Rod Gibson reviews a 2002 Yamaha Royal Star, checking out it's performance and handling, as well as seeing how practical it is. The Royal Star is possible one of the largest and heaviest production motorbikes ever built, and has a 1294cc V4 engine.

I own a 2005 Royal Star Tour Deluxe. I have owned many different machines over the years and none have impressed me such as this bike does. No, it's not a sport bike. No, it's not your light weight twin cylinder cruiser. What it is, is a V4 with the weight, the torque, the ride, stability and comfort for one or two riders capable of covering serious distance in a day. I am 61 years young, weigh 140 lbs. and am 5'6, and despite my small size can manage this machine quite nicely on all surfaces and riding situations, though my favorite is of course winding rural roads. The bike is happy to give a great ride and performs very well at my preferred range of within 15 kilometers per hour of the posted limit. Alternatively, I have no issue on the highway at cruising speeds between 110 and 130 kilometers per hour. It can do this all day. Just as a side note, I ride with many other bikers, in group outings and the like. I have helped load many a bike onto a truck or trailer because it couldn't finish the ride. Not so for my Royal Star Tour Deluxe!

Best motorcycle I have ever owned. I'm 62 and I have owned 15. I don't get this guy. I mean, really, this bike has saved my life and reinvigorated me. The name is correct, it IS truly a Royal Star Tour Deluxe !!!! Mine is 2006. It is sooooo refined and soooo well engineered. I would take it from one coast to the other (with a passenger) and not blink an eye. Yes, it is big....but so am I at 6ft 4in and 260lbs. It fits me like a glove and the fact that you can take off the wind screen and backrest it under 5 sec. with no tools is just icing on the cake. Even more icing? Well, it is really the cruiser brother of the V-MAX. And that is a great sibling to have. The only thing in regards to motorcycles that would be even better would, in fact, be to have a V-MAX in the carport next to it. But no need really. I am a happy man and will NEVER part with this machine. John from Tampa, Florida. THANKS Yamaha.

I think you missed the mark on this bike. It is what cruising is all about, plus you missed a very important part of this bike's motor. It has history. The Yamaha Venture Royale started it, then the Vmax 1200 took it to a different plane. The Royal Star Venture took over and with all that history, you mention not a word. Shame, but you did mention Hannible and his elephants as if we should all care about your knowledge of history! Bad review on a very good bike. And, yes, I owned one and wish I never sold it.

Saw one for sale today and came looking for a review. Found a video with porn music and had to explain to my wife I wasn't watching porn. 3/10 wouldn't watch again.

Rod wasn't wrong about much usually.Unfortunately he is no longer with us.The video was made with British roads in mind and he ably demonstrated the boards grounding out.At the time, the bike probably was dated but now that's not an issue since the market accommodates every style nowadays. The plate is a 98 so it's obviously not a 2002 as some folk were quick to jump on.Doesn't matter how many reviews he's done at least he was honest in his opinion. He was a big fan of the Fj1200,as am I still,so that's good enough for me.He was unfortunately wrong about the residuals though. The Star costs as much now as it did back then.

I’ll bet you eat your words every day after that review huh. Nowadays the average Royal Star if your fortunate enough to find one is going for more than they paid for it when new. Here in the USA an average cost is @7500bucks for a 98’ and over 20k for a newer one. They took a V 4 and made it look like a big V Twin. I’ve ridden the Royal Star on a long multi day ride and switched with a buddies Road King Harley for the ride back. I couldn’t get the Royal Star back for the entire ride home. Btw, my friend with the Road King, sold his bike for @ $14,500 and bought a barely used 2007 for @$10k with less than 3000 miles on it. It looks like a proper bagger and with a new K&M exhaust sounds even better than the Road King. You see you get all the perks of owning a touring bagger without all the mechanical problems found on most if not ALL Harley Davidsons. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still a huge fan of Harley Davidson and loved my 48’ panhead ex state police bike. HD’s will always be what the world craves let’s face it. But there is not a single bike on the road that compares to the Royal Star for gizmos, speed and comfort. Nothing! Thanks for the video I enjoyed it. ✌🏻🇺🇸

It's not a 2002 'Royal, it's at newest a 1998. The 2002 has the lower leg shields an a lot more power than this version. regardless of that, you really didn't want to like the bike in my opinion. It was designed as a cruiser/tourer for the US market. By the way, the suspension is greatly improved on the 1999 up model. I own the even BIGGGER behemoth the Venture gen2, and a Roadstar XV1600 as a daily rider. Neither have outstanding ground clearance, they are long distance cruisers man, not sports bikes.

Loved mine and wish I still had it. Looking for another one (or 94 CB1000). As for the review ... it was crap.

This review is so focused on negativity, why didn't they just say this bike sucks from the beginning. Sounds like he got a royal payment for shitting on a great bike.

I Love my Royal Star Tour Classic, of course I am 6' 1" and I weight 320 pounds so I need a big bike, and my Royal Star handle well for me too, of course I like to putt at a steady speed and I have no desire to run like a raped ape down the highway either so I guess it sums up to be each be their own in preference to what they like to ride.

I have a 1969 Fiat Convertable on ebay right now. It's been parked for quite some time but everything is there, well most if it. I'm not a mechanic so I don't know what is missing under the hood. I would love to see it go to someone who would appreciate it and make it beautiful again!
