Quick video about 2000 ton hydraulic forging press and how it can be so amazingly fast with some clever design and pressure accumulators.

CORRECTION TO THE VIDEO: I said on the video that there is gas inside of the pressure accumulators but they actually use just air there (air is also gas I know :D). But I think it's interesting fact since usually you have to use nitrogen on your pressure accumulators but I think water as an fluid can handle just pure air so it's easier solution.

I would have thought they would be using nitrogen in the accumulators.
@Speeder84XL

I guessed it was air already from the beginning and the term "gas" was to describe how it behave under pressure (with gas being highly compressible and has the ability to store energy that can be released into the system, as opposed to the liquid that's almost uncompressible). But interesting that you have to use just nitrogen in normal systems - I didn't know about that. But not surprising, since oxygen will cause the oil to oxidize (especially at the high pressures in hydraulic systems, the oil will oxidize a lot faster than it does in "open air" as well). Water can't oxidize, so there is no point removing the oxygen there.

High pressure air in contact with oil could cause a disaster by igniting, or cause a mess by oxidizing the oil over time. High pressure air in contact with water is just cheaper.

Brilliant job on explaining how the forge press works in English language Lauri. I assume the high pressure accumulators are piston type, ref Air to Water, most accumulators using oil, have a rubber nitrile bladder pre-booked with Nitrogen. Nice to see a very well organized company, I would not like to pay the company's electric utility bill!. Great vlog thanks for sharing. Best regards from the UK. John.

For some reason they did not let me play with it and I always wondered what it would be capable of, I watched it bend some pretty big steel rods and bars and thought "wouldn't it be fun to put random shit in here and crush it"? I used to run several types of presses. They ranged from 60 ton up to 3000 ton. The 3000 ton press was usually run at 2000 tons to protect the tooling. We didn't forge metals, we compressed powdered metals in molds to make parts that were run in furnaces. They ended up as solid as if they were machined from a solid piece of metal.

Really interesting to see how the systems differ due to the end user requirements. We have a 1500+ ton press at work with no accumulators but two pumps rated around 250 hp or 180,000 kw. Full pressure is only required for the end of the stroke for most jobs and the high speed is is accomplished by gravity.

To add some clarification the cylinders on the sides are slave cylinders powered by a high volume low pressure pump. The big cylinder in the center is a single acting ram powered by a high pressure low volume pump. Those rams have what's called a prefill value which it pretty large and it's only purpose is to allow the hydraulic fluid to quickly flow in and out of that cylinder while the slaves are actuating the press.

Make your own Glacier in the hydraulic press by compressing food grade snow, (not yellow snow, not snow dump snow). Put the snow in a container that is the same inside diameter as a core drill, about 10cm (more on this below) and press to max pressure, add layers intill container is full of compressed snow like a glacier. Now use the core drill to cut a similar size piece of ice from frozen lake, make a 3rd sample by freezing water in a similar container in your home freezer, and finally if you can, attain real glacier ice and use the core drill to make a 4th sample. Once you have all the samples put them into the press and crush them to see which is strongest. And the last thing will be to collect broken ice from man made glacier (remember, use food grade snow), ice from freezer and glacier ice and make an adult beverge of your choosing using this ice to see if there is any taste difference.

Modern machines can have pretty nice controls. As a summer job ~15 years ago, I drove a forklift with a paper roll clamp. The forklift had four little "joysticks" (lift up/down, tilt forward/back, rotate claw clockwise/anticlockwise, grab/let go) which were operated with four fingers simultaneously. The controls were super responsive and accurate. It was quite easy to make 2-3 different movements simultaneously (doing 4 would be stupid bc how or why would you grab or let go of a 4000kg paper roll while you're rotating and moving it in the air). So the electric forklift in the video probably just has ergonomic controls and inside it someone who has driven it for a while.
