It was at this point sponsors held team owners at gunpoint, especially Marlboro at Penske since ad regulations ruled cigarette only to be shown in one sport series. Not to mention ESPN wanted only a single coherent series to be broadcasted, and the disastrous 2001 season didn't help the matter either.

i think it was also the start of the demise of IRL too though....kinda proved how amateur most of the teams/drivers were and from 2002 on it started to morph into CART lite as the talent from CART started displacing the IRL drivers and teams.

CART had bad business model in general. Very expensive overpowered 1100 HP cars, lack of oval racing, and poor racing product even on ovals. It was just a matter of time before it would be collapsed. CART lived more than one year over split just because it was a team-run organization, like all major sports leagues in English-speaking North America. It was the only reason why major teams stayed there until the year 2003.

the people that run the indycar stuff are pretty technologically inept and out of touch with how modern web works... thats why they put these races on youtube BUT hide them for most of the year when they could literally rack up millions of views instead of just 15k... so it's not a shock they didn't care about the audio. indycar- you wont get new fans EVER👏 if you gatekeep your content so badly. FFS.

That's just the way it works in the US. It's like the Super Bowl - They never (rarely) talk about the 2003 Super Bowl but rather Super Bowl XXXVII for example. It sounds more "glamorous" I think (personally). EDIT: Upon further thinking, the Monaco Grand Prix and Le Mans 24 Hours also do it this way. Take a look at their yearly posters for example. I guess it only makes sense if it's an older established yearly sporting event.
