Iowa started fast on offense by scoring 21 first-quarter points for the second straight week to beat archrival Minnesota, 42-24 in Kinnick Stadium. A crowd of over 65,000 witnessed the Hawkeyes win back Floyd of Rosedale. The game was played under sunny skies and near 70-degree temperatures.
The Hawkeyes scored touchdowns on their first six possessions of the day. Iowa dominated on both offense and defense in building a 28-3 halftime advantage. The Hawkeyes led 42-10 after three quarters before Minnesota added two touchdowns in the final 15 minutes. Senior RB Ladell Betts led the Hawkeye ground game with 171 yards and a touchdown on 28 caries.
Iowa's quarterbacks were nearly perfect in their execution. Senior Kyle McCann completed 10-11 passes (the incompletion was intentionally thrown away) for 159 yards and three scores. Junior Brad Banks completed all three of his passes for 47 yards.
Senior WR Kahlil Hill had three receptions for 53 yards and three returns for 80 yards while sophomore TE Dallas Clark had four catches for 96 yards. Hill and Clark each had touchdown receptions.
Senior DE Aaron Kampman led the Hawkeye defense as Minnesota was held to 107 yards rushing. Kampman recorded 10 solo tackles and five assists, including three QB sacks. He was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for his performance. Linebacker Fred Barr had 13 tackles, DB Bob Sanders had 11 tackles, and DB Benny Sapp had an interception and four pass break-ups.
The game was the final performance in Kinnick Stadium for 19 Hawkeye seniors. Members of the 1981 Hawkeye Big Ten Championship football team also witnessed the game. The group was celebrating the 20th anniversary of Iowa's trip to the 1982 Roe Bowl.
