I really appreciate you guys putting in the time and effort to create this video. I very closely followed it step by step and was able to replace my head gasket and fix the issue I was having with exhaust gases flowing into the cooling system. There is no way I would be able to do it without this video! For anyone out there who is wondering if this is a job they should do themselves, I will be honest with you. This is a pretty difficult, time consuming, and stressful job if you are just an amateur mechanic like myself. These guys are pros and make it look easier than it actually is. From start to finish it took me 3 days to complete. It was pretty stressful for me because I was very nervous about reassembling everything considering the important components that had to be removed, such as the timing belt, valve train, and cam shaft, as well as the seals. I feared I would not be able to reassemble everything or I would mess something up in the engine. About half way through I was regretting taking on the job myself. However, I persevered and I'm proud to say that I was able to complete this job successfully. My car runs great, my issue is gone, and I saved around $1,000! If you decide to do this job, here's a few tips from me: 1) Before you start, put the vehicle off the ground with jackstands and remove the engine oil and coolant. 2) Make sure you are drinking ample amounts of beer or using nicotine so you can keep your cool and calm your nerves🤣. 3) Use penetrating oil and make sure you have good contact with some of the bolts that need to be loosened. Take your time, I had a few close calls with stripping the heads on a few bolt heads and I don't live in the rust belt. 4) Keep track of all your bolts and parts, I would recommend using sandwich bags and labels for everything you remove. I should have been more organized, it would have made reassembly easier. 5) At 15:40, that 5th manifold bolt is a PITA to loosen. You can't get a long wrench in there so you just have to pull it as hard as you absolutely can to loosen it. I was trying to get it loose for a while. Eventually I gave it everything I had and I was able to get it. However I didn't need to remove it because I ended up propping up the head like they do in the video and just replacing the gasket without removing the head because I didn't see any damage. Before I put on the new gasket I very carefully cleaned all the mating surfaces with a microfiber towel. This approach worked for me, but if You're head is warped or has surface damage then you need to remove it and have it machined. I hope everything goes smooth for you. Good luck!

Just bought my son an 03 ex, and it smokes heavy white on cold starts for a good two minutes. May be condensation in the exhaust, but my gut tells me it’s coolant in the combustion chamber, which would lead me to do what they did in this vid. Never done a head gasket myself; might be learning the hard way. What head gasket kit/set did you use? Any parts list?
@noneyabusiness368

@@tbarton5107go with a Felpro kits. You can replace the head bolts buts its not absolutely needed if this is the 1st time the head gasket's blown. About to do mine again, 1st time in was around 126000 miles ive now got 337000 miles in it so I've opted to replace the bolts this time. Another thing to consider go back after around 5-8000 miles and recheck the head torque again, glad i did at the time because they were not to spec.

Had some problems getting my car started after replacing the head gasket on my 2001 Honda Civic LX. Good compression on all cylinders except cylinder 1 was a little lower than I’d like it to be. Ended up tearing everything apart to check the timing, torque specs on the head bolts, etc. Ended up just putting everything together again to just try it out and it started up after 2 cranks. I have no idea why it wasn’t starting but I’m not mad that it started up with no knocking. Extremely helpful video. Would have been more helpful to have you guys reassemble the whole thing to help save some time with scrubbing through the video. Forever grateful. Thanks guys.

Huge help/confidence builder ! I admit I was dismayed, but not discouraged, to discover that on a 2004 Civic EX it was impossible to lift the intake manifold more than an inch without disconnecting more wiring and hoses. Luckily I was able to remove/install the dreaded intake manifold center nut by removing the plate above and putting a gear wrench down inside. My son and my wallet thank you !!

Love your video - I was able to do my roommate's gasket job this way. It certainly does get a little anxious to wiggle the timing belt around trying to slide them back in, but I took your word for it that the crank won't move as easy as you think.. or that belt skipping just doesn't happen all that easily as some say. The car runs nice and smooth now. Thanks again!

I'm not the most mechanically inclined, but I recently replaced the valve cover/intake gasket on my 2001 Acura MDX and it was pretty easy. As the trans is going out (bought at an auction) i'd rather sell the car and get a civic. I found one online for $1,000 with the head gasket being the issue. After seeing this video, I know with confidence I can do this job. It's highly similar to a valve cover gasket job, just with one extra part of taking off the head. My minimal research for the replacement gasket is about $100, the rest is elbow grease. I hope I can sell my car in time to buy this civic and have it going again to be my daily driver! Thanks for the confidence boost guys!

