Even the most experienced swimmers can find themselves in a situation where something has gone wrong and they start to drown. That's why it's crucial to know what to do and what NOT to do in this scenario. One day, this knowledge might save your life.
For example, when a person is drowning, they need to fight not the water but their instincts. The thing is, when somebody feels that they aren't in control of the situation, they start to flail as hard as they can. By panicking, they make themselves submerge deeper and deeper. As a result, they get exhausted quickly and can't stay afloat long enough to wait for help. Do you wanna know more about it? Then watch the video!
TIMESTAMPS:
Some statistics about drowning 0:41
Don't panic 1:05
Tread water correctly 2:54
Float on your back 4:09
Breathe in medium-sized lungfuls of air 6:02

SUMMARY:
- With regards to the US, there were approximately 3,500 unintentional fatal drownings a year from 2005 to 2014. This means that approximately 10 people lost their lives in the water every day!
- When somebody feels that they aren't in control of the situation, they start to flail as hard as they can. By panicking, they make themselves submerge deeper and deeper. As a result, they get exhausted quickly and can't stay afloat long enough to wait for help.
- Let's see how to tread water correctly. Your body has to stay upright, and your head should be above the surface. You need to move your arms and legs to keep yourself afloat. You can use your arms and legs together, just your legs, or just your arms.
- Remember that one of the most important things about treading water is being calm and breathing slowly. This way, you won't get tired and will improve your energy efficiency as well.
- The second way to stay on the surface of the water until somebody comes to rescue you is to float on your back. This is the best way to calm yourself and breathe normally.
- When you exhale a deep breath, your body sinks into the water more deeply. This happens because the difference between the volume of air inside and outside the lungs is too great. That's why the best way to stay afloat is to breathe in medium-sized lungfuls of air.
- Don't hold your breath! This will lead to a build-up of CO2, and this won't help you. On the contrary, you'll get out of breath much sooner.

man, years ago when I was a kid (can't remember the age but I was young) I forgot how to swim and jumped straight in to the pool, next thing you know I'm sinking and just trying my hardest to keep my head afloat. that was honestly traumatising for me, what's really strange is I knew how to swim, I was obviously so young I forgot. Swimming is natural for me, and I always thought why don't people float on their back, until I remembered that memory! I actually completely forgot it happened, kind of wish I repressed that memory hahaha but I actually understand why people drown now, it's literally panic. funny how something that traumatised you, doesn't become a fear if you actually face that fear. if I hadn't of touched water since then, I know for a fact I would have had a fear of deep water.

I drowned once as a teenager. The boys who rescued me didn't realize anything was wrong. I couldn't cry out because every time I tried water got in my mouth. Teach your kids at the pool that drowning is silent and not very much splashing
@EastmanEditing
@EastmanEditing 11 ай бұрын
This is so important. When I almost drowned in a wave pool, I was silent. I had a moment of clarity where I saw a ladder and somehow managed to doggy paddle over to it even though I was little and could barely swim. I started climbing out and the lifeguard yelled at me at first and said I couldn't use it, then she saw me collapse and cough up water and she rushed down and helped me. She kept saying, "I had no idea you needed help, I'm so sorry!" This would've been the late 90's, and I really hope training is better now! I know how to swim well now but I'll still never completely shake the fear of drowning because of it!

Advice on how to not panic would help people I think. For me, floating on my back helped me calm down so I could use my arms to paddle back to shore while floating on my back. Not seeing how far I was from shore helped me stay calm enough to get back. I'm glad I figured that out before things got too bad.

Yesterday, I got drawned into a deep pond, and I had no experience of swimming, even I had not even gone around ponds or rivers. But accidentally yesterday I slept over mud and drawn into the pond, I had no idea what to do, I just stopped my breath for at least 1 to 1:30 mins, and there were some of my friends around me but they didn't notice while I was drawning, It had been left up to 3 min, my friends noticed that I was not around. One of my friend jumped into the pond and searched me for more than 1 min. Then he found me and lift me over the water. It had been more than 4 minutes, I have drawned into the water, my eyes was remained open but, I was not moving or speaking, I was completely unconscious, they pushed my stomach and removed water, one of my friend immidiately called my father and my father and my uncle took me to the hospital, in half of the road I reacted and gave some movement, at that time I was thinking that I was dreaming, my father was beside me amd trying to talk to me, but I was not able to identify his voice as I am 90% unconscious, now I am in hospital and I am curing.. Thanks to my friend who came tp save me. If it was one min more late, I don't think I was survived.

If you're a swimmer (of any style and proficiency level) you should train to extend your endurance. Most people focus on speed when swimming, but in open water endurance is critical. Try alternating styles to prevent muscle cramps and sores, stop to rest whenever you feel tired, don't fight currents straight on (swim diagonally to the water movement) and don't try to ride on top of the waves unless they're too wide to swim through on a normal breath. Generally the least tiring swim style is breaststroke, with slow backstroke as the sore preventing alternate. If you're mainly a crawler, slow down your foot kicks to preserve more energy and rest often in the back floating position.

