If you think that Mortal Kombat has the exclusivity of bloody finishers in fighting games... you may want to watch this video to discover some worthy rivals!
Fatalities are a means of ending a fighting game match by gruesomely murdering the loser. It was popularized as a finishing move performed at the end of a match in Mortal Kombat. It became part of Mortal Kombat’s DNA. Every game had to have at least one Fatality. But that wasn’t enough. Midway began adding spinoff finishers like Friendships, Babalities, Animalities, Brutalities, Hara-Kiris, and so on.
Mortal Kombat was an unprecedented success in the arcades of the early 90s, a clamor that was mixed with a great controversy with the arrival of the disturbing saga to home consoles. Many companies, seeing the success of the franchise created by Ed Boon and John Tobias, tried to replicate its formula by creating countless clones, with unevenly results.
But some videogames did not remain mere copies and tried to improve Mortal Kombat's proposal, introducing their own rip-off versions such as No Mercies, Overkills, Executions and Claytalities. A torrent of gruesome imagination more typical of the most twisted gore movies.
In this video I explore in depth the history of fighting games, in search of the most brutal fatalities outside the Mortal Kombat saga. Finish him!
In this video you will find:
• A game curation showcasing the most brutal fighting games that rivaled Mortal Kombat franchise
• Information related to each game such as release date, developer company, game genre and system it was released on.
• Official game box arts with a 3D presentation.
• Educative and/or critical comments on the importance of the video game and why you should play it

⚠️ All gameplay recording, game curation and opinions included in this video, as well as editing is completely done by me
Bits & Beats creates videos about the history of video games. In this channel you'll find comparisons, retrospectives, technical analysis, but, mostly, game curations with the idea of having an important task of preserving video games, and make them relevant to society at large.
Curation isn't just about digging up neat games, but it's also about preservation, interpretation, and using one's knowledge to make it relevant to people. With my videos I want older gamers to look back and remember the influence of video games on their lives, and new gamers to understand the larger context of the series they're playing for the first time today.
I put significant time and creative effort into each one of my videos, including research, digging into archives, playing video games and recording hours of footage, selecting specific clips, writing reviews for each title, and making a very careful video editing in the way to transmit both educational and entertaining values to my audience. Every video takes a lot of hours to produce, because I strive to give my audience a consistent, high-quality content.
Fidelity and preservation of the video games is essential in Bits & Beats, so the recordings are made with the highest bitrate quality. It is done this way to preserve original game look and sound through modern footage, with no superfluous additions. I recommend you watch the video at 4K and 60 frames per second to get the best possible viewing experience.
I hope you enjoy my videos and find them useful!

With few noticeable exceptions, most of these games demonstrate how misunderstood Mortal Kombat actually was back in the day. It was much more than just bloody spectacle, it had genuine effort put into it: it was one of the few fighting games that actually cared about story and about fleshing out it's characters, giving each one of them their own identity, as well as having unique dark and sinister atmosphere created by it's stages and soundtrack. Other games lacked those important factors and instead only focused on carnage, which is why most of them became forgotten almost as soon as they came out, while MK survived to this day.

Only a few of these are actual failed attempts to clone Mortal Kombat. Many of these games were misunderstood in their own right. Time Killers was the first to do what it did with in-battle dismemberment. It was also a really dope game. Survival Arts, while it was certainly inspired by MK, was its own game entirely, a cult classic at that. Eternal Champions was one of my most pleasant childhood memories, and the first game was tuned to competitive balance. The sequel didn't give a shit about that and just added more fatalities, a broken combo system, playable animals... Still fun though.

This is a nice list and there were even a few games that were new to me in there. The ultraviolent fighting game phenomenon was quite a mixed bag. On one side you had great games like Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side, Weaponlord, Killer Instinct, and Samurai Shodown V Special; on the other side you had garbage like Time Killers, Way of the Warrior, and Tattoo Assassins. The 90s could be pretty funny.

All I knew is that I had it, and between games like Cosmic Carnage, Knuckles Chaotix, and Blackthorne, I absolutely loved the thing. Mortal Kombat was the beginning and fame of intense violence in fighting games. So it is actually surprising there were much more ripoffs that tried to mimick the game's most popular factor, which actually was the reason most of th were forgotten so quickly. Samurai Showdown, Red Earth and Eternal Champions proved that ther is room to innovate or offer some good content, while the rest simply fails and focuses mostly on intense gore. Mortal Komabt was awesome not only for it's prerenderized graphics and violence, also it's eerie ans fitting scemario and well written and developed characters and story that stays interesting even to this day. And my god to think that Naughty Dog actually did a MK clone before breaking the sales with Crash.

@@wyldelf2685 yes I'm aware of that mistake. I just added it because it was on the video (which the video itself mislabels it as an MK Klone). Honestly Samurai Shodown is just a unique fighting game of its own. Just a Frankenstein consisting the mechanics of King of Fighters, predating the weapon base combat of Soul Calibur, and the gore of Mortal Kombat (most notably the 5th game). If anything, the game I would argue is closer to Samsho is the old computer game, Barbarian the Ultimate Warrior - a weapon base fighting game released for home computers back in the late 80's in which you play as a Conan the Barbarian wannabe decapitating palate swaps to save a Rock & Roll album cover babe from an evil wizard. Anyhow, I apologize for my mistake.

A couple of corrections: Primal Rage, while encouraged by MK's success, was not inspired by it. The game was a massive gamble and had a costly production. All characters were filmed from wire framed, covered miniatures. The filmed movement was then rendered. It created fluid movement. Weaponlord was Namco trying to create a fighter for home. It didn't land right but they used the attack formula again, for Soul Calibur. Tattoo Assassins was never released. It was advertised heavily but never made it past a few soak test alphas. It was a good example of what happens when a game designer tries to overreach. Major financial loss.

I loved Mace the Dark Age. I only played it in the arcade. Hellknight, Lord Deimos, & Executioner where my go to characters. I got to play Thrill Kill I liked its premise & thought it was fun. A friend of mine hade the disc & mod chip to be able to play it on his ps1. I wish they would remake & release it. So many games these days are far worse than why it got banned.

Blood storm was Timekillers 2, they just didn’t name it that way. Thrill Kill wasn’t even finished before they pulled the plug on it. I’m sure you can find a somewhat playable rom out there but years and years ago, it was difficult to find.

I want to point out that Time Killers was actually a response to the success of Street Fighter, TK came out roughly at the same time as MK. You could say this is like the case of Fatal Fury being a SF clone when they came out at the same time too.

I remember a fighting name in 90s if you can help me find it.. The caracthers were a knight, a goblin, a werewolf, a vampire, an elf and more. The knight had a big sword and his armor was white like a cruzader.. The goblin was green and small. I think the name of game starts with BLOOD. This game was on 3D like tekken or virtua fighter. I played this game on PC. I searched everywhere but i cant find it.

Regarding Tattoo Assassins, this was actually made by Data East. Namely, their pinball division which is now known as Stern Pinball. As for the game's creation, it all began with an idea by Bob Gale (yep, the same guy who wrote the Back to the Future movies) who would give his screenplays to Joe Kaminkow who was friends with him following the creation of the Back to the Future pinball games (which explains one of the fatalities where the opponent is run over by a DeLorean DMC-12), And one of those screenplays involved tattoos coming to life.
