2001 Dodge Dakota Rear Latch Handle Fix and Replace Free DIY

Күн бұрынI just bought my new truck! 2001 Dodge Dakota 4.7L with the tow package.
The rear latch handle was stuck open, which was making it so the liftgate would not stay shut. In this video, I show you how to remove the handle and fix it using some brake cleaner and transmission fluid.
Once you get the latch free'd up, it is a good idea to add some grease to it so it won't get frozen again. You could also replace the handle if you want, but I decided to keep my original one as it was functioning 100% after the fix. You can find the handle and latch assembly for about $20 dollars on eBay, which isn't too expensive.

I have an ‘05 Dakota. Similar issue but not quite as rust-bound. I was able to remove the handle molding and get everything moving without taking the entire mechanism out of the tailgate. This video certainly gave me a head start--thanks very much.

I'm another one helped by this video. TY much... As well as a totally frozen handle my 99 also had sticky latches at the corners which we sprayed repeatedly and worked the moving parts while in place. All thing considered it took a good 1-1.5hr to remove/replace handle and have everything loosened up and working. The rubber mat/liner was too thick on the right side so I cut it back 1/2" and that's when it went from fixed to working nice and easy with no need to slam it to get the right side to latch too. Regular shots of WD might be good maint for it all.
