Definitely CD's for me! I do pay for the Apple music service for the rest of the family. Streaming is not my preferred way to listen but it does come in handy for sampling something to see if I might want to buy it.

This is a really interesting topic! The CD resurgence is gonna be awesome! Vinyl made a big comeback, and I hope CDs are next in stores. A few years ago, seeing CD selections at stores diminish and vinyl popping up everywhere felt weird at first... like I was stepping some kind of time warp lol

Great vid! This has been going on for awhile, and you’ll continue to see rare, OOP, imports, and lots of them will be SACD or CD/SACD hybrid discs. Among others, I actually have Sabbath’s Paranoid in this same Japan -only SACD series as the original album here on this list. It was like 5,000 Japanese yen when I bought it in Japan over ten years ago new, and I know it’s been valuable for years.

Thanks for the comment, DN, maybe you can educate me a bit. What is it that makes the Japan SACDs so collectible, is it the sound quality, packaging or overall rarity or something else entirely? Thanks
@d.nakamura9579

@@TheGoldenAgeofHardRock it’s a combination of all those factors that make certain SACD pressings really desirable. As a format, SACD is kinda like manual transmissions vs EVs. Still barely hanging on and increasingly rare, as most high definition recordings are being streamed and downloaded in file format instead.

very interesting thanks - it shows that people are going back to good full bodied sound which can be obtained through a CD because they are recorded in WAV files which capture all of the sound. - While MP3 tracks which are most of what people download only capture part of the sound and actually cut off parts of the high end and the low end to make the tracks file footprint smaller.

As a Gen-Xer, I love having my music in the cloud and on my computer and phone, but I still buy used CDs. The kind of music I like is easy to find used, used CDs are generally super cheap, like 1/10th the price of buying the album on ITunes, and I can rip them into my online music collection so I have instant music anywhere AND physical media backups AND I own it 100% legally and no one can take it away. Best of both worlds, but that just describes Gen X right there! :)

Boomer here. I have around a thousand albums, over 100 cassettes, at least 50 HIFI music VHS tapes, 4000 CDs, numerous music DVDs and thousands of .flac and .mp3 downloaded files. Downloads are mostly thousands of live concerts, rare music, demos and unreleased music. I also record music off streaming sites easily with software. We share unreleased shows through blogsites like T.U.B.E. (The Ultimate Bootleg Experience), and file sharing sites like Guitars101. Boomers do it all. 😉

@@robertvance1873 nothing against vinyl but to equal a newer cd player's or older one with a good outboard DAC you need a record cartridge of atleast $100 probably $150 then there's rhe extended playtime and having a remote you can hit pause to get a beverage or customize playing order no snaps and crackles. Cds got a bad wrap because earlier player's didn't have a good DAC and the 1st outboard DACs were really expensive and we didn't know the technology was evolving. The telling fact here is that just about everyone of these are SACDs, limited edition and rare, and/or signed by the artist/band. This doesn’t in anyway indicate that there’s a “CD collecting resurgence” sweeping across the universe. You CD collectors are funny. Are ya’ll feeling left out of the music format wars, or something…??? Funny. Anyway, I like CDs. I like vinyl more, but CDs are fine. I still buy them occasionally. I’m a Gen X’er, and when I was a kid, vinyl was towards the end of its run, but was still the top format. There has never been a time in my life when I didn’t own LPs or prefer the vinyl format. As I got older, and CDs became top dog, I didn’t donate my collection to the local Goodwill, or abandon it next to the neighborhood dumpster (I know several people who did), and then run out and replace with CDs. I never understood why anyone would do that, but that’s just me. At the end of the day I couldn’t care less what someone’s preferred physical format is, be it CD, vinyl, R2R, or cassette, doesn’t matter. What’s important, is that people are still buying, and listening to physical music mediums. I hate digital downloads and streaming, and in my opinion, these virtual formats if you will, have reduced the art of music, the art of creating, and recording to nothing more than a cheap commodity that can be discarded in seconds with the click of a button, or swipe of a finger. It has no intrinsic value or meaning any longer. Without investment, there can be no return. On a lighter note…. There’s no way in hell I would spend $100+ on a little plastic jewel case with a shiny little silver disc inside. 😜 😂

I'm 57 and grew up with vinyl. When CDs came out, it was a few years before I could afford a CD player. Tubular Bells and DSOTM were the first CDs I bought! I started to replace vinyl with CD, but then stopped as I realised it was a stupid thing to do. I wasn't bothered that vinyl was in decline at that time. Sad at the thought it may disappear, but as there has been a resurgence, it's a double edged sword, in that my small collection is worth a damn site more, but the cost of vinyl is ridiculous now! I'm with you on the "who cares what media you listen to music on". Just enjoy it!

