I chose to live on my property for 9 years after my house burned down, not having formal electricity. Slept in my car for 2.5 years and still showed up for work. I learned that 20 feet of black hose in the sun could give me enough water for a shower standing on a pallet among my trees and old buildings. I also learned that those 8-10 hour hand warmers will keep me warm all night with sweats and a sleeping bag on top of a king-size 3" foam mattress topper folded in half. Would buy blocks of ice for my ice chest sitting on blocks. Opened the drain plug to give cats cool water as ice melted. Battery operated 10" fan and a wet rag at night in the summer (80-110 degrees). After 7 years, discovered my small town had a cooling center. So I started to hang out there. Finally sold and moved into a house at 71 years old.

My late husband kept containers of zip tie, nuts, bolts and I thought useless stuff but he always found something in the garage that he could use. He always said u never know when you might need it and he was right. The neighbors would come here to ask if he had this or that and he always did. God rest his soul. I miss him 🙏🙏

I learned the last two years how to garden and about medicinal herbs and their usages from researching the internet with questions and watching videos on KZfaq. I wrote down everything I learned as I learned it into journals so I would have a hard copy. Bought a couple books too for reference. Had my first garden last year, most was successful and now I have my medicinal seeds planted in my yard. I also just learned how to make soap, shampoo etc. Next will be searching videos on how to sew! Turn off those tv’s and get to learning new skills!

I save my tissue boxes and use them to store my clean and folded plastic bags. They store nice and neat. Blessings to all of you!

👍 Great video. I must just disagree on one point. In Europe many of us live in very small apartments and when the temperatures went down to minus 16, the building heater was not strong enough. I can tell you that you can indeed heat a 20qm room with 6 to 8 tea light candles and you'll get 22 to 25 degree Celsius despite having minus 16 outside. So it depends on where and how you live... My father built our family home in the mid 50’s. I think he had every size of nail, screw, bolt, nut and whatever else imaginable in a multitude of glass jars. When he passed, I inherited those jars. So glad I did, as I’ve been using the contents for years. As the eldest and his daughter btw, I put a couple of nails, with dad’s help, in the roof of our house. Every nail, screw and bolt mean so much to me knowing he touched each and every one of them. When we moved 450 miles away from Southern New York in 2003, nothing would stop me from bringing all of those memories along for the ride.

When I married my husband his late wife had collected a huge amount of taper candles and jar candles. I gave some of the jar candles to his children. Last winter I chopped up all those taper candles, melted them down and refilled empty candle jars with some scent and coloring added. Candles?? We got CANDLES!! LOL!!

I am so glad that my mom and dad lived the prepping and survival lifestyle. I always prepped my entire life. My family has often said that if you need something, go ask me first and most time I would have what they’re looking for. My motto was always “be prepared!!” “you never know what can happen”. The only thing that would make you "toast" is not knowing the Word of God. Prepping resources is a good thing, but the main prep is of our hearts and trusting the blood of Jesus that saves.

The one thing that I think people tend to forget is feminine products. Buy ahead with coupons and sales. Remember the possibility of first timers they use beginner stuff. I had 3 girls at home and I stock piled with coupons and never ran out. Always got great deals and was able to donate to schools for girls that didn't have much.

My grandmother canned, my mom never did. Last year, at the age of 71, I learned to water bath can. I bought a Ball Jam & Jelly Maker and made my first strawberry jam and canned it myself, learning it from You Tube videos. This year, I made raspberry jam and planted a raspberry bush in the backyard so I can grow my own. I also bought a pressure canner to learn how to do that, too.

Tarps can also be used to catch rainwater. You can hang them so they funnel into barrels and catch more water for you.

During a 5 day ice storm in 2013, we lit my wife's scented candles for light and to keep my coffee warm in my mug. They were scented and quite disturbing. In the future I would get unscented candles for emergency use.

My father had a potty chair which my sister kept after he passed away. She and her family live in the middle of tornado alley and they had a safe room built in their garage. Will one day when I was visiting I looked in the safe room and there was the potty chair so I complimented my sister on being prepared in case they were stuck in the safe room for awhile. A few days after that I read an article about what people needed to have on hand during a severe weather event and one of those things was a bucket or something similar with plastic bags inside to use as a potty chair. I called my sister and told her she needed to keep some plastic bags in the safe room to make clean up after using the potty chair easier. The other thing I learned from my father was to always keep a sturdy pair of shoes in the car (he preferred them to be on my feet). But in case of car trouble and having the possibility of walking it is much more comfortable to walk in good shoes than it is to walk in flip flops. The other thing he liked is no matter what season it is to always have a good winter coat in the car which I learned later in a survival exercise can be handy in the desert to protect yourself from the sun. I live in a fairly small place without a garage or yard so I actually don’t have room for a lot but I do have something’s.

