When I left Vermont after living 20 years in Norwich, the whole state was filling up with New Yorkers, Ct.,Mass., and RI, and the first thing they want to do is change it to look like where they’re from. Plus you have to be wealthy to live there. Vermont is nothing like it was in 1990 when I moved there from Pa.

OK, you did include Middlebury. I taught at the college in 2000-2015, and still go to church there on KZfaq. While there, I spent weekend days driving around the state, enjoying the scenery and the various towns. I didn’t visit enough towns to join the 251 Club of people who have visited all the cities and towns in the state. I agree with most of your selections, but like the other most favored lists, you focus too much on towns around Burlington. There are many areas of the state that you folks ignore. That said, thank you for sharing!

I grew up skiing at Stowe in winter and spending summers at our family house by Lake Willoughby (still do) Vermont is like my second home state. I’m hoping to retire there although 300K is way beyond my means. Hoping I can find something small in my price range.

I lived in hubbardton, in Rutland county VT from 2003-2011. Made the mistake of leaving and now I'm struggling to get back. I need a place to live and I have family there so that's my goal. I've been existing in pa since 2018 and I'm hoping 2023 is the year I go back! If there's anyone out there who wants to help my hubby and i's dream come true, please let me know.

Haven't been there yet, but it's on my list now. The Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium looks awesome!

I think there are PLENTY of places in Vermont better than Montpelier since there are quite a few duplexes and homes that are in disarray with piles of trash around, however it is the ONLY state capital with no Wendys, Walmart, or McDonalds, so they definitely pride themselves in the small business life which is great. Another affordable area in Vermont is the Northeast Kingdom where you're paying about half of Burlington's prices for the same acreage, however besides the scenic natural beauty it is EXTREMELY rural out there.

Enough with the "plethora" of plethoras. How about "numerous" or prodigous or even -- many?

houses are ridiculously overpriced, and im pretty sure realtors lie about their being offers higher than asking. In the past year it has just gotten stupid. 280,000 for a house that went for 50,000 in 1988. Nothing done to it in the meantime only gotten older, and rattier. It lost physical tangible value, but they make it sound like there are no houses available. There is. They make you think if you don't put in a big offer today it'll be gone tomorrow. It won't.

There isn't any best place to live in Vermont unless you have a ton of money. Taxes are high, properties are expensive, the school systems are so far behind compared to other States. Vermont is a beautiful State for fall foliage and if you a drinker, at least 3 bars in each town. Vermont is full of scenic back roads that intertwine thru the State, but you have to be cautious because these are the same roads non licensed drunk drivers travel with cars, trucks, ATVs and motorcycles. There are beautiful looking lakes in Vermont, but since I've lived here all my life, I wouldn't swim, boat or fish in any of them. Picturesque Stowe Vermont is beautiful, but most residents are from out of state and are snobs who think they own the town. High rate of pot growers, sellers users in the State. Crime is increasing. We do have one benefit, only 2% BIPOC residents in the State. Need I go on more?

Thanks, this was needed. Yep, me too I feel for VT, I'm originally from France. Ilive in Maryland. I have friends in VT, and sure it's one of the most beautiful place in the US, but visiting with a budget and enjoying VT as a "tourist" is one thing, living there with an average salary is another thing. The more I look at VT the more I realize it's an artificial state, maintained by Boston, NYC and wealthy people from elsewhere.

@@PhilippeOrlando Sad that it's become that way. Been in Maine, NH, and VT my entire life and seen the gentrification happen. Colonials and cottages that have been in families for generations are being torn down for giant McMansions and 5 over 1 apartments. Burlington and Portland are the biggest examples. All New Yorkers buying the homes and land, and they certainly aren't from upstate NY either.

In Warren VT, where I lived for a dozen years, the home of 3 ski areas, there are several amazing horse farms. The standard of living for those lucky horses easily exceeds the human standard of living across our great nation.
