That Art Pepper album is a real joy. Same with Way Out West. Same engineer, I recall...the name just came to me, Roy DuNann. Oh, Waltz for Debbie...what an album.

Thanks for your comments Jose! Looking forward to Way Out West when it comes out later this year in the Contemporary series. Roy DuNann is great. I've covered several of the albums he engineered for Contemporary. To think a young Bernie Grundman had his first job mastering those DuNann records. And today he gets to do them again in the Acoustic Sounds Contemporary Series. Please check out my video on Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section and some of the other titles released so far. Great to have you here, your comments are very welcome!

Yes, I recall when I decided to get my first Tone Poets, I was a little late by a year perhaps. I streamed everything that was available, but could only afford one. Right from the start I knew that was the right choice. There's been so many great ones, Katanga right up there for me too. Wish I could get them all but I'm adding one a month.

@@ThePressingMatters Scott, Since you don’t have all the Tone Poets and I don’t either, I wanted to give you my favorites in case you needed some help deciding. My Divinity Albums are: Katanga, Introducing KB, Now He Sings Now He Sobs, One Flight Up and Dance With Death. Albums I classified as great are: Picture Of Heath, Kenny Burrell, Byrd In Flight, Chant, Stick-Up, It’s Time, Bring It Home To Me and Contours. Now, there are lot of really nice albums but these are the standouts for me. I’m happy you are back and I pray that you have recovered from your surgery.

You have some great titles there, Scott. 😍 Of the ones you showed and I have, I love the Bill Evans Trio records, just fabulous! 😻My favorite jazz album is Coltrane's A Love Supreme. I acquired the 45 rpm AP UHQR of that album in 2023, and it's simply outstanding. It is the very best sounding copy of that recording that I own, and the extras are great too. 😻😻😻
@ThePressingMatters

That's one I must get before it disappears. I will get to hear the UHQR at a friends soon. I have the Acoustic Sounds release but haven't delved deeply into it yet.
@audiophileman7047
@audiophileman7047 7 ай бұрын
I also have the 45 AP A Love Supreme mastered from the original master tapes some years ago. It sounds really good too, but the UHQR sounds better to me. I love the celebration of a UHQR and how UHQR releases receive the royal treatment with extras and packaging. I found some really nice bargain classical albums on the RCA, London, Capitol, Mercury, and Deutsche Gramophon labels on my recent LP Safari. I also found the Reader's Digest Beethoven Symphonies Box Set you mentioned in a previous video. Unfortunately the box had water damage. What I've noticed in for profit second hand venues is that they're now checking the value of these records. They're pricing them up. They wanted $20 for the Beethoven Box Set. It's still a relative bargain, but with the surge of interest in vinyl records in recent years, the true bargains are harder to come by now. Everybody seems to know that vinyl records are worth something now. @@ThePressingMatters

Yeah, I haven't been out there thrifting in years but I know the landscape has changed. I might have paid $10 for my copy as. When I was buying these, none were over $10. Still Classical often falls through the cracks as "undesirable" and can be had for cheap. I need to get back out there and see how my area is for bargain hunting.
@audiophileman7047
@audiophileman7047 7 ай бұрын
You'll find good stuff, but in some cases you may pay more than you did in the past. Part of these increased costs are due to inflation. I did find a number of cool records for $1.00 to 25 cents, but that was only at two non-profit second hand stores out of the many I checked out. Talked to a guy who evaluates and prices records at one non-profit store, he said that classical is a slow seller, and I could get terrific deals if I came back to the store. Good luck with your second hand store safari; it's a fun thing to do. 👍👍👍@@ThePressingMatters

Even though I have the Japanese copy, I jumped at the AS Holiday, wow. I have the Hawkins/Webster on Classic Records. The Coltrane/Hartman is heavenly. As I had the Chet Baker Sings as part of a Mosaic box, I did not pick up the Tone Poet first time around, but did this year, not only does it blow away the Mosaic it is the one I play for friends, their mouths drop. The Craft is easily Evans’ Sunday at the Vanguard. The two 45rpm albums are Shirley Horn’s Softly, Impex’s Famous Blue Raincoat. The non-2023 release I played the most was Nina Simone’s Little Girl Blue from 2021 mastered by Kevin Gray, the AS 45 long out of print, but this one for $27 is a steal. The most played regardless were the Holiday and Baker, flawless performances that takes you to another place and sound that among the best I have ever heard.

I really had to make a hard decision on whether the Chet Baker would make it for Tone Poet. Obviously a great record and one of my favorites from that series. As inclusion was not scientific, Chet was initially my first choice. Hard to say which got more play!

Is that Eastern Sounds really coming out from OJC? I see that the digital copy is a pre-order, but the vinyl has gone missing from Craft's site. I am also eagerly awaiting that and super excited about their next 3 announcements, especially Cannonball's title.

I haven't heard otherwise. But I just checked on the Craft website and it's missing. That's odd because everyone else is still listing it, with Amazon stating February 2nd. That would be a shame, such an interesting album and that One Step was so limited and difficult to get. I'll see if I can call and get an answer. Cannonball is an automatic for me. It's on my list of titles I have wanted to add to my collection.

What are your feelings on Mofi one step releases at this point? I don't have any Mofi but I kind of get the sense it's an untrustworthy company. Using digital masters with a smiley face EQ then charging over $100 seems shady, and I can already adjust EQ with my Puffin. I love Van Halen's debut and they're offering it as a one step for $125. Feeling very torn since reviews on it have been very positive. Thanks!

Andrew I've been burned too many times with MOFI One Steps. Even with the digital issue out of the way, the mastering is often not to my taste. I won't buy any unless I hear at least some file or hear it at a friends, or borrow it from a friend.

@@ThePressingMatters That would be so helpful, thanks Scott. I'm sure the V-shaped EQ sounds ridiculous on a revealing system. Also, the 2015 Van Halen reissues are AAA Bellman cuts for under $30 that already sound great. I only ask because you seemed to like The Nightfly Mofi. enjoyable and informative video. Strange how our U.S cousins seem to promote only small jazz groups as opposed to the likes of Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson etc that populate the world of big bands. I have seen the odd Duke Ellington and Count Basie albums showcased but that is all. Shame.

Good point, but just consider I'm going on this jazz journey through the reissue series. The list was specific to the titles released in these series and not a list of the greatest or favorite jazz recordings of all time. The earlier big band type stuff is great but not well represented as of yet by the reissue companies. An interesting observation for sure though. Thanks so much for watching and your perspective is much appreciated!

You're right and I have acquired some of the big band reissues from the artists you mentioned. Thankfully, you can find a lot big band originals in the aftermarket, and they're often nicely priced. Demand is always the key to whether or not a record will be reissued. If they can't make money, then it's not going to happen. I'd like to see more blues reissues, especially some of the earlier stuff from long forgotten pioneers of the blues. Don't know if it will ever happen.
