I just finished a book "Your Money or your Life" by Vicki Robbins. The basic thesis is that we trade our time for money and then buy things that we hope will be make us happy. So in effect we trade our time for the hope of happiness. So we should ask ourself if this thing really makes us happy, and if it really doesn't, then we should spend our time/life energy on it. Its been very eye opening for me, because I have realized that very few things actually bring true happiness. That sounds like a negative statement on the surface, but for me its been freeing to be honest with myself about what makes me happy. And learning that "things" rarely make us happy. I still love cars and will have more in the future but I'm no longer chasing more and more and more to keep making me more happy like a drug addict or something.

Can't tell u how much I agree with the work stuff. If I've learned anything it's that being happy is WAY more important than having more money. Waking up and enjoying what u do is worth so much.

Good for you ted. I also have been wanting to leave my job because I'm not happy as well. I'd much rather enjoy my cars and work for myself at this point of myself. Like you I stat working simply for the money and benefits but eventually ones realizes that one's own time is much more valuable than money. I'll stay tuned to see how it all works out for you.

I've been busy working on my cars. Also driving my 5 speed manual Volkswagen mk3.5 Cabrio a lot. It has been sunny up here in Couer D' Alene, Idaho. So I've been driving with the top down! There is 3 cases confirmed here and a dozen in Spokane, Washington. So it is not as bad where you are at, but I am watching and preparing for it to get worse.

I’ve been getting to a point where my work and the money isn’t worth the reward, proof that money doesn’t buy happiness. I’ve been laid off temporarily due to this virus and in the meantime I’ve been just enjoying my m3 and working on it which has brought me much more happiness than any amounts of money ever has.

Great video. I totally relate to the job frustration. Even worse when there's stuff that needs to be done but can't get to because I'm stuck at work all the time. My 2003 is an almost exact clone of yours, including the full leather interior. Only difference is my car has the rear folding seats. No doubt my upper dash pad will have to have the leather replaced. Major shrinkage around those small defrost vents on the side. But there's much more important stuff that will need to be sorted before I get to it such as suspension and also cooling system as well. Looking forward to the next video and stay safe.

Ted, just a suggestion. On my e90 M3 I had the tinted apply 3M Crystalline on the windshield and sunroof. It’s 100% worth the money. It’s not dark at all so you won’t get pulled over. It blocks more UV and heat than anything on the market. Really saves the interior of the car. And who likes to get into a car with a hot steering wheel. I still use sunshade for 100% coverage. But it really lowers the glare and when driving you can’t use the oem Bmw sunshade.

You can buy beefed up radiators and water pumps with metal impellers. Don’t replace it with OEM, on FCP they have the better quality parts that will last you longer. Imagine never having to worry about the plastic impeller in your water pump breaking.

Hi man, love the channel and just subscribed! In the thoughts of buying an M5 now, life is short what the hell, its my dream car so far. But of course, its not free. Question, have you driven the 540i e39 and whats the difference would you say? Clearly 120ish hp more in the M5. Huge cost difference for example in maintenance? Curious :)

Take a look at the valve covers, they could be warped. Or maybe the installation of the gaskets wasn’t done properly. Regarding the water pump, they’re robust. I changed mine at 107k miles and it was in good condition. Also its time consuming to change, you have to remove the crank hub to get at the last screw. I did change the radiator since it has the plastic sides. The e39 m5 is a fun DYI car if you’re mechanically inclined. I also have an 89 930 Turbo. Thats a different animal !! Cheers !!

Replacing the valve cover gaskets on these can be tricky to get 100% right if you don’t check tutorials; there are some details you won’t get if you don’t check them.

Doesn't leather on the dash mean you have full leather pack? I have extended leather and it is on the center console and a few other places, but not on the dash. Either way, always nice to see my car's twin!

Over here in Europe (Austria to be precise) we are basically under lock down. The public live has almost come to a stop. Schools, cinemas, theaters and large shopping malls are almost closed except grocery stores of course. The Soccer League has been cancelled for now. In these times I'm very fortunate to live in a small town near a lake, It's very quiet these days. Let's see how all this turns out, stay safe.

Recheck the torque on the valve cover bolts and make sure that the old leak was cleaned up

Re: cooling system refresh. The E39 M5 water pump is all metal (stainless steel). I replaced mine at 164,000 miles, and it looked good enough to put back in. I wouldn’t worry about the water pump. Replace the thermostat; they fail constantly. Replace the hoses, but leave the radiator alone. Mine’s original at 172,000mi. Replace the fan clutch. You could also upgrade to the spiral blade design of the E53 X5 and E65 7-series; they’re reputed to be quieter and waft more air.

The cooling systems are what breaks that car. Between the plastic reservoir and the plastic tubes under the manifold, and even the Tstats/water pump. I have barely any heat in my e46 and everything I listed have already been replaced.. also the Plastic Valve covers are crap. They split and break all the time. Other then that, they’re one of the best models of bmw ever made. The m50/m52/m54 engines are special.

E39 M5 is the car to drive to the end of the world. Love it! I'll be really sad if we don't have Larz events this year, but hoping that the car community will gain some perspective and realize we're all on this asteroid together.

I have an opportunity to buy a 2001 M packaged 530i with a 5 spd. Enthusiast owned and garage kept. But will need a clutch soonish. Power windows inop. But the car is beautiful. But needs a little sorting. Mechanically great. With above average cosmetics. Cold ac and new new Michelins. Is it worth $2000?

Read up a little more on M5 cooling systems. They’re very robust, water pump has zero plastic parts. Main issues are the T stats partially failing.

Oh Dear, about valve cover gasket, there´s a BMW repairshop near to the shop i work, i used to buy BMW parts there when we needed, and one thing a notice, they always have a huge stock when it comes to valve cover gaskets and valve retainers, are those common BMW issues?

Man do you have any rattles inside the car? Mine is bad in bad roads all seem to be coming from the "back seat area" any thoughts?
