20 tricks to finally master the Matrix visualization in Power BI!!

The matrix visualization has over 100 configuration options, and some of the most basic functionality, like hiding subtotals is not so easy to discover.
In today's video, I will show you 20 things you can do on the matrix that will take that visualization to the next level.

Hey Ruth , love this. Just this week I developed a report using a Matrix and some clever tooltips to display covid patients /wards they are on and then on tooltip display all patients who shared a space with them on each date as they go from positive/negative etc. It looks amazing and really shocked me how much you can squeeze out of BI and matrixs in particular.

6:51 Show in columns has been save my life several times. On my experience, Excel Finance user and some Sales People love to have table in that way. It works / looks fine if you have few categories-few rows, so if give you a quick overview about how the month is going on and adding a KPI/conditional formatting provides a quick look of it's red or green. It is more like a manual table created on a spreadsheet where each value is in cell (C2) and below the other one (C3) and so on. Sometimes I used to save space on the canvas. Having columns "unpivoted" give more space to the right save of the visualization

I had the same experience working for a customer. Measures on rows, and actual, goal, prior year, changes,... values on columns. To finally have like a KPI matrix and being able to have an overview.

Hello Ruth, thank you for providing hi quality content, first of all! Really appreciate it and saved me several times. Regarding the matrix visual I have a question. If my columns are different months, for like a forecast over time or similar. Is it possible to make a setting as rotating colours. Meaning January white, February Black, March white, April black for easier readability? Searched quite a bit , couldn't find it. If you can make a video about this, greatly appreciated!

Dear Ruth, there are two things that are still bothering me in a matrix, maybe you have a solution for it as well: 1. is there a way to sort the columns headers (e.g. from left to right) based on the column totals (not column names)? 2. if in a martix in the column area you have e.g. years (2017, 2018, 2019) and value sales and unit sales, the first layer of the column headers is a year and then all values below. Is it possible to reverse it (like in pivot tables in Excel) that first you have e.g. value sales (and years below) and unit sales (and years below)? I can't seem to find that option. I would really appreciate some tips on it. Many thanks in advance! :-)

Thanks Ruth! A very informative video. One issue I am grappling with is that the grand totals are not always the sum of the measures displayed in the columns. Like for instance we have a matrix for surveys. We should the participant count against the category (Say location wise) as count distinct of employee no. When the measure value is count distinct the grand total is not displayed correct. Is there any way to fix this?

I have to cross a scenario like we have -/+ icon enable for row wise right, is there a way to have in column like you shown three columns right in that we will show only percentage by expanding we need to see the sales and one more column value you shown in video?

Is there a way to torn off the sorting option on the column? i have tried this but it just wont go away. i need to load my row values in a certain order but it keeps sorting it. is there any way around this? i m missing ssrs so much after this problem. 😊

Is there an option where the new column with values can be moved before the category name position?, I am looking for his option to show specific comparisons. Thank you for the tips! Is there a way to set up standard default settings in Power BI? If there aren't, there should be. It would save a lot of time to select a carryforward default and not have to change settings every time.

Thanks Ruth. Do you know if there is a way of conditionally formatting row headers in a Matrix? I have a matrix with sales per employee and need to conditionally highlight (change background color ) for an entire row (row header and values) for new employees. I can do that in the values but I don't know how to do it in the row headers so that the entire line has the same background color
