2003 Toyota 4Runner V8 review featuring a 4WD Limited model with nearly 350k miles on it. The Toyota 4Runner got a redesign for the 2003 model year, the 4Runner featured in this video has a V8 engine. See my 1997 4Runner Review with 270k Miles: • 1997 Toyota 4Runner Th...
Every generation of the Toyota 4Runner always looked great to me. It is reassuring to know how well these 4Runner SUVs age with high mileage since they can be picked up for a significant discount from the original MSRP price when new. If you are an owner, please leave your experiences with the 4Runner and any modifications you have done in the comment section below.

One of the best SUVs ever made. The V8 made it totally different than a normal 4Runner. The beastly torque and glass-smooth power delivery have to be experienced to be believed.

Just a testament to Toyota greatness. The chuckle after "if you wanna pick this up" and then "if you wanna buy it" was classic Kevin, and hilarious. I never keep vehicles for as long as that, but if I were inclined to do so, the 4Runner is at the top of that list. Keep em coming. It was Toyota that sent me to Lexus, I just think they are the best, I guess that's fanboy style, if so I accept the crown.

I just got a 2003 4Runner SR5 V8 4wd with 200k on the clock for $1500. Front driveshaft snapped and put a hole in the transfer case. I removed front shaft and drove it around in rear wheel drive, smooth as could be. Dropped the t-case and going to open it up, check for damage/metal, and weld the hole up. I'm going to do the timing belt, new tires, new headlamps, and a few interior trim pieces. It's a really solid machine, excited to bring it back to life!

4Runners are just absolute tanks for eternity~ You can take this 2003 4Runner off road today, and it would still not be a problem for that car. The engine is dead reliable, still very smooth, very nice to drive, this 2003 4Runner still got the looks. I know a lot of people prefer the look of this 4Runner compared to the current one, but all 4Runners look hella badass.

Great review as always man. I am in the market for one. The V8 has a timing belt and the V6 has a chain. Added maintenance cost there to consider every 90k miles. Also, if it breaks, this motor is an interference motor unlike the previous gen motor. Expensive situation :(.
@kftc1980
@kftc1980 Жыл бұрын
That conventional wisdom about timing chains Vs timing belts is a little misleading. How often does the water pump get changed when there is a timing chain instead of a belt? (Hint, after it fails) Do the timing chains last forever? Are they as easy to DIY? Do they not have their own issues that cost money to fix, like bad guides? The V8 will outlive the V6 as long as the timing belt gets done. Also, it is a pretty easy job to do at home with a few special tools that aren’t expensive, you just have to follow all the steps. Toyota doesn’t make things that complicated. If you’re going to drive vehicles that are over 10 years old it makes sense to learn to maintain them yourself.
@nordicpride9708
@nordicpride9708 Жыл бұрын

Apparently the V8 was only offered in the early years so they are highly sought after. Also the only downside to these cars is the X-REAS suspension system. It essentially links both shock absorbers reservoir from one corner to another like an X. Once it starts leaking you have to replace one entire part of the X (there's 2) and it's very expensive. Besides that these cars are supposed to be bulletproof. Good Review!

This '03 = cousin of my '04 GX w/ the same 2UZ-FE + 5speed tranny.. Almost identical color as mine too, but I only got 139K.. These apocalypse machines most definitely coveted & should last another 300+K w/ normal maintenance.. $7G price tag sounds about right hah.. FYI, the 4Runner's X-REAS system is comparable to the GX's KDSS.. Got a friend w/ a '98 4Runner V6 w/ 230K on the clock, still orig. engine + tranny & it just doesn't wanna break..

What do you think of the VW ID>4? I Love It, saw one in the parking lot about a month ago & it's awesome much more impressive viewing it in person! Also The new Corolla Cross is coming out & another awesome vehicle, with gas prices being what they are I think I'm gonna have to go with a more energy efficient crossover/SUV & those two I mentioned seem to check all the boxes...CHEERS!

I'm looking into getting one of these. From what I've read they received an engine update in 2005 that bumped HP by like 30 or so. Anyone have any experience with these and can tell me if the difference in real world use is noticeable or significant? Basically is it worth the extra couple grand that I see them seem to go for.

I am also looking. I believe you're correct on the 05. I remember someone commenting though if you needed to replace the engine, then you're limited to finding a 05 only motor. Also, V8 timing belt and the V6 has a chain so extra maintenance cost for the belt. The V8 is an interference motor. If it breaks then you will need a rebuild.

This has a 4 speed auto. The 5 speed auto didn’t arrive until 2005.the 5 speed auto really helps getting the 4Runner moving from a stop. 1st, 2nd and 3rd subjectively feel like shorter gearing to get up to speed faster.