Had a cylinder 3 misfire since owning my '01 and burning a quart every 1000 miles. For ALL of the exhaust manifold nuts/studs/bolts, needed to heat them up with acetylene torch to get them to crack at all. luckily i got them all and didn't snap a stud inside the head. getting my head resurfaced/rebored at a local shop and got a top end gasket kit from rock auto, new exhaust manifold nuts/studs, along with anything else I break along the way lol but overall nice video :) made my life a hell of a lot easier.

Note, for all having hard time putting timing belt back on gear. It can be tight so aline the belt with the mark and just put half of belt on gear, then get a very small soft rope about quarter inch rope , a little over 2 ft long, work it over the belt on the side That is not on the gear. Pull it up as far as you can up the belt, hopefully with in two splines of the mark ,then pull the rope up and toward the motor and with your finger hold it there and move the rope two splines and repeat. You will find as you move the rope further around the gear it will get easier. I had to do this because everything in the timing belt idler water pump was new. Hopes this helps it took me 3 days to figure this out. BUDRO

I like the trick with unbolting and leaving the water inlet housing assembly attached... Saves time for sure, but I recommend also replacing timing belt, water pump if you're already doing this job, if you know that the vehicle still has not had it changed.

P Tourne WOW!! Thank you. Us specializing in only head gaskets for the past 12 years, and me being a master mechanic for the past 22 years sure could learn from you. I’m so thankful you were here to show us the error of our ways. Please, allow me to be your disciple. the point of the video is for instructional purposes, and we covered the water pump/timing belt recommendation already in the actual video that you commented on.

@@mikehernandez9903 Awesome. I didn't take mine to machine shop. I Just cleaned everything extra well and even did some light sanding with a sanding sponge. My intake parts was super full of gunk cleaned the crap out of that. And just put the gasket on there.

Are the only bolts that need to be torqued in this process, the ones you showed using the 3 torque passes of 14 / 36 / 49? Thanks. Really appreciate the video and the description of each step.

I noticed you removed the valve rocker assembly and came shaft. Was any valve adjustment needed afterwards? I was recommended to remove just the cam pully and hold it to the belt while leaving the valve assembly on. Which do you find easier or recommend?

So quick question, I did everything you said to do, but when I put the rocker arm assembly back on, I have 1-2 valves being pressed down. Is that normal? Based on the cam lobe positions I feel like there’s no way around it unless I re do the timing.

Hey Jorge-I agree the vid is pretty good. I'm in the middle of attempting this job, and wondering what I got myself in to. Still have to get at the nuts/bolts on the intake side, but this vid goes over that section (both removing and reinstalling) very fast, so I'm getting nervous on proceeding. Do you have additional vids/sites that you can suggest?
@purodesmadre713

@@carnahangreen1391 the bottom middle nut on the intake side I was not able to get it off the way they showed by lifting up the head and going under, I placed the head back down and went under the vehicle with a ratchet wrench and same goes for putting it back on it was really tough to get it back on the threads and turn it. I also used alldataDIY.com so I could look at the diagrams and get torque specs but this was really the only video I used as a guide. Also pretty much all my head bolts creaked when I tightened them down even though I cleaned out the holes so I continued as carefully as I could with a click type torque wrench. The beers also helped me with the frustration. Good Luck!

@@purodesmadre713 Thanks so much for the additional info. Very helpful, and your workaround of going under the car to get at the fifth bolt sounds to me the better way--event though the high difficulty remains. Thanks, also, for that alldatadiy site. Had not found this, it looks tremendously helpful. Yeah, just not sure if I'll proceed at this point or reverse course. Any info is super appreciated. Cheers.

Hey Jorge. One more question if you dont mind concerning my other primary concern moving forward: how difficult was it to squeeze the timing belt back on to the rocker assembly-wheel. That section was also skipped over in the vid. Certainly the removal looked simple enough. But putting back on: did you need prying tool or extra hands.. ? Thx again.
@purodesmadre713
@purodesmadre713 3 жыл бұрын
@@carnahangreen1391 Ah yes let me tell you the tale... I had a difficult time because I screwed up the reassembly of my rocker arms making it practically impossible to put the timing belt back on. Once I corrected my mistake I needed my brother to remove the tensions on the timing belt while I used both hands to force the belt back on. You need two people in my opinion because you really need both hands to force it back on.
