Two simple things you can do to be in awe of your figs. I don't grow 200+ varieties for no reason guys.
1. Water less to improve brix
2. Let them ripen longer

This is good to know because we have been getting at least 15 inches of rain every month since march so the few figs that have been ripe, were kinda bland. I love Bass (TreesOfJoy) I have purchased many figs and pomegranates from him and they are doing well here in central FL. zone 9b. Thanks again for all your great videos!

GREAT fig video! I did not know about waiting for the figs to ripen longer. I didn't even know about them swelling! I am SO excited about the 50+ green figs on my trees right now! I have about 30 Fig varieties in the ground but I want to start lots in pots too. THANK YOU for your great videos!

Keep going, Jan! Let them ripen longer.You'll be surprised! But again some varieties don't do well in the rain, so you'll have to consider that when picking.

Thank you for sharing your experience here. Various American videos on the net, give me the impression that people in the U.S. have a different way of evaluating the qualities of figs. In the Mediterranean area, the best figs are those that are freshly harvested, ‘just ripe’, a little moist from inside, and of reasonable size. The inside must show a regular pattern and there must not be any fruit ‘syrup’. In dry areas of the word, it is normal that the sweetness is not a great feature. Some kids love sweet fruit, but adults have a more mature approach. On the internet it seems that no one mentions the best temperature for fruit tasting. During the early hours of the day, all fruit taste far better. Figs in particular are a little crunchier. Admittedly people have different tastes but from what I see in vegetable markets, people do not have a preference for soft sweet figs. Furthermore I would like to note that the name of a fig tree species is not enough to rely on. I have experienced the same species planted in different zones, and generated different flavoured fruit. Colour and taste varies according to the environment. The sun and the nutrients affect the fruit. A strong belief is that fig trees with roots in underlying rock produce better fruit.

Never mind. Found this on ourfigs.com, answered my questions I think: naldc.nal.usda.gov/download/15714/PDF , ...Stage I - is characterized by a very rapid diameter increase and slower rate of fresh and dry weight, with almost no change in sugar accumulation. ...Stage II - is a quiescence stage that is marked with almost no change in fruit diameter, dry and fresh weights, and sugar content. ...Stage III - is characterized by accelerated rate of increase in diameter, in fresh and dry weights, in water as well as in sugar content. During this phase of growth, over 70% of the total dry weight and 90% of the total sugar content is accumulated in the fruit. Breba Figs: Stage I ... Spring growth to quiescence (stagnant stage or stage II), 7 - 8 weeks Stage II ... Quiescence stage 2 weeks. Stage III ... Ripening 2 weeks. Main Crop Figs: Stage I ... Rapid growth to quiescence (stagnant stage or stage II), 5 - 6 weeks Stage II ... Quiescence stage 3 - 8 weeks (depending on the fig variety) Stage III ... Ripening 3 - 5 weeks.

Grapes are very similar. It is bad for a wine vintage if the season has too much rain, especially late in the summer close to harvest because the grapes are holding more water and less juice.

@mr.chaosvicious5968
@mr.chaosvicious5968 5 жыл бұрын
I guess what he is talking about in the video about too much water in a plant and its fruit is why Ice Wine is such a highly prized type of wine. The grapes are actually allowed to be hit with a frost after fully ripening and are then harvested and processed into wine. After the frost has forced the grapes to draw water out of the fruit and increase and concentrate the sugar content inside the grapes to actually protect them from being frostbitten. Thats the way that it happens from what I understand anyway.🤔 Also,we have a humongous fig tree on part of my grandmothers property that has been there since she bought it back somewhere in about 1967 to 69. We have NEVER,EVER watered it and it does just fine and always has tons of sweet and ungodly good figs about the size of ping pong balls AT LEAST. I have pulled one open before and I can promise that they actually have so much sugar inside them that they can actually make your fingers and hands ridiculously sticky. Sometimes they will split open and the juice that oozes out of them is about the consistency of honey or maple syrup and the bugs have an absolute fit when that happens. And we live down here in Tennessee and it can get hot and dry AF down here and it does just fine. The only real problems we actually seem to have is actually getting to them when they are ripe before the bugs,deer and the birds can. They absolutely love them and will totally clean us out if we aren't careful enough. The lady I used to work for used to beg me to bring her some whenever I had a chance to. She had a fig tree as well but they were not as big and apparently not as sweet as ours was either. If I brought her a lot she would can it and make her some canned figs or preserves for later and put it on toast and biscuits. 😡 God dang it.... Now I have done gone and made myself hungry talking about those figs and grapes....😆

