I still drive an 02 WRX WRB that I bought brand new in May of 2001. It's only 16 years old. I'm doing timing belt/idlers/tensioner/water pump for the second time very soon, and putting in KOYO aluminum radiator. (181k miles). The 5sp. manual has been rebuilt at 150k miles, the motor is fine. The car is stage 2 tuned, for the last 10 years, with original oem TD04 turbo. I need new shocks/struts in the rear.

@@Ferraridude13 Yes still on original motor/turbo, almost 200k miles on odo (195,550 miles not a daily driver anymore). New shocks/springs, new front/rear oem wheel bearings, new front aluminum control arms (STi), new 'rebuilt' alternator/starter. Needs a new sterring rack, too much play in original, and also the AC comressor is shot, needs one too.

My brother's had one since new (2002 5-speed wagon), still practically stock and low miles, I've driven it a lot. I was driving my 2004 MkIV GTI 1.8T for most of that time, and I preferred my GTI for a lot of it mostly just due to how much more grip and turn-in the GTI offers than the WRX, and a lot of the feel of it, but now my GTI is gone and I've learned to drive his car more properly, it is a blast of a thing. It feels like a rollerskate and it has LOTS of power, the 227/217 rating is deceptively light for how fast it feels. The brakes didn't quite hold up to track work awesomely when my brother joined me at a trackday with it (it was a hot day at Buttonwillow, which is a pretty tough track on brakes), the shifter is notchy (but nicely direct), the clutch is tough to be smooth with until you get a lot of practice and it's easy to induce whipping drivetrain lash, it's economy-car loud inside, the interior plastics are not soft touch...but they are durable, and it's held up very well, and it feels exciting and mechanical and grounded in the act of gripping the road. They are great cars.

maxxjett films : Please see my experience with my 2002 Wagon WRX and tell me if you can relate to any of the issues that I have described. Every 2002 I ever saw on the streets at the time had the broken plastic attachment points between the front bumper and the inner wheel housing. All the dealer ever did was replace the whole big liner in the front wheel housing on each side and then about a month or so later it would crack yet again! What did you do to fix this incredibly annoying problem. Also the manual transmissions were weak as hell on these cars. There were endless stories of blown transmissions. Also the paint was horrible on these cars. It was thin and chipped like crazy on the front end. Rock chips appeared everywhere. Interior plastic panels didn’t line up properly... It was endless......

had an 04 wrx sedan pretty basic stage 2 w/protune, idk about the bumper thing but was on a 2nd trans at around 120k, HG went around then too. the paint was thin and chipped too lol. didnt notice anything wrong with my interior i always thought it was pretty nice considering i come from a background of gutted hondas and rx7s. got boring after a while and didnt wanna invest the money for the power level i wanted.

Ah, the “bug-eye” WRX, those were the days. Subaru timed their introduction to the car in America perfectly. Before 2002, the Japanese performance car market in America was lacking at best. The Nissan Z car, the Toyota Supra, Mazda RX-7, and Mitsubishi 3000GT were all dead. The NSX was on its way out, and the Integra Type-R had just been discontinued. Then Subaru comes along with the WRX and all of a sudden we had a potent performance car that the working class could afford. Then in ‘03 we got the EVO and in ‘04 we got the WRX STI which was all the rage in the car world, almost like the Mustang vs. Camaro debate in the late 1960’s.

I was quite relieved that Subaru USA & Canada got the message that American and Canadian drivers wanted the WRX; which overseas drivers got to enjoy for years before it came to America. I remember my first encounter with this car (this design) at the 2001 Detroit Auto Show and thinking to myself; "AT LAST!"

I purchased my 2002 Bug Eye 5 speed manual in Summer of 2002. Wrote a check for $27,500 and walked out with the title. I shopped a few dealers and the best I could do was knock $700.00 off of list price. With options such as the rare gauges mounted up on the dash by the dealer if my memory is correct...I think the gauge option was $700.00 Ouch! No wonder hardly anyone purchased those. $27,500 sure was a lot of money for 2002 but I planned on keeping her for a long time. That didn’t happen. The synchros went in the transmission at 31K. The clutch had a recall or TSB, YES, I know there is a difference and that needed to be replaced under warranty. The plastic attachment points that held the front bumper on broke about 15+ times per side! Requiring me to go back to the dealership countless times. The sheet “metal” was so thin that dents just happened out of nowhere. A small branch fell out of a tree and landed on that expensive aluminum hood...3 dents. Anything that came in contact with that thin sheet metal left a dent. I have owned a lot of cars and non of them had this problem. I would love to hear from other REX owners who had the bug eye and what they have to say about the beer can thin body. I had so many problems with this car that I had to Lemon Law it. The only time I ever sued anyone for anything was Subaru over this first model year car in America. Yes, it was that bad. But strange as it may seem I would still buy another Subaru because they have a fantastic reputation and I see many old Subies on the road with hundreds of thousands of miles on them.
@NeonNerd87
@NeonNerd87 2 жыл бұрын
I still own one, it's actually aluminum used for weigh savings, not thin sheet metal, i also owned a 2000 legacy GT and it had a regular metal hood and let me tell you i appreciate the light weight aluminum although yes its super easy to get dents, but prettt easy to pull out as well. Its just something that comes with the "sportiness" of the car.

It actually has. First of all, to get that 5.6 second 0-60 time, you had to redline it and dump the clutch, and many of the earlier transmissions failed when you did that. The newer transmissions are much more robust. Also, the newer WRX is actually less expensive in 2002 dollars. But all that said, I agree ... they are in need of a HP upgrade.

I remember watching this or Car & Driver TV about the WRX four-door, and one of their issues with it was with the legroom in the back, and they called it "a four-door coupe" for that reason. Anyone else remember that episode?
@npaul4171
@npaul4171 5 жыл бұрын
I don't remember the episode, but I remember in high school when a buddy got one of these when they were new, that fitting average-sized people in the back seat was not exactly a simple process. As fun as it was, we definitely did not use this car for road trips...

So did I, but I was 8, lol. I'd freak out every time I saw one...I'd get one now if the ricers hadn't ruined all their interiors and insurance rates. Maybe someday I'll have money for a mint example.

Looking at them now, I am struck of how fucking small they were. Literally, sub compact dimensions if not worse. I owned a 1999 RS and still don't remember how truly small it really was.

Does anyone ever wonder if someone still owns these retro review cars? Like the exact one in the view. I’m sure this WRX has quarter panel rust and been owned by 10 different owners- assuming its not already dead.

AutoLounge I just found one with 180k miles for 4500. Lol Has some slight rust on the back left fender and owner claims it still runs well. The worst part of this is its near where I grew up. I'm gonna have my brother in law go check it out and if all is good I'm jumping on it. It's Subaru blue too! I need it!

I do. Not the exact car (2003 Wagon) but bone stock and still going strong with 145K on it. No rust anywhere. They last a long time if maintained and driven well.

Very surprised the price hasn't jumped that much in 18 years, only about $3000 in 2020 than 2002. BMW on the other hand.....

It’s not a ‘poor man’s’ M3. This WRX is more bang for the buck. Anyway to put inflation to perspective, a manual WRX of 2002 costing $24,520 would be $34,473 in 2018. The base 2018 WRX manual is $27K, or $7K cheaper.