I am 72 and when I was a child I learned massive things from my grandmother about the depression and I am passing the info to my kids. It’s amazing what I learned from her that I can use now and for what is coming.

You can make bleach out of pool shock, the calcium hypochlorite kind. It’s much more shelf stable. Mixing 5 teaspoons with 2 cups of water will give you a pint of bleach. Great video and I hope this helped!

Gardening asumes that one has the garden and that one can defend it from intruders if things get bad.. Because people will come steal if they do not have anything.. And they will not have anything because they hate preppers. I, being a Mediterranean man, has learn to cook traditional Andalusian recipes for sweets which do not need refrigerator and last for more than one year.. Like the kind if honey cakes you find in Arabic countries. You can literally survive by eating a tiny one of those cakes per day.. They contain dates, postaccio, etc.. Very nutritious and easy to make.. It just takes a long time to make but it is a great thing to prepare before the inflation let's all if us without food.

The eggs we buy are in foam cartons. I take those when empty, to church, and the people with chickens use them for when they sell eggs. Free saves them some money. With feed prices through the roof, it's my way of supporting them. We don't buy enough eggs to set up a schedule to buy from them direct, but it does help a tiny bit.

Our power went out last summer from a thunderstorm. I had purchased a few dollar tree battery fans. Course I got laughed at a little by my grown kids because the fans are small and made of plastic. What a difference when use 2 or 3 of the fans together. Works nicely.

I would love to see a video on creativeways to store preps in small areas where it still looks tidy. I have a small home, and usually don't like to keep a lot of "things" (knick knacks, sentimental items, etc) because of the space. I would like to add to my preps but under the beds are now full. No basement. I would just love to see cute, smart ways to keep items without feeling like my home is being taken over by stuff.

So many people don't know how to cook anymore. I learned a lot from your cookbooks and other sources. It prepares me for an uncertain future. I also learned how to make sourdough bread, sprout mung beans, bake desserts, and make yogurt and cheeses. It is a fun hobby that actually saves me money.

Learn to crochet, knit, sew, mend clothes, cook from scratch, and process food for the future. Just a few from the top of my head.

We moved from an inner city house to a house in a small village surrounded by farmland last year. We planted a garden, although we were complete amateurs and to our delight, it was very successful. I filled my freezer with green beans, zucchini, tomatoes, etc, that grew in our garden. I canned relish, made with the last of the garden cucumbers for the first time in my 50+ years. It is a whole new learning experience and we're loving it! I've saved seeds from various foods we've eaten and they are starting to sprout. We do a lot of the things on your list already, even when we were living in the city, just not the gardening so much. Thank you for all your wonderful videos!!

One thing I noticed missing was water. Ways to store and filter it. With gardening, I would add ways to preserve your food. Canners, jars, vacuum sealers, dehydrators etc. Foraging would be good to learn as well which goes along with medicinal plants. Lots of 'weeds' in our lawns make medicines or could be used for food. Dandelions are great for many things. Learning how to cook is an underated skill, even better if you can cook over a fire. Tin foil could be added to your list as well. You can wrap most foods in it, set it in some hot coals and have a meal. My kids and I go camping quite a bit so we do some of these things. Bushcrafting/survival books are handy. First aid supplies. Anything manual...can openers, I used to have an electric one but switched to manual because I could use it when the power was out. There are so many handy things, thank you for making this video.

Great video! I think it is important for people to become familiar now with ways to preserve food besides refrigeration or even canning. We built a smoke house from rough hewn lumber so that meat, fish, etc. could be cured and smoked if necessary (we smoke bacon about once per year now, among other things). Having some sea salt (pickling salt, etc.) on hand to cure meat and fish, along with some sugar draws moisture out/helps to preserve it, and then the meat/fish can be smoked so that it can be stored without refrigeration. Dehydrating is another form of preservation that can be done without electricity (we can use those cars that won't run with little to no access to gas, for dehydrating purposes....food placed on pans in a hot car with the window cracked....people can google for info about doing this). I make laundry detergent in 5 gallon buckets (powder) because in a pinch it could be used for washing dishes, clothing, house, and hands~~so I keep lots ahead. (could even be helpful for barter) Medical supplies like a BP cuff, old fashioned thermometer (and magnifying glasses to read it if you're like me and can't see the tiny marks...), suture supplies, etc. You can learn how to close a wound using some duct tape, fishing line or strong thread, and a couple of sticks (you basically place tape on either side of a gaping wound (punch a few holes along the length of tape first for "sewing"), then sew the tape together and draw it together to close the wound without piercing the skin of the person as in true sutures. The small sticks or popsicle sticks are placed underneath the tape near the wound to provide strength for when you pull the strings/line together so it doesn't break through the tape. There are videos online to show how to do this.) I am an herbalist and I know some things about using herbs for various illness and injury, but keeping basic meds on hand like ibuprofen and tylenol, etc. are also a good idea. I think keeping a few family/friend pictures nearby (in a go-bag or purse, etc. if traveling during an emergency) might help bolster spirits when people feel like giving up. I always have a couple of rolls of duct tape on hand . I saw a video recently where someone placed a torchlight behind a clear plastic bottle filled with water and it magnified the light enough to partially light a room.