That Judas Priest CD was not signed by the original band. The original lineup had KK Downing. I think Ian Hill is the only remay original member. Even Halford wasn't the original singer but would give him a pass since no other singer has been on their albums

why would the original lineup of priest sign a cd that they did not play on? there's not a single current member of that band that was even in the original lineup.

That's one of my pet peeves also, why would anyone want someone's signature on something that they had nothing to do with creating. I don't get it, but then again, a lot of people have no clue and pay big bucks to see bands with one or even none of the original members on the stage, go figure.

@@TheGoldenAgeofHardRock besides the fact that Ernie Chataway, the original guitarist for priest, died before firepower was even released. i don't get it either. i refused to see megadeth after nick n marty. would not see slayer after dave and jeff. no metallica after jason. no aic after layne. i did see priest right after k.k. left but k.k. was getting sloppy anyways and richie shreds every bit as good, maybe better.

@@TheGoldenAgeofHardRock The show I saw was the show that was cut short due to the Thunderstorm and the ensuing Riot in Tampa Stadium. But I did get to see them at least for like 4 songs anyway. My Wife likes to remind me She was at the 1973 show in Tampa to experience the full show. But what really makes me jealous is she also seen Jimi Hendrix T.Rex and Elvis at different shows in the old Curtis Hixon Hall in Downtown Tampa. They don't have to be expensive. I bought my Pro-Ject Debut III second hand for less than a decent CD player. I chose to upgrade my stylus, (when I got a gift card to use), and it's not a bad turntable. Yes, you can pay way more, but that's a choice one can make. Plus, it's a damn site easier to maintain! When a CD player breaks, it's either an expensive repair or it becomes landfill! I have both vinyl and CDs. Some albums have never been released on vinyl, (yet) and I've grown up with the foibles of vinyl, so for me, I switch between the two.

Had no idea they played Jersey. By 1980, you would have had to pay me to go see Rush in concert. I saw them when they were great and the very first tour!! Most of you guys didn’t even here of them until they were done with metal, 2112. Never got to see Guy. You are lucky. Saw them in ‘81 and the Riot Live was 6 songs and Guy was not on that album, sorry. I have the original ep., or did until I sold all My vinyl and bought a brand new Caddy!

I assume it depends on where you live. Where I live many stores and many people (including myself) give away CDs for free. I had a store reject Prince, Eric Clapton, AC/DC and Pink Floyd CDs when I tried to sell them so after I put the songs I like into my iTunes library I either put the CDs into local book boxes on the street or I put them into plastic bags and leave them on top of the recycling bins at the park.

2 out of 5 is pretty good for the autograph factor alone. Did they sign the booklet, the disc or the jewel case, the booklet is better, the jewel case is the least wanted and also is the CD booklet and disc in good shape? If, so, easily it's worth between $400 and $800. Of course, if you had Malcolm also on there it'd go for over $1,000 🤘

I don’t understand why CDs have not done well in sales. I might get it if you are very good about making back ups of all your music. That is in case your devices crash and you can’t retrieve. I don’t trust myself on always backing up my music. If I buy a CD not only I get a original cover but the music which I just upload and put it away. Any problems down the road no problem. I have a basically brand new CD to fix the lose without having to purchase again! If the younger generation can explain why they don’t prefer buying the CD please respond. Not joking I am only wondering because maybe I am missing something you may know. Thanks

I'd be interested in reading any responses to your question also, David. I started out as a vinyl collector in the 70's and built up a huge collection. In '83, I joined the Marine Corps and I couldn't take it with me, so I gave them away to family and friends. I started collecting CDs in the 80's and never looked back. I always enjoyed all of the perks of CDs when it came to portability, durability and smaller storage requirements. Now that I've got well over 6000 CDs, I'm not about to jump back on the vinyl bandwagon for finance sake alone. I also pay for streaming, but it's mainly because that's what my kids like, but I do use it.

It's a bit sad that those expensive NIB discs are almost certainly bought to be collected & will never be opened & played. CDs are still quite popular (well, not on YTube) & I'm sure younger music fans will be building collections inexpensively with them while older fans like me look forward to all the special features in anniversary reissues of favorites (on CD, BluRay & DVD).
