In this video I will show you how to remove the carburetors and clean all the jets and passages of the carburetors on a 2000 Kawasaki ZX6R. This job is more easily done with the carbs off the bike although most of the cleaning, if not all, could be done with the carbs on the bike. Ensure you buy a large can of carb cleaner because there are many holes that could be possibly blocked.
Comment down below if you have a question about the procedure or this bike.

hey guys, thanks for the informative video. I admittedly have neglected my zzr after getting a bmw, so during my recent move when I needed to move my bike, I started it up and gas was spewing out of the vent hose that routes to the front cowling. My guess is a stuck float. So I removed the carbs and looking into the cylinders I was surprised by the sheer amount of buildup along the inner walls, and unsurprisingly two of the cylinders had unspent gas pooled inside. My question is should the cylinders look as clean as the ones shown in your video, and what would this build up that I have in mine be indicative of? Thank you!

I inherited a 92zx600d, what do you call the part where the cables hook to the carburetor thing, throttle was stuck one of the lead ends of cable was only half there and had to fix the end on the pull end half the part holds other half of lead part to that part, my linkage hooks in the middle of the 4 carbs, how do they come apart

do you know the adjustment for the idle and main jets? do they have to be back off any amount? I ran mine all the way in upon reinstall and the bike idles fine and smooth but dies when I give it any amount of throttle.

@Calvinm

This might sound odd but if this bike in particular sat outside in the rain it likely got water in the gas tank. When I had this bike, it had this issue. I suspect the seal around the gas cap on the top of the tank wasn’t watertight. For a while, me and a friend thought the bike had carb issues because like you said it would have a hard time starting or sputter on acceleration, but it turns out it was just water sitting in the bottom of the gas tank getting sucked up into the carburetters instead of gas. Drain off the carburetors and drain out the entire gas tank, fill the gas tank with fresh gas and don’t leave the bike in the rain and hopefully that solves your problem. Best of luck! What a funny coincidence for you to find this video.

I stripped like 3 carb bowl screws lmao Be careful taking the carb bowl screws off they are made of soft metal and tend to strip. And if they do strip they are M5 x .08 (metric 5 by .08 thread spacing). I'm on a 2002 zx6r and I could only find the replacement screws at Oreilys. Good luck everyone!

Great video, I appreciate it. But I've got one question. Does it run well, because on 6:24 the membrane-cover doesn't meet the passage with the 2mm gasket. Near the choke-cable-holder. Looks like the cover is upside down and is sucking air on both sides, trough halve holes. Beside that, keep up the good work.
@Calvinm
@Calvinm 2 жыл бұрын
Yep it ran well, I don't really see this misalignment you're talking about. It's basically impossible to put the membrane cover in upside down or backwards because of the slide shape.

@@Calvinm I see what he’s talking about. The he’s saying the cap/cover is on 180* out. The little nub that’s poking out near the intake side of the carburetor on the one he is tightening isn’t supposed to be there it’s supposed to go the other way. It’s definitely on wrong unless you guys fixed it after that clip

A lot of the Japanese carbs use the JIS head screws, not the Phillips head... They look very similar, but using a Phillips head screwdriver with them will often strip out he head because the angle of the head is sharper on the Phillips and it will bottom out in the JIS screw, thus not giving full contact... If you see the head of a carburetor screw all bunged up, that is most likely what happened... JIS screw heads will often have a dot in one quadrant, but not always... From looking at the way your screwdriver did not bottom out correctly, I suspect you were not using a JIS screwdriver... If you don't have a JIS screwdriver, you can sometimes modify an existing one with a file or die grinder to make the point a less sharp angle...

You don’t “need” to sync carbs after cleaning them because the cleaning shouldn’t change the synchronization BUT syncing carbs is the next step is solving a carburetor issue.

Brake clean and carb clean are interchangeable in my mind. The difference is that brake cleaner is harsher on plastics and rubbers so if you’re going to use brake clean on your carb just remove all rubber and plastic components before cleaning. Either will clean effectively though. Good luck 👍

How often do you have to do this for a carbed engine?
@Calvinm
@Calvinm 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on how the bike is stored for long periods of time. If you ride the bike almost everyday then you might not ever have to do this unless there is sediments in your fuel or tank that makes its way into the carbs. Usually you have to clean carbs because they sat for a few months with gas in them. The gas evaporates and leaves the dissolved solids in the gasoline in the small passages of the carbs. Best way to avoid this if you have to store the bike is to drain the carb bowls before parking the bike. This way there is no gas to leave any residue behind. 👍

What do we do after putting the carbs back in??
@Calvinm
@Calvinm 3 жыл бұрын
Check for leaks once the fuel line is reconnected. Prime the carbs by turning the key to "on" and activating your fuel pump a couple times then try starting the bike. It may take a few cranks before the bike fires up because it has to fill all four carb bowls with gas. Double check for leaks, and if the bike won't idle, or idles high, you likely have a vacuum leak on a carb boot between cylinder head and carb.

I absolutely HATE carburetors... Or at least I do these days since they contaminate our fuel supply with ethanol... If you leave the bike sitting for any length of time, the ethanol gunks up the carburetor and you need to have it overhauled... Seems like every time I want to ride one of my carbureted bikes, the carburetor needs overhauling, so I just ride my fuel injected Harley instead...

I'm fairly certain Calvin MC is from Canada, as he pronounces "z" as zed. Us Americans do not do this. However gasoline seems to be misspelled from the word cazeline, which changed to gazeline, and gasoline from there. Generations after followed the strange notion to call it gasoline (gas for short). Some patterns are just set in stone.
