1:49:55 Final Cup start for Melling Racing, which passed from Harry Melling to his son Mark after Harry's passing in 1999. Bill Elliott joined the team at its inception in 1982 and won all 34 of the team's victories before leaving for Junior Johnson's team in 1992.

1:03:46 - 1:05:17 ... The best part of the race. Bill Elliott had a strong car in the beginning of the race, and the fact that the shifter kept getting knocked out when he was in gear, kept him from competing for the win. But the way Bill Elliott was able to drive that car with one hand, and PASS CARS to boot ... that was EXTREMELY impressive. Bill Elliott is one of the greatest EVER, and even though he finished 22nd (after restarting dead last after the problem occurred), this was one of his most impressive runs ever.

It was my 1st ever Cup race I ever attended as my very first NASCAR race was the Busch race the day before. I was 8 years old at the time. I still go to the June race as a tradition with my dad, and went to this one from 2002-2013, minus 2008.

I was at this race.... ironically, Dale Jarrett was my main driver (followed.by Terry Labonte and Waltrip). Of course, we all know the big rival is Jr and Gordon. THere were two girls sitting in front of us going back and forth as one was a Jr fan and the other was a Gordon fan. This was early on ...maybe even before the race started. I interjected and said, “you are BOTH smoking crack, because MY man is going to win”...LOL. TURN 4 wipeout, wasn’t looking good and then the main man pulled through!!!

The top 7 drivers separated by just 150 points with 14 races left. The closest points battle ever with 14 races left. Shame that this was the second to last year before they started that stupid Chase crap.

15:38 to 19:52 and as of 2015 (13 years later) it still hasn't improved and actually it's gotten worse. Hopefully the low downforce package in 2016 is a big step in improvement.

Ryan Newman really could have won the championship if Rodger Penske didn't keep giving Newman trash engines. I been a fan since 1999 and I saw the entire 2002 season and Newman was a top three speed car on the most consistent basis. Even with his numerous dnfs due to engine or mechanical he still managed the second most top 5s all season and had the MOST top 10s more than anyone all year lmao. Penske failed his only chance to win a title with a rookie cup driver. Even deep in the season Newman with less than 10 races to go was 4th in points literally within striking distance of taking the points lead. As epic as Newman's rookie year was he underachieved mainly thanks to his engine department because Newman did his job. He should have won at least 3 races with how fast he was all year.

When cars were cars and you KNEW who drove what. What happened to the easy-to-recognize paint schemes- UPS, Viagra, Dodge, Tide? Nowadays, it's too many black cars or insert-sponsor here. Take the winner, Dale Jarrett- as much as I loved the Quality Care ford, I miss a unique looking car like UPS nowadays. We want to race the truck!

Partly because hardly any sponsors are willing to spend $20-30 million for the whole season. If the cost of racing wasn't so pricey we'd see them commit to every race like in the past.

@evanwilliams6406
@evanwilliams6406 9 жыл бұрын
***** Steve is a great guy, but he had so many freak things happen, the worst was the 2001 Busch Darlington wreck where he bruised his brain which hurt his speech, then his accident in his rookie year hurt him. Then he tried to come back in 2002, way ahead of schedule but he wrecked every week. Park never made it through a full season except for 1999 and 2003. DEI stuck with him a bit too long, and gave him a new contract about this time and dumped him a year later. While it was a good move at the time, I look back on it as another move that sent the DEI organization down the drain. But Park did show promise in the Trucks, and winning over there.

Yes, who the hell let him back into a car? Were they pretending he was okay or completely ignorant of brain damage indicators?

@@evanwilliams6406 Had he sat out all of 2002, or at least the majority of it, he could've been much better in 2003 and onwards, even run somewhat competitively in the Cup Series. And yes, I'm replying to this comment 8 years after you've originally posted it😂
@evanwilliams6406
@evanwilliams6406 Ай бұрын
@@Corvin152 I thought when they said he would be back at Darlington back then, I thought they meant the Southern 500 or the 2003 Carolina Dodge Dealers 400. Then when I saw him on TV with "Welcome Back Steve!" on FOX, I was like "oh no is he crazy?" and then in the race he crashes while leading when he couldn't get clear of Stacy Compton, and that is what set the ball rolling. He came back way too soon. Steve was physically ready, but he wasn't mentally ready, he couldn't feel his racecar and put it in the right position and the decision making. Maybe Steve got it in his mind he could be tough like Dale Earnhardt but it was clear he was no Dale Earnhardt. Even Earnhardt struggled at times driving hurt.

This was Jr's problem so many races... He would have the best car for most of the race then those last 10-20 laps its like his car would fall off while the others would get stronger... Jr. was always great to start runs & the longer they go green he becomes a worse driver... Some guys become stronger the longer a green run goes... Jr. was never one of those drivers

@@JJA1987 He was never a driver who knew how to save his car or his tires... Some guys knew how to chill in 5 or 10th etc because they knew they had an awesome car & to save it at the end... If Jr. did have a great car he was always the type to be way out in front going 100% not saving his car at all... Then when everyone else been saving tires or been going easier on their cars... They have an advantage late in races while Jr's car is falling off
