I live in East Texas...Fire Ants are EVERYWHERE!!! Literally. They infest your potted plants, raised beds, etc. Thank you for this analysis! It is very thorough and helpful! I'm going to share this with my garden group! 🤩

We don't need to get rid of ants. We simply need to, in the case of the kitchen, pick up the food source. In gardens, they air the soil, carry off some bad stuff, and actually, they help in cultivation.

I mix equal parts baking soda and powdered sugar. It works! It’s the only thing I’ve found that actually works.

I have used a foaming insecticide - Raid Ant Nest Destroyer 2. It works shockingly well (at worst I occasionally need a second application) and after ten small ant nests I still haven't used up the first can.

We have billions of ants constantly over our citrus trees. There’s often nests built under our trees and they kill some of our trees. They are flippen pests.

I have Allegheny Mound ants, I think Diatomaceous Earth can work, If you find the nest and place lots all around it, and replentish often... Then hopefuly they will just move their nest.. In the end I 100% agree with you.

Any info or opinion on spinosad? I discovered studies that suggested moderate to good efficacy on fire ants and other species.

ages ago i had ants invading the flat i was renting. i tried borax with sugar and borax with honey. initially the ants liked it and it seemed to knock back their numbers. after a few days they were back and now they ignored any formulation of borax. nowadays i just use a can of surface soray, and it deters them for a long time. properly seal gaps that you can, so there's no physical access to pantry. seal around window frames etc. ants sometimes set up nests in pots where you have plants in organic matter potting mix that's gone hydrophobic. either work hard to re-wet mix, or even better, change to a potting mixture that contains much less organic matter, using pumice and appropriate sand for bulk of the mix.

Northern flickers will eat them up but your going to have too leave some dead trees so they have nesting habitat. They like stumps and carpenter ants mostly.

I have an ant nest right at the edge of my garden. They don't even shepard the aphids, so I leave em be. There are other methods for that anyway. I only see them when I mow over the nest. They don't like that too much xD

From my experience baking soda worked very well in my home. Just a bit on their "working paths" and they were gone. I do not care about ants in the garden.

The key information is to leave regular ants alone in your garden. They're not doing any harm, and it's a waste of time to try to eradicate them since it's like trying to bail out the ocean--more ants will come.
