I've had my v6 since 2002 and I totally agree! some people think its a big departure from mercury's older cars with their big cushy seats and spacious interiors, but this car although small is not a compact car. It is a fully loaded small sized sedan/coupe even for a v6 is great on gas and it handles amazingly in the corners without any leaning and has enough power to spare. Go find any other American car that has all these options in this year for this price and this size car. Chances are very slim that many cars compared to this car at the time. My car is immaculate inside and out. It has 56k miles and all that I have changed on it besides the oil regularly was an alternator and battery. I redid the wheel bearings and some tie rods and control arms because the ball joints dry rotted from age. That is all. The stereo even KICKS in this car! Back then you needed some after market or spend an additional 2000 dollars for an upgrade option stereo on most cars from the dealer to get a decent sound. This cars stock stereo kicks and sounds great for all types of music.

I also think that they are an underrated tuner car, though it also has transmission issues.

The cougar was quite reliable except the alternator and the heated seats those broke quite often not sure about the automatic transmission one tho

You say an Alfa can be reliable, but any GM is unreliable. Quite the opposite actually. 90’s and early 2000’s GM were very reliable, but i’ve heard nothing but bad about Alfa Romeo reliability. I’m sure they MAYBE could if you’re willing to pay the price.

about 1200 miles into the car, so much fun. in the range of speeds you go on the roadway this car can maneuver, pass, and get out of the way of danger very well. small and low to the ground, it has lots of grip on a dry road and the suspension is tight and allows the car to corner with lots of confidence and grip, provided fresh tires. In my opinion very underrated. it performs excellently in everyday highway and back road driving, and you can fit alot into this cars trunk, especially with the back seat down. with a sport interior and seating position, and an awesome stock stereo system, it is a blast to drive on highway and smooth country roads. as far as fuel efficiency, if you can maintain the discipline to drive 5 or so under with the windows up and the stereo off it can do up to 23+MPG. if you don't, expect 20 or less. as far as cons, the transmission and electronics are a bit wacky, now that the car is out of production the replacement parts can be expensive or hard to find.

IceColdMeat Did you ever buy it? I just bought a 2002 cougar v6 manual. 179xxx miles for 1000. Drove it 2 hours home and it did fine though mine needs new struts.

I'm considering a cougar 2002 year. I don't know if I would fit in it, i'm 6'3".

@@icecoldmeat4046 I had a ZX2 and loved it. Same engine if you opt for the 4cyl. Mine ran like new 100k+ miles. But I've heard the 4cyl is a bit underpowered for the weight of the Cougar. Zachary how is your V6 holding up? I've never heard of any major common problems for either engine. I bet the manual trans is fun.

My guess is that the car did not sell well because it was simply trying to look too much like the Mitsubishi Eclipse that was out around the same time as that car, if not a year or two before this car was made, anyway.

Yarely Ramirez Most people say it's from a bad IAC valve. I bought a 2002 cougar v6 manual and it does the same thing.

IAC valve is pretty rugged, sounds like a vacuum leak at the IAC hose

its a whole different car with the excellent Porsche designed V6

+ThatOneDopeChick I would say no. These cars have virtually disappeared from Canadian roads because they weren't reliable enough for our climates.

+misamisatv they are more geared for sports cars therefore do not handle well in snow/rain. The rim size doesn't allow for an all season/ winter tire :( I live in Chicago and that is the only one draw back. I do not believe mine even has ABS. Other wise this car handles great!!
