To this day, the finale of '2001' still gives me the the most awesome goosebumps of any movie ever made, and there must be really good reasons for that. Years ago, when I still didn't feel like I understood it, I felt it. Now, after countless viewings, endless discussion, and a sense of understanding it deeply, it's even better. To this day, I've never seen another movie that has transported me into what seems like the inner life of the universe. If that isn't goosebump-worthy, nothing is.

Exactly!! This is one of those few movies that gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. The music and visuals go hand-and-hand with each other. The vast infinite size of the universe and its limitless secrets is why I can watch this a hundred times, and STILL find something new to be in awe at.

1:25 Arthur C. Clarke's novel came out after the movie, not before. Clarke and Kubrick wrote the film together as an original screenplay.

I noticed that too. He could have just said it was loosely based on the short story "The Sentinel."

Amazing production design is a vast understatement. Tony Masters world takes this movie into another dimension. That pod bay alone is unreal.

What I hate is that I have friends that do not value these kind of movies and never seem to understand them and prefer to watch junk that they are never willing to understand and that they simply watch because it is popular and do not consider anything that was made before the year 2000 as watchable. In the end I reallize that it doesn't matter really. These people will be forgotten like they have been willing to forget these movies.

@robotpanda77 Read "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" by Frederik Nietzsche and then watch the movie again (actually, that´s also the main musical theme´name) . It´s not a must, but you´ll get the idea more clearly. This is a very deep film and we are only used to consider a plot when it has dialogues. This is a movie that speaks on images and that is pretty much abstract. Most of people just don´t get it. It happened to me the first time also. I didn´t know what did I saw but I was astonished.

I have to admit, it took me awhile to like this movie. I hated it until it got to the jupiter mission part, it was just boring, and I thought it was completely pointless to show shot after shot of space stations. But the last half completely blew me away, and so I watched the entire thing over, and it's become my favorite movie

a value this movie very much. it is awe inspiring, amazingly crafted, and is superb in it's production design........ but god damnit. To this day I still can't watch the movie without pausing and grabbing a cup of coffee. it's a long son of a bitch. I fell asleep the first time watching it. my friend's always tell me, "you're suppose to appreciate it like ballete," and I also reply, "Yeah, and both 2001 and ballete put me to fucking sleep."

This whole series is TERRIBLE about spoilers. I wouldn't watch a single one about a film I haven't already seen. Such a shame because his commentary is otherwise very good.

Tbf most of the people who attended the premiere of 2001 aren't probably among the living anymore. 40-50 years after release is pretty safe regarding spoilers.

The monolith is a monument of time. Maybe the monoliths exist because we placed them there the last time we evolved to that point. The monoliths are a reminder of our own undoing, man is temporary in nature. Stanley really makes George look kind of schmaltzy. 2001 and Star Wars occurred in different galaxies far far away.

I wouldn't say this film has a "plot". It is mostly drawn out hallway and space shots. The monolith is a interesting concept though ambiguous, but that is about it. Take for example the fetus floating in space scene. That is just utterly ridiculous, and if you need to apply layers of metaphor to make it into something grand, you could make any movie sound good.

Yep, it's The Emperor's New Clothes, 1969 style. If anyone doesn't "get" the film a bunch of holier-than-thou critics - and the usual cast of losers who slept through Film Study 101 - will tell that viewer that he simply isn't intelligent to fathom the "layered" or "contextual" meaning of this masterpiece. IOW if you got enough people to drop acid and watch "Bedtime for Bonzo" then THAT might have been rated the best picture of the 20th Century!