My husband is a trucker and we flat bedded for years so we have lumber tarps which is so heavy duty. We had a leak last winter in our roof we dragged out those tarps and it worked until spring when we replaced the roof

Just a little thing about having emergency cash (obviously would probably be used in an immediate term emergency as cash will be useless in a long term survival situation). Make sure to have SMALL notes. I have the recommended 6mths cash for food aside, but only in $5/ $10 notes. If you send up in a situation with a power/ EFTPOS outage you may find that if you only have a $20 or $50 note- that 'loaf of bread' that you really need to feed your family will cost $20 or $50. You ain't getting any change! We had this situation during the bushfires in Australia in 2019 (ahhh the good ol' days!). Small town shops were friendly enough to accept an IOU for when the power came back, this won't happen in a widespread situation.

When I was a girl we made logs out of newspapers. Mom hated it because it made a mess of the tub. But they worked. Use your veggie and egg containers to start seeds. Seeds are 4 for a $1 at the dollar store. Regrow your onion roots and celery. Its easy to do.

Our youngest son will be 43 this year. He was allergic to milk and was on isomil. I bought the dry version in metal cans. My husband still has his bolts and nails and little metal parts in those Isomil cans.

I keep my rubber bands on a carabiner. It’s easy to push the band you want near the opening and not disturb the rest. I also buy large packages of covered hair bands for multiple uses. I slip one over the top of a hanger on clothes I’ve worn and can be worn again before washing.

I love your point about learning new thing online.This last year I used KZfaq to learn loom beading, sewn beading, watercolor painting, Square Foot Gardening, companion gardening, Winter Sowing, No Transfer Winter Sowing (Sheryl Mann), how to grow and propagate African Violets, how to grow orchids, and how to grow a plethora of houseplants. The Clay Pot Heaters do Work, but not for the Whole House, I put one in the Bathroom and it keeps it nice n warm. You can just put a few candles in a pan or a Candle Jar , they will help take the chill off. I keep my heat 58-63° in the winter, I can't afford the Electric Bill. Just remember small areas or Rooms. Be Safe using them.

We started learning first aid and after the basic class, they are offering an extended type of class that is kind of like a first responders course. As far as stock piling things, I am saving dryer lint as a fire starter, too. It's amazing how much you can compact into a gallon ziplock bag.

I make egg carton firestarters by stuffing each "egg" with dryer lint or shavings- i melt my scrap candle stubs in a double boiler and then pour it into the egg carton- when it cools, i just close the lid and store it on a shelf over my woodbin- if i am out of paper- i just tear one or two "eggs" off with a very small amt of kindling and a fire gets started every single time ☺

You about had me in a panic when you said newspapers. My husband, truly, used to hoard old newspapers. He had subscriptions to 2, thick newspapers and never threw any away. He would have a fit if I dared touch his stacks of newspapers.

Along with various kinds of tarps or plastic to use, dollar stores have cheap plastic shower curtains. So, in a pinch those can be used. I've used old shower curtains for art/paint projects for years.

People often balk at the idea of storing candy in their food storage but sugar has some mild analgesic properties especially in children not to mention the psychological benefits of having that little bit of pleasure when in high stress situations. Kudos ladies!

I'm not a drinker, but I store vodka. I've used it to get pee smell out of bathroom floors and wood floors (boys and an old cat). I've also used it to make hot toddies when I get bronchitis, so I can sleep at night, and it's good for sterilizing items. Also, I bought an emt bag, a suture kit, and a dental tool kit from Amazon just in case we can't get to a doctorin an emergency. Hopefully, we will never need it.

I try to save as many of the items you mentioned but I live with my parents and my dad finds them and throws them away. I have found a number of things at yard/garage sales and he says I’m dragging in useless things but then when the power was out this winter and I had those things they were great. I just keep doing what I can and remind him that we will probably use all of them.

