Check my comments on this video for IMPORTANT info, Thanks for watching!
I wanted to share my repair on this 2004 Chevy Malibu power steering, specifically the steering shaft torque sensor (aka steering position sensor). I tried to keep this concise and useful to hopefully help someone out.
Vehicle: 2004 Chevrolet Malibu 3.5L V6
Part: Steering shaft torque sensor (GM 23232310)
I no longer recommend buying this part from Amazon, I've had this exact part bad out of the box from them twice now. I have had good luck with it from RockAuto, but as is the case with parts there is no guarantee they will always be good even new.

Just to answer a couple of questions from comments: Diagnosis for this issue is steering wheel shaking or twitching, loss of power steering, a check engine or service light with message on the radio display for power steering, and a for sure diagnosis is an OBD2 scan showing a torque sensor code. (This scan can be done at an auto parts store) As for calibration, it is necessary if after install the wheel pulls SLIGHTLY by itself to one side. A dealership can definitely fix this issue, and likely any place that advertises alignment repair. HOWEVER if it is pulling hard and whipping the steering wheel around there's I high chance that you got a bad part and need to return it and try again. These cars need a GM Tech 2 tool or better to perform calibration, and ideally it would be on an alignment rack. I recommend a dealership for that.

Thanks for the video...I'm about to do this repair to my 2009 Pontiac G6 this weekend, & this is the most succinct video on this topic I've seen. I've read in several places that some folks actually didn't need to have it calibrated after installing, so I'm hoping that'll hold true for me, but if not, I'll just yank the little power steering fuse & drive it to a shop without power steering, which is how I'm driving it right now anyhow, & have them spend exactly 224 seconds calibrating it for me...hopefully they won't charge me too much for that.

You're welcome, glad you've found the video helpful. It's really not too bad of a job. You're right that it will not always need calibration, I just finished one up myself that worked great out of the box, these sensors can be finicky to say the least.

@Jon's Garage Well, after tracking down a 12" internal snap ring pliers at a local Harbor Freight Tools after already having everything torn apart (the only place I could find that had such a tool in stock so I didn't have to order it online & wait), I got it done this Saturday. I tried removing the hellish retaining ring with my 7" pliers, but this time, 7" wasn't nearly enough. It really is true that you want large snap ring pliers for that mammoth ring, otherwise you're just stuck in the mud & can't get the job done. Once I had the 12" pliers, just $29 at HF, I got the ring off easily on my first try. Now, when I had the new torque sensor installed & the steering wheel back on, it was time to test it before replacing all the trim. I hesitated for a good 10 minutes because I was a scared little B. "Please don't let the steering wheel spin to one side!!" I finally turned the key & no spinning...but did I have power steering?? Yes, yes I did!!! And no calibration! I'm a typical pretend mechanic who hates working on cars, but it feels so great when I'm able to complete a real job like this, restore something as vital as power steering, & save a fat stack in the process. Daddy's happy!!

I have a question is it ok to remove the pin on the sensor before you install it if the notch is not centered and the column will not move due to being unable to remove the sensor housing and motor?

There may be a recall on this. GM fixed my 2005 Malibu steering for free, although I don't really know what they replaced. But if you search you can find a recall on Malibu power steering.

Is this part interchangeable with "SWS109"? O'Reilly's says that "23232310" is NOT compatible with my 2005 Malibu Maxx but SWS109 is. Did they use a different sensor from 2004 to 2005? The part you recommend is quite a bit cheaper.
@jonsgarage2882
@jonsgarage2882 2 жыл бұрын
From what I can tell those 2 part numbers are interchangeable. I am not sure why O'Reilly's would say the 23232310 part won't fit the Maxx, everywhere else I've looked says it will.

After filming the video I took the car to a dealership to have it calibrated, where they said they could not get it to calibrate and that the part was probably bad. So I did it again with another new sensor from a different vendor, (the wheel did not turn all the way this time), took it back to the dealership and it was calibrated no issue. It's a tricky one, the guys at the dealership said they have had the same problem with new sensors as well. Unfortunately I don't have a straight answer for whether it's gonna be a bad part or not, I only know what happened to me.

BE AWARE there are bad parts out there even brand new GM certificated ones. IF after installing, your cars steering wheel is turning all the way to one side there is a good chance you received a bad part, or it was installed incorrectly. Parts get damaged in shipping, pins get pulled when they shouldn't be, etc. Use a reputable seller who will work with you in returning a bad part if you receive one.

I replaced electric power steering motor and torque sensor as soon as I start the engine the wheel turns all the way to the right. Is this a bad part or because it has not been hooked up to a bi directional scan tool and calibrated?
@jonsgarage2882
@jonsgarage2882 2 жыл бұрын
@@juanpla4979 If it's saying that it can't calibrate, then my guess would be a bad part. As long as you pull that little pin after the sensor is fully in place, it shouldn't be that you did something wrong. The bad one I had would also not calibrate once installed, what you're describing sounds exactly like my experience. I returned it and replaced it with a different one that worked great.
