Aus vs SA games were so delightful back then in 90s and early 00s.. high quality contest between bat and ball. Most of the games used to well fought with scores typically between 200 to 240 per innings. I always felt SA of late 90s was notch better than Aus but would invariably lose the games that mattered most. It was there to see in these twin bilateral 3-match series played in 2000 of which SA won 2-1 and second series was 1-1, in spite of vicious turmoil of Cronje fixing issue that happened just before these two series

South Africa should have won the series 2-1

SA was the only team those days capable of not only taking the Aussies on but beating them in their own backyard as well. SA became the first team in 2008 to win a test series in Australia after n years. It was the only team standing up to the Aussies who were playing a different brand of cricket in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Best ODI series I ever witnessed. Aus won the first game. The second was a tie, and South Africa won the third one. At this moment both these teams were equal and shared the #1 position in the ODI cricket.

I remember this series like it was yesterday. As an 8 year old my dad and I went to game 3, the first match I ever went to, and I'll never forget the deafening noise of the crowd (including more than a few South African fans) and the almost constant momentum swings. I always found it odd that they played in August, in winter, and if memory serves me right the match I went to took place on a weeknight so as not to clash too much with the AFL season that was happening at the same time. No wonder they abandoned that idea afterwards. Still, that was my first taste of live cricket and I was hooked from then onwards.

What made south africa and Australia matches very competitive during 90's and 2000's was not only the batting and bowling but the fielding , South africa was better fielding side than Australia , New Zealand and Zimbabwe!

Australia vs South Africa in the year 2000 ( six ODIs evenly spread across the two nations) is probably the highest standard of white ball / limited overs cricket ever. Edit: imma change that to undoubtedly.

Whenever Australia played, Brett Lee, glespy and McGrath , other team very difficult to reach even 200 score.
@abdulwahabkhankhail85434 жыл бұрын
It's your poor thinking bro.... It was only happened when teams were playing in Australia.... But when Australia was playing away these bowlers were smashed to their worst figures.... I had seen McGrath getting 70+ runs in his spells... I had seen Brett Lee went for 90+ runs in a single match... I had seen gilespie conceded a single spell of 86 runs... I had seen warne giving 67 runs spell without any wicket ... So this was not everytime that opposition to Australia was bowled out up to 200 runs.... I had seen teams smashing 300+ runs against Australia (having McGrath, Bret, gilespie,warne, symonds etc)....
