Today on Susie's Cooking Show, 2 and a half Year old is continuing her lesson on maple syrup! Last week we learned where maple syrup comes from (Watch it here: • Discover How Maple Syr... ) and this week Susie is learning how to make home made maple candy.
Maple candy is super easy! All you have to do is boil some maple syrup and get it to about 236 degrees Fahrenheit, let it cool a few degrees and then pour it into some molds.

The most important thing to have is a good candy thermometer to watch the temperature. Make sure you are constantly stirring the syrup so it doesn't scorch. I let Susie stir with her oven hits on, but once the maple syrup was hot enough to burn her, I took over stirring and pouring for Susie. Please make sure you are always monitoring your child near a hot stove, and don't ever let your child stand near something that could splash or burn him/her.
We used this opportunity to refresh Susie about dangers of hot stoves. She's had many lessons so far, but if you are letting a child near a stove, make sure what ever you are cooking isn't at risk of splashing on your child, and talk to them about stove safety first. We used Susie's play kitchen as the first lesson and she has been watching us cook for the past year. I recommend having a 2nd adult hold your child's hands at a safe distance while you are cooking so your child can observe until your child is old enough to cook safely. Use your best judgement and don't assume your young child won't touch the stove. Never leave your child unattended near a hot stove and never leave the handles of a hot pan where your child can grab them (like hovering off the edge of the stove.)
