In this video Ronald Kanne turns 2 platters. One using vacuum and one using a normal chuck. Turning a platter/plate/dish is fast and easy.

Platters is one thing I'm thinking of making to see if they sell. I having been woodworking in 3 years because I had no way to get the proper wood stock. This past winter I figured out how to get the right stock. Now, back to woodworking!

I love turning Ash. Here in the US, many of our Ash stands have been decimated by the Emeral Ash Borror. Such a tragedy. We still have two healthy Ash trees in our yard. The Ash that grows around here is called Green Ash. The wood is bit darker than what you are working with, but has the same straight parallel grain when quarter sawn. I also love ash crotch wood. Your instruction and demonstration on platter turning was very informative and helpful, thanks.

Hi Ronald, Lies. Congrats with your 1000+ subscribers! Well done. Again a nice video. Not only the making of the platters (with and without the SuckChuck) was very interesting, also the footage, Lies. Very nice camera work. Great tip to do the push cut for a nicer finish. Let me also give it a go. Btw, I’ve ran out of mother in laws but the last project, was very well received by other family mebers! Cheers, __Frank

Hi Ronald. (I’ve made purchases from your shop. Nice to put a face to a name.) Nice to see the two different techniques. That center pin is a clever addition to a vacuum chuck. When I was taking a course in Maine last year, we a sort of guide stick to help center platters, but there was no real control - only patience and a steady hand. And Thanks for the tip on reversing direction for that climb cut. Clever. Cheers from Paris.

It still surprises me that people have sliding headstock lathes and they don't use the slide so you are on a short bed lathe rather than on a long bed lathe. Maybe because that is the reason I bought my first sliding headstock lathe.....

Yet another inspirational vid and yet more questions. Read all the comments to see if the answer is there but no not this time. On your push cut you change direction on your lathe but if someone's lathe only goes one way does that mean the Turner needs to change sides to achieve a push cut or would you recommend not doing this as it could stop access to the stop button. PS love how you explain how to do if you don't have all the new or latest gizmos.
