Film Photography Friday - Leica 50mm Summicron vs Jupiter 8 Lens Test!
Not an apples to apples comparison obviously. A $50 Russian Jupiter 8 lens vs a gen 4 Leica Summicron 50mm are on different planets. But for a cheap range finder lens the Jupiter 8 is great!
This is a test using film and my Leica M3 camera. Film is Legacy Pro 100 ASA 35mm film
Lets see how these two lenses compare.

Its should be noted, that the two lenses compared are from two different areas, and of two different formulas. The Jupiter is basically unchanged from the pre war Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar it derives from, and completely lacks the modern multi coating of the Summicron shown here.

Cool comparison Jimmy! Yes, the Summa is definitely sharper, but also the tones and contrast were much better...but as you said....it costs a lot more. I have to say you I really appreciate all the work you put into this video, I mean you shot the film, developed it, printed the prints and than scanning them to show...so we can see the differences is a lot of time and work. Again, I really appreciate this video.

Hi Jimmy! This was really interesting. There was a difference for sure. That would make a great shelf for your scotch! I guess the saying you get what you pay for! We had 63 today, rain tomorrow, and snow Sunday! Have a great weekend. Thank you for the video.

Yes, it would! 63 is pretty nice. I guess we were around 12c (55f ish) here today. We've been having weeks of spring like weather, which is early. Have an awesome weekend Nancy

The difficulties are from the Jupiter needing a rebuild and possibly rangefinder calibration. The Summicron will have been better aligned and calibrated for the Leica body. The Summicron’s coatings would have given better contrast. The cement in the Jupiter seemed cloudy causing a veiling haze. The Jupiter is a Zeiss design from the 1930s. I wonder how they would compare shot on digital sensors with both achieving critical focus. Interesting test!

Thank you for the awesome comment. Much appreciated. I believe I was using Legacy Pro 100. I use ilford HC at 1:31 for 6.5 minutes, 68f, agitate/rotate every minute for 10 seconds. For years now I have been using Formulary's TF-4 Archival Rapid Fixer 👍🍻👌

Great comparison, the huge work done! One thing I want to mention, the Jupiter is Soviet union lens rather than Russian. They are was produced on a modern territory of Russia I agree but we should not forget that part of them was produced in Kyiv, Ukraine as well. And all documentation about this type of lenses, ( It is actually German lenses ) was given after WWII German capitulation, where USSR was involved ( not only Russia ) Cheers.

It looks like you have a bad J8. Early, like 1950's, KMZ are good.

The Leitz has to be 40 times better than the Jupiter (50x40=2000) - if so, it's o.k.;-))
