@@donepearce In my youth I could work with a tape measure to a 1/64th occasionally less. Sharp young eyes and a well cared for tape that was never allowed to snap back and cause any streaching or damaging of the tip. Regular inspection as well. I was trained that way. Made others shake their heads in disbelief. Taught by the best to be the best.

I need to make that very thread for a big vice restoration I have on hold as my lathe will not cut that big, I also need to make a nut too with the same thread as both the shaft and nut are worn badly. nice work, now I know how to get a wider thread without using a very wide tool.
@TomokosEnterprize10 ай бұрын
It is a Whitworth thread used in many hard used tools like the lathe, vices and other like minded things. If you have the machinists handbook it will give you all the info on hand grinding the tools shapes and depth, etc. Good luck. These are my favorite threads to throw on a shaft. Wide, deep and strong.

This guy has no idea what it is to be a machinist, giving measurements with a compass speaks very badly of him, which means that his work is of the lowest quality. Although it can be seen that he can turn on that machine and half operate it, it does not mean that his work looks good in that type of places, quality is the least important thing, tightening the chuck with a lousy tube, the tool holders full of welding all a disaster

If you knew a little more you would realise it is the end product that matters, not how you got there! Many jobs don't require sub micron dimensions, especially if you make the mating part. If one only used the very latest machinery and techniques one would need to spend a fortune and some folks economies are unable to support such expense. Give the guy a break, it's not how I would work or perhaps even be allowed in some parts of the world, but when needs must, as they say.
