Jeff Stone reviews possible the definitive sports tourer - the Honda VFR 800, and finds out if it's just an old mans bike or if it can hack it with the best of the flashy sports bikes. The VFR 800 produces 107bhp which gives it a top speed of a staggering 180mph, for those brave enough to take it to the limit.

To all of the detractors. The VFR is like a Swiss Army knife. It does everything well but isn’t the best at anything. It’s not the best tourer, but it is perhaps the lightest and sportiest sports tourer out there, if you’re looking for that sort of thing. As a sports bike, it’s not as fast or handles as well as a pure sports bike that weighs 400 pounds but it does handle just fine and he used the word “planted” that was my first impression of the VFR. Riding it on the highway “planted”. Very nice indeed.

I came over to the VFR in 09 after I decided to upgrade my 03 Katana 600. I picked up a low mileage 2006 (3500 miles) and haven't looked back. She absolutely eats up the miles when going for distance, click down a gear or two and she's a blast in the twisties. The only thing you have to get used to is the VTEC engaging when on the tight technical roads.

Bought a 15000 mile 2012 VFR 800X crossrunner for £3600, and its got everything this bike has. Combined braking, ABS and V tech but not as obtrusive. They've made the intake trumpets longer, redesigned the exhaust headers and remapped it. The Crossrunner 800 has more mid-range but less top end It has a more aggressive throttle response thats better suited to back roads and commuting. But itll tour no problem too.

Baring an easily rectifiable dodgy charging system. Still one of the finest bikes ever made throughout a long lifespan to 2009. Touring all day, or corner carving on Sundays, it does it all happily. one of the best bargains around.

Bizarre claims of 180 mph from the VFR800 in this video. There is another Men & Motors review of this bike which claims top speed of 158 mph which is more believable.

I bought a 2002 model 2 years ago and so far had to replace cam tensioners, fuel pump, and radiator thermostat, So yes expect things to go wrong, but I do love the bike.Especially on the twisty's

I think you should organize your videos by play lists. I'm seeing a lot of car videos and its a bit hard to find the motorcycle videos. :) If it's not much of a hassle. :)

Honda should get rid of vtec put the gear drive cams back in and make the true VFR. the 1990 through 1997 were and are the best bikes on the planet. In 1998 the VFR became the interceptor and still had the gear drive camshafts and new fuel injection. The 90 through 97 are still the best though. I have owned at least 12 bikes and the VFR is the best I have ever had for all around usage out of the box. Upgrade the front and rear suspension and you will never go back. HONDA the best built bikes on planet earth

@pinkerton2964

The VFR800 vtech does not do 180mph more like 160mph. Also the VFR800 vtech was not the first bike with variable valve timing the Bandit 400 had it in 1991 and then the cb400 after that. The VFR800 does nothing very well it's not a great tourer a 600 is a better handling sports bike and the Vtech has some of the most expensive servicing cost this side of a Ducati. I only say this as I have owned a VFR800. The combined brakes really limit handling fun and delinked they are poor. Buy a 600 sports or a proper sports tourer like a blackbird.

+james grocott I believe your right on the top end of that bike. I rode one didn't care for vtech cam reminded me of my old 750 with a Kenny harmon d-grind cam. hit 6500 and it jumped up on back wheel pipey ass hell ran high 11's in 1/4. My 600 f3 is very smooth acceleration up to 150 mph don't after that no room haven't taken it Maxton but might come spring 2016