Luckily, I was also smart enough to backstroke to shallow waters while that was happening back then. But now that I am older, I know more tips to prevent that from happening in the first place. Never doing that again. 😕

I’m watching this video because I came close to drowning today in the sea of Lanzarote. I did exactly what the vid tells you not to do ‘panic’. Although I wasn’t waving my hands and only shouting help I became fatigued very quickly due to a fast current. With the tide pulling me away from the boat I became more desperate and began moving my arms and legs erratically. I quickly began to breath and swallow water as I struggled to stay above the water. To cut a long story short, if it wasn’t for someone knowing how to rescue me in time I probably wouldn’t be here now, typing this comment. I feel scared of this possibly happening to me again but after watching this and knowing the support of my friends I will never put myself in that position again.

When my nose and mouth go under the water, my brain freezes and I naturally panic as I cannot breath. It's like the brain presses the Emergency button and takes full control of my thinking and my lungs. I remember, using my hands to purposefully hold the nose and mouth closed so that no water goes in, but as I submerge more, more is the panic, more is the difficulty of keeping my lungs under control. Its very easy to just say "Don't Panic", when the brain doesn't let you stay calm, its a different story. I remember taking my swimmer/acrophobic friend on the edge of the terrace of my building and telling him to stay calm, he would freeze as he would go close to the edge of the building. Panicking isn't something that you do consciously, it's the brain taking control of your body completely and leaving no space for you to think or act. I have heard many many lectures from my swimming teachers and friends to stay calm and how to "naturally" float. But it's just too impossible to explain what's my brain doing when I am under water. One way to explain the hydrophobia that I have, is, say, I submerge you under water and I take full control over your body and your lungs, I purposefully use your body to first make you submerge under water(cause you don't have control) and then I purposefully use the lungs to pull air(water) in while you are under water. You would fight the urge to breath by using your hands somehow to cover your nose and mouth, but I am more powerful, I use my power to force you to pull air(water) in, and stop you from surfacing, what would you do in such a situation?. I know, I know, you would tell me that I have to fight that monster inside my head, I have heard that a lot. I have tried a lot to get rid of this embarrassing disability. It stops me from going anywhere near water, it's like putting a person fearing spiders inside a cell full of tarantulas. I have no words how to explain this, my fear wouldn't just go away by typing away on some KZfaq video, I have tried a lot, and I am not giving up either. As I type, I feel like, venting all of my anger and frustration out on the head my elder brother, who picked me up and threw me in the deep end of the swimming pool when I was barely 10. I know, that I can't undo that terrifying event and that I have to fight it out somehow, but it's just feels like the most tiring and frustrating thing in this world. I just wish there would be an easier alternative, but I know there doesn't exist any such alternative. I am powered by my dream of swimming under water some day and I will make efforts in that direction constantly. I wish I don't become part of some just-another-drowning-statistic during this endeavor. 🤞

For any adults who want to learn to swim.... Nitro Swim has a really awesome series of adult swimming lesson videos on KZfaq... I highly recommend them as a supplement (or even instead of) your lessons. So many commenters say how much more helpful the video instructor is than their in-real-life swim instructor. Good luck, you CAN do it!

At least you're not sinking into the water (if you aren't a good swimmer). And you can still yell. But if you know how to swim you can raise a hand out of the water while swimming, so learn to swim to do that.

Well, most of the time the lifeguards are used to unconscious swimmers floating on their front and/or back. But if that is the case, you can just swim on your back to shore or shallower waters to get control.

There have been 3 times where I have almost drowned. Of those 3 times, which is how I survived is to remain calm and be aware of what your body is doing. Notice actions that make you sink and actions that make you float eg moving arms upwards makes you sink and thrashing your legs also can make you sink too. I've never really been one to float on my back in these times even though I learnt from an early age but I managed to stay afloat with treading water. What every you are comfortable with.

I notice the panic comes when you try to stay afloat and there are waves to to over come that may wash water over your face, if its in the ocean then salt water adds to the anxiety causing one to clear thier eyes from the salt water which may be irritating for some. I find that when one is calm yes you have control but the minute you encounter high wave that washes over your face anxiety starts to kick in

I was drowned at a river. It was a moment of deep darkness,silent. When u touched my feet to the down of river (8feet) i pushed my body upwards and shouted for help. My yelling helped to gather peoples attention and again i submerged. Without any oxygen left in my body. Because i shouted for help as i rose above water. Finally at last few seconds of my life.I experienced a push with hand towards nowhere.anf i was above 2 feet avove water and another boy came and took me to shore . That was the most precious moment of my life and i have taken oath to learn swimming.

I was thankful I watched it because a few times i found myself in that situation and things would have gotten worst if I panic.

@WaxPaper
@WaxPaper 3 жыл бұрын
The thing with treading and floating in this context is that you wanna be comfortable enough with water to take a wave or take a mouthful of water and recover. If you panic too easily then it's all for nothing, because you won't be able to control every little thing. So you really want to practice being in the water, knowing what it feels like, even to mess up. I would be pretty surprised if someone survived in the water just from watching a KZfaq video like this. If you're worried about not being able to survive in water, you gotta get in the water and learn how.
