 pounder on many types of tank in UK army.

Tiger I was better than any western or eastern tank and it was best tank of the war because there was only 1500 or so made yet they destroyed much 88 on Tiger 1 was too much for any enemy tank not to mention longer 88 on Tiger 2 or 7.5 long barrel that was on Panther. Nothing that allies had could stop that. 5000 shermans was destroyed and there was not even great tank battle on western front When there was Ardennes offensive and when shermans came face to face with spearhead of 400 panthers and tigers, then US decided to send in europe Pershing tank which was only real proper US tank but obsolete by that point because it was same as tiger one with little better armor and Tiger 1 was first on battlefield in late 1942. Britain lost 15.000 tanks and soviets lost 44.000 T-34 during the war and they had many models of other tanks Late sherman had armor weaker than PZ IV except one version (maybe Jumbo) that had lot better frontal armor but still any german antitank cannon could pierce it. Even weakest of them that was on Stugs III and PZ IV. Gun could barely destroy Tiger only from close while Tiger could destroy any sherman from 2000 meters. Best medium tank of WW2 was PZ IV or Panther if you count that as medium but i think its more heavy. Sherman was worst tank ever. If they got shot they wouldn't escape because they would be burning. They were flammable as gasoline. Sherman died in 1957 while T-34 is still used today. And T-34 was good only because high numbers. Sherman was obsolete, junkyard vehicle that survived only because allies had air superiority. If they didn't, allies would be decimated. What kind of tank cannot survive one hit? Sherman can't 1944 when germans destroyed many of them those who experienced only penetration without being destroyed but their hull inside turns into shrapnels that killed the crew. US maintenance just filled hole with metal and put new paint job and they send tank out again no matter that they knew crew wasn't safe. When from power of blast interior of sherman was broken and its debris killed the crew many times. Sherman couldn't survive anything. Weakest gun that germans had on their tanks was too much for sherman. 88mm gun that was on Tiger 2 or Nashorn would be overkill for sherman. 7.5 gun on Panther was way too much for IS series and sherman stand no chance. Normal 88 from Tiger I was also too much. Sherman survived only because germans didn't have support from air so they couldn't work as they would if they were in air superiority Firefly was trash. Since sherman is such lame product that gun made it slow and they would be destroyed not even seeing the enemy. Tiger I survived fire of IS-2 which had lot bigger gun than firefly.

That's good you can admit it. We have a tendency to downplay their technical accomplishments even though that same thing repeats itself across a vast number of fields from small arms to civilian technologies.

Yeah, heros attacking sovereign countries, murdering men, women and children, destroying cities and villages. Not to mention their highly efficient death camps. Heros indeed. I guess from the same league as the Russians invading Ukraine.

Learn the history of the tank battle near the Polish village of Lisow where Germans 501 heavy tank battalion (which included tigers i and tigers II) was destroyed in one battle...On the web, including Wikipedia, they broadcast not the truth about 60 destroyed IS-2 tanks, which were not in that battle! Because on the Soviet side there was only one battalion of T-34-85 tanks, which lost irretrievably 4 tanks.

Rod Jarrow, That does not negate his point about Tigers and Panthers taking out IS-2s. The Tiger I appears to have had a better record against IS-2s than the reverse. Not just this battle but Tarnopol, Targu Frumos etc.

I remember that. He called their fire, took hits to I.D. their position, even getting hit himself. Then flanked them and drove over the top of their artillary! Talk about cahonees!! He also destroyed an entire British column of artillary and tanks single handedly using one Tiger I Tank, that wasn't even his regular daily driver as his was in for scheduled mantenance. He was rapid firing the 88mm canon literally from 15 meters away as he drove along the column. The crew reported the noise to be indescribably terrifiying, even from inside their Tiger as the shell obliterated the units at such close range! There must of been scrapnel hitting the tiger and all. If I recall correclt, he received Oak Leaves to his Iron Cross First Class for that.

But it wasn’t. As much as people say that the Germans made the best AFV’s of the war, it just isn’t true. Since we’re talking about the Tiger 1 here I’ll keep it to that, even though the Panther was famous for it’s atrocious reliability and readiness rates, which were often below 20% in some areas, the Tiger had similar problems. The engine was prone to random fires as the fuel lines were notoriously unreliable and often sprung major leaks, the transmission required a very skilled driver to operate properly, if a driver did not handle it just right, it would foul, the interleaved road wheels were a maintenance nightmare, not to mention that the HL230 simply wasn’t powerful enough to adequately power the Tiger, another issue, was the quality of the steel and of the welds, especially later in the war as production quality began to lower. Major cracks would form in the armor from HE hits from guns as low in caliber as 85mm, welds would break despite not being hit directly. All of this is separate from the disastrous state of German logistics during the second half of the war, leaving them chronically short on fuel and spare parts, leaving literally hundreds of Tigers abandoned on the sides of roads all across Europe. None of this is to say that they didn’t also produce some good designs. The Stug’s being one of the best assault guns of the entire war. So no, your precious big cats were not war winners by any stretch of the imagination, they were mediocre designs let down even further by faltering logistics and poor battlefield decisions.
