Today I'm taking a look at the new High Definition Action Camera from Five Below. This camera is brought to us under the Digital Essentials brand, and is one of the more expensive items in Five Below at the moment coming in at $20. That being said, this is still a cheap action camera when you take into account all of the additional accessories that are packed into this kit. The real questions is whether or not it's actually worth the asking price.

I'm using this cheap camera as a motion detector security camera for my apartment. If you need home security it works pretty well for this purpose. For anything else, I recommend a much better quality camera. What's funny to me, having the waterproof case and the accessories is a great bargain for $20 just by itself. The camera is just kind of a lame bonus item lol...

I've been trying to get back to uploading even more frequently. I have several more videos recorded and an ever growing pile of things I need to review. I just need to edit down and edit them, and I hate editing. 😅

I was interested in buying this as a water sport camera. Can you test it with the waterproof case under water? Does it say how deep you can take it underwater?

I bought this camera for my son this Christmas, after opening we could not get it to turn on before an after charging it so I assumed it was broke or defective an took it back to five and below to exchange it. Got the 2nd one, turned on after opening and worked until the battery died, plugged it in to charge, after charging it wouldn't turn on. Anybody else have this problem or know how to troubleshoot?

You won't build up a memory on that battery assuming it actually is lithium ion. It's nicad and nimh that have issues with memory while lithium ion batteries aren't known to have a memory effect.

I find it charming some revisions (the one with HDMI and WIFI) of these cameras run das-uboot on startup.

I'm curious: would you be interested in a little experiment? Try an SD card above a 32GB, such as a 64GB or higher, and format it in Windows with GUI Formatter and see if it'll read it. I have a theory that the camera isn't looking for a size, per-se, but rather a format. My theory is it reads only FAT-32 format and if you trick a card into thinking it's FAT-32, you'll trick the CAMERA into thinking it's a FAT-32 card. What do ya think?

The problem with the SD card is anything above 32gb needs to be formatted as exFat. I am guessing the camera has issue with this format. You could always try an external 3rd party format tool like fat32format (preferred) or EASEUS partition manager to format as fat32 and see if the camera recognizes it.

Has anyone found out how to set the date and time on the camera?? I tried the settings and hooking it up to my laptop, and ... nada. TIA

One of the other commentors said that they were able to make the camera save the date properly after giving it a factory reset from the menu (I believe it's in the voice recorder mode). However, the date will reset itself if the camera completely loses power.

Nope. The most athletic thing I do is the occasional 10-20k walk. That was just the most generic outdoor venue nearby. 😅

how do you upload video to you tube from this camera, yes I know thats a dumb question but fo u need a computer to do so? I'm looking g to get a cheap camera for mybson to start with instead if using mybphine for our KZfaq chanel, and im a noob so, do I need a computer if I get this? thanks, and don't hate please im and old guy trying to be a cool dad here. thank u

Yes, you'll need to transfer the recorded video to a computer or another device that can be used to upload to KZfaq (a phone or tablet would work).

Were you able to get it out? Just move the little button at the top and at the same time lift the square thingy around it, but lift the one that looks like it's the back.

i cannot figure out getting this to connect to my computer for the life of me, could you explain how you got it connected?

Are you trying to connect it as a webcam or disk drive? You can swap between modes from the settings menu when you have the camera in audio recording mode (weird, I know). You'll need to scroll past the bottom of the screen to go to the second page of settings, and there you'll find the PC mode (or whatever it's called) setting. Once you've made your selection it should connect to your computer without issue. I at least know that it doesn't need drivers in Windows.

It was definitely annoying to open the first time. I needed to use a flathead screwdriver to press on the tab because I couldn't get enough pressure with my fingernail. After that first time it's been easy to open.

my five below had them rigjt next to this camera kn the shelf, as well as the dash cams he mentions in the beginning that cost 10 dollars. they had all 3 in stock in monaca pa where I live

the only real use i could see from this camera is filming one of those crappy found footage movies where some of the quality of the movie is that its recorded really crappily

the one flat piece it sits on has a peel off base with glue, it is a permanent mount pretty much used like that

I like the grip and lighting gear Five Below sells. Bought this cam today on a lark, it looked like a clone of the Icontechs models I like, which are around 50 bucks and come in 2k and 4k. This one unfortunately is a dog; poor low light performance, the resolution is poor. Audio capture quality super poor. The accessories for it are great especially the skeleton cage, which I use for other action cams and can never find for sale by itself. But $20 is a lot to spend for the accessories If you consider the camera a free extra. You can do much better with other options, including used phone cams from the pawn shop.

We're you ever able to set the date and time on this thing? I picked one up and it will not save the date and time no matter what I do in the menu and it stays set to 1/1/2021.

It sets for me just fine, but if the battery dies completely or is removed the date resets.

How did you do a factory reset? And exactly how does a factory reset fix the date? lol.... How does it know the date if you can't input it or connect to the internet? That doesn't make any sense

I demonstrate how to open the waterproof case around the "accessories" chapter marker at 18:14. That's the only way I know of to open these.

Imo what makes the footage look like ASS is the GARBAGE video compression. 480p can actually look pretty decent (uxwbill anyone?) but whatever compression that camera is doing (Hardware acceleration?) is just BAD.
