April 2023. How to change the transmission fluid on a 2004 Buell Blast 500 single cylinder. You'll need to remove the seat and battery for access to the breather tube, which you'll use to fill the transmission. You'll need a small funnel, a quart of 20W-50 synthetic MOTORCYCLE oil, at least 1 pan to drain oil into, several 12" or greater zip ties, and shop rags. Maybe some kitty litter (or similar) if you're spill prone. If you have a shop manual, it says to pull the left (shifter) side foot peg brace. This is very hard to do. There are 3 threaded studs holding the brace on and the nuts are in the battery compartment and difficult to get at. Thus, this method. The video shows you where the breather tube is and how to get the old oil out and the new oil in. You should be able to do the entire job in an hour using my method, give or take. The video omits starting the Buell after the procedure. I started it and checked for leaks. All good. Please note that the 2004 Buell is a different animal than some other years. Research more for your bike or at least see if all of the parts locations are the same before starting the procedure. If you decide to change the engine oil at the same time, there are 2 tubes running up next to the foot peg brace on the left (shifter) side. Remove the screw holding the clamp that holds both hoses to the frame. There is a plug in each hose, held in by a clamp. Loosen the clamps, pull the plugs, drain the oil. Change filters. Fill the new oil filter with new oil and run a little new oil over the rubber filter gasket, clean the oil filter seat, install the new filter hand tight plus 1/4 turn. No more than that! Heat and vibration will tighten the filter a bit more. PLEASE recycle your used oil! Fill using 1 and a half quarts of good motorcycle oil (I use 20W-50 synthetic, K&N 177 filter). When done, run the engine and check for leaks. Check the oil dipstick after the motor warms up. Fill as needed. Note: I am in NO WAY a professional mechanic. Use these procedures at your own risk. Also, I uploaded a vid on replacing the foot pegs. After Market had to be used since stock are unavailable.

I have a 2009 Buell Blast and you are correct that it is a nightmare to remove the bracket which holds the foot pegs. But if you ever do remove it just use coupling nuts instead of the factory nuts when you re-install the bracket. Coupling nuts are just very long nuts that you can buy at a hardware store or Menards. That way it will always be a breeze to remove the bracket for future maintenance such as clutch adjustment or primary fluid change. The coupling nuts make it very easy to get a wrench on them for removal or installation. In order to get the factory nuts off I used a combination of sockets and flexible extensions and I also removed the battery and it still took forever. I can only assume that Buell/Harley mechanics had a special tool to remove them back in the day. I love the Blast but it is becoming more difficult to find parts as the years go by. I have owned many motorcycles and it is my favorite.

Hey bud! Just picked up one of these, ingenious idea about the breather tube, did it work out?

Yeah. The footpeg bracket is a PITA to deal with. Oil changes are pretty easy, on the upside. Be careful of the footpegs. Break one and they're hard to replace (at least on mine). I did a video on it. Trying Moly in the oil this year. So far, more power and 2 more MPG. Got the additive on Amazon. (Molybdenum.) Good in air cooled engines, not anything with a cat. converter.