Thank you!Great idea to use the egg cartons for fire starter. A coworker told me to use the lint from your dryer, put it in toilet paper rolls for a fire starter. Don't forget lighters. I think puzzles are great for children and adults. Coloring items. Crossword puzzles. I love to crochet. Knitting not so much. So whoever knows how to do this, teach your children/grandchildren. A scarf is so simple to do. Old buttons, teach them how to sow on a button, mend a sock. Multi vitamins. They are long good after the 'best buy' or expiration date. So are most dry goods. Get a good pair of shoes, sandals and winter boots. You can make clothes ... but shoes? My grandma said to always have eggs, flour sugar and, if available, milk in the house. You can always bake something, make a rue and gravy (over noodles, rice, potatoes) and have a warm meal to fill your belly. Also, make your own bread, pasta or dumplings.

Free plastic tarps... you can go to billboard company and get used billboard wraps. They can't legally resell them after they've been used and they give them away. If you have a post office nearby, I get lots of newspaper from the recycle bin they have inside for when people sort their mail and toss them out.

I am going to build a solar oven and learn how to use it. Also, making a "washer" out of buckets and toilet plunger😉

great list and ideas, the only thing I would say is to try everything you are saving/prepping for at least once. Grab that hand reel and fishing line and go fish. You may not catch anything, but maybe you'll see some foraging opportunity instead. Cook a meal on that wood fire you build, it can be a frustrating experience when you are so used to having instant and constant heat at the flick of a switch. Do it now and work out the frustrations while you are not stressed about an off grid situation or the like. You'll then be able to streamline or change little things that will make the whole process much easier. Turn off the power/water to you house for a whole day and see how you go without it. You'll learn far better and quicker what you need that way. Try to approach it with a positive attitude and work out what you are prepared to do and what you need to change/learn. Have fun with it while you can. If you can, get friends and family involved too, make a weekend of it, set a challenge with a reward for children. Educate yourselves and others at the same time. It's a great way to connect with like minded people and groups tend to learn/adapt quicker because there are many different ideas and approaches to each situation.

Candy also helps with low blood sugars. Ranger bands and bicycle tubing is great as well as rubber bands. Books are great, but don't forget to have notebooks for tips, hints, drawings, or whatever to help remember certain things about what you learn. You retain more info by writing things down.

When the power goes out and looks like it will be out for more than a couple hours, put a stack of blankets or old towels on top of the freezer and DO NOT OPEN the lid. We kept things frozen during a 4 day long power outage caused by an early September snowstorm. House temp got down to about 12C (54F).

During a freeze without power i used tea light candles in a pot and stayed warm for 4 days

Those flat cotton pads to use for makeup removal are also great for fire starters. Dip them.in the wax, lay them out to "dry" then stack them. To use them you can cut them in half and tent it to light for a firestarter. You can store them in a large RX medication bottle, just stack them and fill up the bottle.

Great video! A suggestion on salt, go to your local farmer's co-op, ours has a product called Mix N Fine. It is granulated salt for adding to your animal feed, about $8 for 50 pounds. Salt is salt from the salt mines and how it is sold is dtermined by how much it is processed. This is a little courser than table salt but tastes great and is sealed in a heavy duty plastic bag. Some uses, weed control, food prservative, tanning, anti septic, etc. I keep 100 to 200 pounds on hand. At one time the Roman sldiers were paid in salt, thus the old saying worth your salt, it was more valuable than gold. A good skill is to learn to can food. If the grid goes down you will not be able to cook and eat all the food in your freezer. You can save a lot by canning it. Sugar is another great item to have, no only baking, making candy but you can make jelly and jam out of the fruits in the freezer. A quick suggestion on fire starters, save dried wood shavings, saw dust will work but the shavings are much better. Place them in a bucket and add some of your old used grease from deep frying or cooking bacon. A little helps even damp wood get going. Butter wrappers also work very good. Fishing line is great to use to patch a screen also! I always keep a little extra screen & fishing line on hand for this! Also I keep our lint for fire starters also. I also use wax, pinecones and lint for fire starters.

I used 16 candles to heat my house when power went out for 4 hours. it was 20 degrees outside and my room temp was kept at 60 degrees. It pushed me to get a wood stove, so when it is 20 below, the stove will make it 85 degrees inside and i am opening windows!

When we started prepping 15 years ago we stocked up on cases of bleach not realizing the quick expiration. We do use it a little but not much. When we realized that we had very old outdated bleach we just started pouring a couple of "Klug Klugs" of it in the toilet every other day to dispose of it. Toilet bowls are sparkly clean.

Great tips! However, when living in the south, kindling in a cardboard box would be a little risky. We have copperheads that love wood so you are offering a double shelter for them to nest in as well as brown recluse and other spiders. A well sealed plastic or metal container would be better. Keep up the good job you are doing.

I have a stockpile of non-perishable food, thanks to the videos. I also have many of the things you mentioned above. We lose power very often, especially in the summer Sometimes we are out for several days. In the winter you can put food outside, but in the summer you can’t. I make sure I do not have a lot of food in my refrigerator and freezer during the warm months for just that reason.
