What an adventure! We jump in a little plane to see a bit of New Zealand by air. Our new pal JP has been flying since he was a kid, heard we were in NZ and offered to take us for a spin. I actually got really bad motion sickness from the flight and it wasn’t until we went sailing that I’d made a come back… But it was totally worth it. We hope you enjoyed the sail! See you again soon. Elayna & Riley. Also don't forget to checkout JP's KZfaq channel below! / @the_candourist

This video was posted in 2017. I’m in 2019 making this comment. I found this channel at ep 200 and watched a few before I decided to go back to ep 1. I’ve now made it to ep 75! Yeah me! I love your videos because they take me to a different place without leaving where I’m at. I have A LOT or responsibilities so it’s tough for me to get away. With your videos I get to escape for a few minutes at a time when I have free time to watch. Thank you!

Riley and Elayna are smart business people. JP would have been checked for authenticity and entertainment value long before any face to face. Elayna was as safe as in her Mother's arms. The risk was theatrical but it was good to build a little tension and get some dialog going in the comments section. Well done video.

As JP was taking off at the end and Elayna says, He's struggling... I smiled looking to see what he was doing... and he did what pilots like to do - get a few feet in the air and come up to speed and then... pull back and give a little show of a steep climb out.... and he did~! Beautiful. :-)

AWESOME video guys ... and brilliant meeting JP ... a fellow African here. Unfortunately I've never visited South West Africa ... but do believe that it's an incredible place with phenomenal Wildlife like ours here in South Africa. :) I'd definitely fly with someone that I'd never met before ... but you'd never catch me going out of sight of land (any land) on a yacht. HA HA :) I've only sailed around Durban Harbour, but have flown in a helicopter to work in the Maluti Mountains (Lesotho) for a day, plus taken a few joy rides in small planes ... but never that small. WOW! Such a neat plane man! THANKS A MILLION for sharing that phenomenal experience with us. Totsiens from Durban xox

You quarried bout regarding flying with someone you don't have any history with.... just recently i recalled as a child, around 12, going up with a neighbor in his twin Bonanza .. flying low over our home, and the sea.. then later in life learning about his inner battle with depression, alcohol abuse.. and realizing we flew only on trust, and some degree of 1st impressions.. life is delicate and not always availing itself to accurate examination

I know two people who have crashed small planes. One of them taught aeronautics at a large prestigious college and was a flight instructor with hundreds of hours in the air. Another friend of mine owned a small Cessna and talked me into going up with him one day. As he walked around doing his preflight check, I sat there amazed at how much this airplane resembled my 1965 VW (this was middle 1970s). It didn't take me long to step out, excuse myself and vow never to do that again :-)

Great video, I'm a long time fan of your videos'. Living in Canada, far from the ocean. But I do fly small aircraft ( hobby pilot ) as do many of your fans who commented on this video. I had a feeling someone would take you guys for a ride in a small plane. Enjoy every minute of your youth while you can. You never know what you life may bring you. I used to travel the world in my 20's, but I had a son who is severely dissabled, and now my life has changed to caring for him (24 /7). Your videos keep me positive, when I'm feeling down. I'm even thinking of taking sailing lessons on one of the lakes nearby this summer. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us. Best of luck with the new boat!.

@@andyp91 Thanks for the comment Andy. Alot changed in my life, in the last three years since this video. I still watch La Vegabond videos, and enjoy them! But I had an opportunity to take my flying to the next level, and I'm working as a Dash 8 pilot commercially! I was out of work with Covid layoff, but I'm back to flying again starting this week. My son is doing well, and we've found some amazing people to help us every day, so this year has been much better. I still want to take sailing lessons one day.

Hey, I have recently discovered your channel and absolutely loving it! It is certainly making lockdown 2.0 here in the UK much more exciting! To answer your question at the end, yes I have! For our family holidays, my parents would always take us on road trips around Europe, sleeping at campsites along the way. I always asked the question of why aren't we flying, completely obvious, at the time, that an adventurous route is much more exciting than direct flights. Anyway, for my 12th birthday, my family gave me the present of flying for the first time in a little plane, very similar to the one in your video, just myself and the pilot. I was sat next to a Portuguese pilot, doing loop the loops! I remember being equally as excited and nervous about the experience and now 14 years later, I would definitely do it again!

been following you guys since almost episode 3 release, very nice couple lately started feeling like you guys are turning this into a reality life show rather than a sailing one.