Hi Ross.This was very informative. I just bought my first two fig trees this Friday (Brown Turkey and Celeste) at Whole Foods. I have been wanting to plant figs and when I saw the trees I was in a route to an event. I came back two days later with the intention of buying three but they sold out of the Italian Honey Fig. really wanted that one the most. I have watched your videos before and have always been impressed with your extensive and exotic collection. Now I have to subscribe. I live in CT and am thinking I need to put them into my unheated garage with some type of insulation. How should I over winter them? Someone saw me selecting the trees and said he leaves his outside and wraps them in bubblewrap. The floral personnel said "I wouldn't do that if I was you. Bring it into a garage and water it once a week." I want to put the trees in larger pots but am unsure what type of soil mix to provide. Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Excited to learn about successfully growing figs!

Diba, Potted figs need to be brought inside or into a garage for the winter. Keep them above 20F, but below 50. They will remain dormant until spring. Then you put them back outside.

that is a myth. I don't know how this started, but figs grown from cutting do not have a Taproot. Instead they go out horizontally and stay shallow. Often 2x the width of a normal tree's drip line. I know plenty of folks in various parts of the world with figs right up against their house that have been there for years. No problems.

I have a very Large Turkey Fig Tree that is growing next to a chimney of my house. It is the only one that I planted that is close to my home....Planted also several other cuttings years ago in my yard and they really took off....Just be careful cause if you plant to close to your house and not trim the fig trees and you have a heavy wind Or Storm it will NOT be good for your house 🏡 and will be terrible 😥 for your Fig Trees....Fig trees need a larger area to grow in so they can spread their Beautiful branches out....Do yourself a Big favor and save yourself a Big Headache. Your Figs will LOVE ❤ you for it in the coming years ahead. MOVE THEM NOW while they are young from being that close to your home....DO A TEST...Leave a couple where you have planted them now against your house. You will later see that the move was a GREAT 👍 Idea and you will have very HAPPY 😊 Fig Trees and you will also be HAPPY 😊 and will Reap a Great Abundance of Beautiful Delicious Figs for many years....

I'm in 8b/9a Sacramento area... we have 3 different figs in the ground (all from cuttings). 2 are starting to produce this year, and are delicious, but the other one seems to have the same kinds of issues Garry's does. The fruit it produced both last year and this year is very dried out. It does not have good flavor, either. The tree doesn't look stressed. It was from a cutting, from a cutting of a tree found in an old abandoned area. ((( You know, down by Dry Creek, so it was dubbed the Dry Creek fig, until farther ID could be had, by someone in our local rare fruit growers association. LOL))) We also have figs in pots and those are watered at most every other day, when it's 100+, so I'm guessing Garry, you need to move those babies into a spot the pot has a bit of shade. We have used coffee bags draped over tomato cages to shade smaller trees, as they don't need FULL shade, but gives a canopy in the most intense part of the day.

"figs replace seafood that's way figs got the same equivalent of a oysters" you ever ate a oyster ? seems ya landlocked people dunno much about seafood or like you got some veeery strange fig varieties around .....gnhh, the horror.... with fig cuttings stoneage people started agriculture more than 10 000 years ago in that region but was a bit less dry back then down there here in Germany the most likely place to find feral ones are the floodbeaten riverbanks of the Rhine …. guess letting reproductive pieces of yourself get washed ashore somewhere else, just the quickest way to gain ground for a plant that doesn't produce true seeds in our wesp-free area, but it (and many other rivercases elsewhere in Europe) showing that they can thrive also under such conditions

wait, I know where your oyster misconception might derivates from : not that long ago it was common to associate certain properties with certain foods, some due to their effects on the body, some just by their look a even longer time ago figs and oysters were both associated with a certain female body part and with fertility…. the latter one pretty important for ancient folks… first one also.... in ancient roman times the fica (latin for fig) was also a very common and "telling" gesture and so popular that we find fica-fists for instance in the form of little charms/pendants all over the place ….place of dem romans quite enlarged and culturally affected also your old sassanid east but believe me, when it comes to taste there are *ABSOLUTELY* no similarities between oysters and figs ! I live direct at the oystered northern german westcoast and grow plenty of different fig varieties in my garden and definitely know what I’m talking about
