I've been trying to chase down the cause of the rich running condition of the KDX200 without any positive improvement. Until this.

This is honestly one of the best channels I have come across recently. Down to earth, honest bike enthusiasts! I am busy rebuilding a bike at the moment (1989 TDR180 in MX Trim), and have learnt A LOT about non-starters and where to start, what to look for, as well as how to do basic diagnostics for common issues. Things you'd never think of checking! Thanks guys!

I'm guessing the packing in the exhaust is saturated in the old oil, id suggest repacking the exhaust.

@Meekerextreme6 жыл бұрын
yeah, with how many times he has taken it out by this point why not, and makes for a great video.
@SilverCanary16 жыл бұрын
To do all that and still have it run like an asthmatic 50 would be a waste of time imo especially as they want to use it now; the bearings in that engine were better anyway. We also couldn't feel quite how cold it was lol...
@redneckgearheadgarage4956 жыл бұрын
No need really

I guess it depends on what the goal is. To use or resale. If to use then yeah I would have replaced. Now that he knows what the real issue was go ahead and replace the seals and bearings to freshen up the motor and make it more reliable.
@zx8401ztv6 жыл бұрын
John Chafin, yep that's the way i think, but if it was my bike and there is a chance to replace the basic stuff while the engine is bare, i would do it. Because later on it will cause problems just when you need the machine the most. That's sods law lol.

Love your vids, smoke issue is probably that there is hella oil in the pipe built up, so take the pipe off and empty out the oil!
@Dronston6 жыл бұрын
When I rode 2 stroke mopeds back in the day we would take the exhaust off, go to a sandpit or similar, poor gasoline in the exhaust and ignited it. It would usually burn the exhaust clean of oil residue. Another method was putting an old clutch cable in a drill and rotate that cable like a mad man inside the exhaust to get rid off some of the coal cake on the inside.

Love your videos and especially your mistakes. They helped tremendously when my father and I spent a dozen hours fixing my furnace yesterday and today. I don't know if it was the mistakes or the sense of humor that kept the project going and got us to finish fixing the furnace and so I have heat when my new born daughter comes home from the hospital tomorrow(Christmas). Thanks!!!!

I had a 1987 KX-125. I was in the same boat. It was running like crap. As soon as I changed the plug wire, BAM, 1 kick start and it never ran so good. Go to auto zone get a uni-plug wire, you just need one end with the boot, and on the ignition box there is a wood screw the wire screws into LOL. Put some RTV around the wire hole are on the box. It's a simple 3 buck fix to try.

One problem with old carbs is the float eventually absorbs gas and doesn't float as good (they get heavy) that causes the fuel level in the bowl to stay too high causing the engine to run rich. Just something to look for.

I've never heard of a carb wearing out aside from scoring from dirt and things like that, but I guess with enough hours anything is possible. I bet new jets, float needle, and maybe float (if you think it's bad) would freshen it up though. And with how little that main seal was leaking, once everything is up to temp and expanded/softened it probably seals just fine. Been loving this series!

Jake, I have an idea what caused the problem. Check the tube inside of which the main metering needle slides in. I don't know the correct name for that tube, but I think I said it reasonably clear. On the other side of that tube the main fuel jet is located. When that tube wears out, it becomes ellipse-shaped, just like the cylinder. The worn tube allows fuel to get in past the needle, thus defeating its purpose.
@somerandomguy38686 жыл бұрын
Certainly got some snap back, I've never heard of a carburetor wearing out but hey ya can't argue with results
