Thanks! Yes, a friend of ours mentioned that as well. They use it on a lot of the new HH cats. It and a few others are PE/EVA which is a huge difference over the EVA. We gave it a shot, learned our lesson. LOL.

@SailAwayVlog Not only good woodworking, but the doors are esthetically pleasing to the eye. I had jokingly made a comment about leaving the "blue" tape on. For me, a little blue trim would look nice. 👌

I design energy systems for yachts for a living. I have done several electric conversions although I don't recommend it for most, I also service the systems quite often. I'm also very familiar with your boat although I haven't seen one converted to Ev. The system you have spec is horribly underpowered for your boat. That's less than 35 horsepower total you will have to push the boat. You have wide hulls windage. I've seen a lot more dissatisfied conversions than happy ones.

So many highs and lows but you are still out there! The knowledge you have acquired over your time on the water has made you self-sufficient. I can't imagine your situation being reliant on mechanics for everything. You would need some very deep pockets. I know it has to be a pain to be fixing broken stuff all the time, but I do enjoy watching you succeed. The day the generator ran was a biggy!

Thanks Doug! Yeah, that was a biggie. And I have to say (as I literally knock on wood...does Murphy read KZfaq comments?) that it's making me a little nervous that I haven't had any big fixes to make in quite a while...I'm cringing as I wait for it. Lol

Lots of work lots of pennies. If going electric will the motors do regen when sailing. See the Whyns.
@SailAwayVlog
@SailAwayVlog Ай бұрын
Yeah, the motors we're using have that ability. With most boats it's a matter of enough sailing to really create a useful amount of regen. We'll find out!

@SailAwayVlog
@SailAwayVlog Ай бұрын
Thanks for watching it yesterday! After we published it we noticed that quite a few of the prices were off. For example things that should have been $800 were listed as $8. And since this video is all about the numbers and giving a realistic view on what you might spend for a refit, we made the decision to take it down, go over the numbers with a fine tooth comb (many times) and republish it with the correct info. Sorry for the confusion!

Yep. Oh, and lots of cars now. Oh wait, I forgot bikes and scooters. Shoot, also cruise ships and cargo ships. But you're right - only for golf carts, cars, bikes, scooters, cruise ships, cargo ships and planes. Definitely no sailboats. ;-)

I honestly don’t know. I’d be inclined to say it probably sails pretty well. Privileges of those days, like most cats, were focused on sailing characteristics. Unlike newer cats with such wide hulls.

at what point do you worry about mast (boom) degradation (decay) on a 40 yr old rig - going to look at the 1988 39’ privilege
@SailAwayVlog
@SailAwayVlog Ай бұрын
Anything over 15 years old or so, I'd say a really close inspection is a good idea. Not so much the mast and boom themselves, especially on a Privilege...they made 'em stout...but definitely the standing rigging. Depends of what may have been upgraded or replaced. Even really old rigging can be in decent shape, but someone would need to go up to look at all the terminals to check.

Zero chance I would put electric motors on that boat. For the same reason I don't have an electric car. I can't fix it when it breaks.
@SailAwayVlog
@SailAwayVlog Ай бұрын
That's definitely true regarding an electric car...no way would I try to fix a Tesla. Lol. Not true with an electric drive boat, particularly how we're doing it. Any "fixes" on this type system are easier and simpler than on a marine diesel. The motors themselves are maintenance free and extremely reliable...they have 7 total moving parts all sealed and contained, so there's nothing there to fix or that ever really needs to be fixed. Very very rare for the motor itself to ever be the problem. The rest is plug and play components and all pretty reliable as well. The electronic motor controller is the next most expensive to the motor itself, about $1200 (just a small electronic box you unplug) also rare to go bad, a charger is about $500, battery cells are less than $100 each (when you build your own bank you can monitor and potentially replace any bad cells as simple as replacing a car battery). All the rest is simple displays, wiring, DC/DC converter, etc., each component well under $300 - $400, all things you simply plug in and there's really not many of them. So a "fix" on this system would typically be replacing a failed component by unplugging and plugging in a new one. And if you've owned boats with diesels, you know you could spin wheel of a hundred potential issues and the fix or part to replace will easily be in that $100 - $500 range with $1200 or more not being uncommon.