What great fun watching her fly. Just joy and happiness mixed with a bit of apprehension but still enjoying it. Keep on, keeping on.

Great stuff. I jump out of airplanes for fun. Flown a lot of them also. The air is a great place to be. He's right though. Sailing and air sports compliment each other. Think about a sail boat turned sideways healed way over flying through the water with her keel and through the air with her sails. And doing so at the same time. Can't wait to see you on the cat.

I'm sure you are aware that a sail properly shaped by the wind is in fact an air foil and works the same as an aircraft wing. So actually you have been flying all along.

I think actually the plane is sailing, rather than the boat flying.

Sails fly and boats float. Planes sail but only when they are flying.

Yep - there have actually been a few "sail boat" designs with rigid air foils instead of traditional flexible sails that were built and work quite nicely. As I understand it they are more efficient in terms of harnessing wind power, but less forgiving in rapid shifts, and unlike a traditional sail if they break you can't do a patch job to keep limping along until you hit port. Plus, they're super expensive.

Sailing downwind is where the difference between traditional rigs and more efficient rigs is most apparent. With traditional rigs, the wind is pushing into the sails and the maximum speed is obviously less than the wind speed. High-performance catamarans had much lower hull drag and would "tack downwind" with the wind flowing across the sails giving lift - just like an aircraft wing. They'd travel a greater distance, but the difference in speed was dramatic. Even with a soft sail, the A-Class catamarans that I sailed could sail faster than the wind speed. We used an aerofoil shaped, over-rotating mast to give some of the benefits that you'd get from leading-edge flap on an aircraft wing. Solid wing sails or "wingsails" started to appear on C-Class catamarans sailing for the "Little America's Cup" in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It started off with extended masts with soft sails and quite quickly went to solid sails. The wingsails became very sophisticated with multiple sections that could be rotated and offset from the adjacent section. You could control the slot between the sections. The next time you land in a passenger jet, look how the wing changes shape to give more lift at a lower speed. The rear-end opens up to have multiple sections with slots between them. We were doing all of that with wingsails in the 1970s with one major difference. We did it in both directions. ie, in aeroplane terms, we did it upside-down :-)

I would have absolutely gotten in the plane. So many once-in-a-lifetime opportunities missed by fear of what might go wrong, rather than excitement about what will go right. You obviously have to take steps to mitigate danger, but fear is the antithesis of adventure.

Riley & Elayna I came across your videos by mistake and I am hocked on what you two are doing" Traveling the world" I have a son that works at the Scenic Hotel in the Bay of Islands. We actually received an E-mail from JP as a suggestion as a birthday present for my Sons 28. As we live in South Africa and love the wild life. Seeing you fly with JP my son would have done it. Good luck with the new Cat and can't wait to see the Videos. Fair winds and safe travels from wild Africa.

I would definitely take an opportunity to fly in a plane where I get the experience of adventure by flying it with the pilot. Once in a lifetime opportunity and sometimes a leap of faith in a stranger turns out to be a lifelong contact and friend! Congratulations on your experience Elena and Riley, I truly enjoyed this episode! 🤗👏👏👏🙆🤗⛵🛩

It also has very good performance for it's size, 1300 fpm climb rate is better than most larger general aviation planes. It can also take off and land on a dime.

There are many short take off and landing airplanes. I personally would hesitate to buy Ukrainian at this moment as that country is pretty war torn. But it has got a distinct very high visibility window setup. If it's safe and easy to maintain is not known to me, but would for myself be a concern. Beside that, it's quite pricey for being from a low wage country. I personally also prefer gyro copters over fixed wing for safety and comfort. Plus that you can have a gyro with full features for the same price as basic fixed wing from this company.

The Foxbat is a joy to fly, feels fantastic on the controls. And like others have said, it's STOL performance is hilarious. There's a video floating about of someone using the width of a taxiway to take off.

This was a fun video and yes I would go flying with someone I just met. The reason being that they are trained very well in order to get the license and they don't want to die either. Seems like a really cool guy. I really want to fly like that someday. I'm 61 I guess sooner than later.
