That’s what mine did… under load at around 40-50mph. Flush… change fluid… fixed it. Love the panther content!

Mine started doing that. Old school trans service, filter, fluid, and gasket using motorcraft everything resolved the issue. Can't even feel it shift anymore. Just like I like it.

Great info..great video... With out an advanced scan tool, the DYI little guy operator can tap the brake pedal with his left foot to unlock the converter for 3 seconds to isolate/diagnose, with your right foot still on the gas, during the shuddering fits....If the shuddering goes away--its the converter/trans. If the shuddering speeds up-it is usually an ignition component... 95% of these are fixed by servicing the transmission, drop the pan, new filter, 5 quarts of new Mercon V(2009+ LV), reuse the OEM pan gasket. If it was serviced in the past 20,000 miles- you can add a friction modifier to the transmission fluid($7-$10).... Drop the pan every 45,000 miles to avoid this all. The torque converter drain plug was deleted near the end of the 2002 model year cars on the Panthers. The dash cluster flicker on the 03-05 is simple cold solder joints need re-soldered... easy fix.. but you have to remove the cluster and dismantle it. beautiful 2003!!!

I've had a dirty injector make the vehicle misfire (feel like a shutter) under a load. For instance at a red light ,with your foot on the brake. But ,you obviously nailed the diagnosis. Hopefully you saved the tranny in time.

Oh yeah I remember doing lots of tranny flushes/filters on these, if you hit the OD switch on the column and the shudder stops its usually a sign you need some new fluid! I miss the old ones with a torque converter drain plug! This was back in the days when we had the Star tester...it was shaped like a big T...not many of the old mechanics knew how to use it or even wanted to use it 😆

I remember those days when I worked with the Ford trans engineers. I was and am so afraid when it comes to torque converters with controlled slip for OBDII misfire capabilities. Were the owners going to use tow/haul mode properly or OD properly? Were the owners going to change their spark plugs before misfire? Would they recognize misfire? Would they change their trans fluid? I am even more afraid of counterfeit or so-called "universal" ATF fluids. There is a reason why ZF fluid is $18 and Valvoline "just as good" is 1/3 the price. It ain't the same fluid, not even close. In development I could tell when the ignition system or trans fluid were showing problems, but I am a certified driveability engineer (whatever that means?). My conspiracy theory Uncle would damage his vehicle, because trans fluid changes and ignition maintenance are scams. There ain't no reason for $18 trans fluid. Nooooo! There are reasons for this. He would save $60 and ruin $3k in a trans rebuild and new converter. The days of Dex/Merc fluids are long gone. Sadly, the owner's manuals lie. It is not a lifetime trans fluid, nor are those 100k spark plugs. Here is where I get paranoid. If I take my car or SUV to the dealer or an independent shop, will they use the correct trans fluid, or will they use a "universal" or "just as good" fluid? I have no idea as a customer. My paranoia is justified? I keep ZF, AISIN, Chrysler, Ford, and GM trans fluids in stock at home, so I know exactly what fluid is going in. The 50k trans service on a ZF may be $150, and an AISIN service with SP4 may be half that cost. There is no way I am destroying a trans with a universal fluid from AutoZone or taking my chance at Jiffy Lube.
@FordBossMe
@FordBossMe 2 жыл бұрын
I mean you are justified in your concerns that's for sure some of those Universal fluids come with guarantees so if damage is done because of the fluid and it was installed by a professional shop they will pay for any repairs so the Valvoline Universal stuff is pretty dang good to be honest with you

I'm with you on the fluids, not so much the plugs. I generally run plugs until the mpg's drop off. On my 2004 Chevy Avalanche that didn't happen until 210,000 miles (now at 262k), on my 2006 Town Car I'm right at 125,000 miles original plugs and injectors. I change engine oil and filter ~ every 2,500 miles, service the trans ~ every 25,000 miles (4.5 quarts pan fluid), and trans filter every 75,000 miles. I installed a trans pan from an E450 that has a nice factory drain plug that makes servicing the trans fluid as easy as an engine oil change.

I am not necessarily right, but I am afraid of extended service intervals and generic fluids. I work for OEMs ...and sometimes there are weird reasons for unique fluids. I cringe with the extended service intervals. It is not easy to know when oils need to be changed as an OEM. I have similar fears with ignition parts. Thanks for the smart comments.

@@FordBossMe Have you ever seen anyone sucessfully submit and redeem a claim due to damage caused by a fluid? How could you prove it was the fluid and not a part failure? How could you prove it was the fluid that caused the part to fail? Point is, better to not take chances because they already have 1,001 reasons to deny the claim.

The RWD T-Birds and Cougars in the mid 90s had this issue and it would start around 50-55K miles. I had a 96 Cougar with the 4.6. The torque converter on those transmissions had a drain plug and the housing had an access port where you could manually turn the transmission to get the drain plug aligned, which allowed the torque converter to be drained. That, along with dropping the pan and filter required about 10-11 quarts of Mercon V to refill. The wife's 2017 Escape is making a similar shudder. I was tempted to try a fluid change; however, the transmission tech at my local Ford dealer says it needs a transmission overhaul or replacement. I'm now in wait mode, and don't want to touch the fluid for fear of making things worse.
@Anthonythesider

Transmissions need to have all of the fluid changed. When you change the engine oil you don’t change half and leave half old in there . Also on this car it need the transmission filter changed and pan and magnet cleaned

How much are the updates? I seen on a video of this tool someone commented that if you don't keep it updated you lose Bi-Directional capabilites. Thanks in advance.

I'm having a similar issue with my 03 Town Car, it shutters between 20-45mph. I did clean the mass air flow sensor because it was causing the engine to stall but seems ok now. I'm thinking plugs I should change as well as a trans flush from what you did in this video. I might just change it fully, do not have that machine. Also did you silicone the pan or gasket?

How many graphs can you show at once on your Phoenix Lite 2. I have seen some more expensive ones like the Thinktool ProS show as many as 12 at once. PS Rich a car at 86K miles in my book is not far from new. I have changed my gm fluid in my 4T65E using generic automatic fluid (dex/merc) and have had no problems. Have you had to use factory fluids or have you been able to use generic fluids? Thanks for the video.
