What Camerons Car Reviews has to say about the 2001 Toyota 4Runner: Now in it's 6th model year the 2001 Toyota 4Runner continues to stay in the midsize SUV market which is highly competitive with the 2001 Ford Explorer being the top sales king and another favorite is the rugged looking Nissan Pathfinder, but that was just to name a few in this crowded segment. Power in the 4Runner comes from a thirsty 3.4 L V6 made into a 4-Speed Automatic. On the interior of the 4Runner you will find it to be very utilitarian and very functional as well. Trims range from the SR5 to the luxurious Limited which will have all of the amenities many people desire. Of Course on top of that you have Toyota's famous reliability as well. So is this enough to compete? Well since the 4Runner is in it's 6th model year it is a bit outdated and a full redesign is needed since the 4Runner has pretty much looked the same since 1991 when the last generation was redesigned, but if your looking for a great off road capable SUV with superb reliability we see the 4Runner as a perfectionist as that.

I paid $ 4,200 cash for my 2001 4Runner with 118k miles back on October 2014. How in the world is this one almost $ 8k?!

@@chrisr5950 I have a 2001 4Runner (2WD) with 295K on it. I've owned it since 25K miles on it. Very diligent with lubrication and oil changes with synthetics. Valve cover gaskets, Timing Belt (make sure yours has been done with receipt) and mostly around emissions. At about 240K the Catalytic Converter failed and had to replace. They are very expensive as OEM and kinda junk as third party. Make sure your is original. I've heard people have been buying cars, pulling out the originals and selling with cheap aftermarket. Brakes, etc are normal. Leak in radiator (older hoses) etc. Alternator. But nothing seriously mechanical in the engine or transmission.

@@chrisr5950 well let me put it this way, it’s so reliable that it’s the number one vehicle I would recommend to a single mother trying to make ends meet. If there is something to replace, the parts are fairly affordable by comparison to other vehicles. When I first bought it I immediately did a tune up and replaced the timing belt & water pump as preventative maintenance. Shortly after I flushed the transmission fluid and replaced with new fluid. I didn’t have many problems at all just normal stuff like replacing the battery, alternator, tires etc. I have since upgraded the wheels to 16” and bigger tires (BF Goodrich all terrain) replaced the radio with a 6” touchscreen, reupholstered the front seats now they look like new. I’ve also added a 2” lift by using OME springs in the front and rear and Dobinsons shocks front and rear. I absolutely love the truck and won’t ever sell it. My next step is to finally upgrade the component speakers with Infinity Kappas with an amp and add an powered 8” Kicker sub for some added bass.

Great review. My dad had the same exact model but his was in green and it was a 2000. He got into a accident in October and it was totaled. We surely miss this SUV

My dad got a 2011 Honda Odyssey for only 11.5k and it's very good. The engine works perfectly fine and the bottom of the car still good. This 4Runner seems terrible for 8k.
