This 15 year old starting motor sometimes did not want to start the car, but when you would tap the starter it worked again so
time to take this thing apart and see what is up,... all look great still
only dirty carbonated old oil, went and clean everything,regreased
and put all back together and tested if it would work again and it did!!

Thank you sir, I have an EF 1.3 carb civic with a loud tick (smacking sound) at the starter. Ive been told it's the solenoid but it sounds mechanical, can these solenoids also be serviced?

You can test if its the solenoid, apply power to it and see if the bendix gear comes out. If its the solenoid you better replace it!

The solenoid does two things; -It kicks the drive gear out. -It connects battery power to the motor.

Why not replace the brushes and the solenoid since you went to the extent of dis assembling the starter and putting it back together just curious. Cause if it was me I would of replace the solenoid and the brushes to extent the life and not have to remove it again from my vehicle when something goes wrong.

Because I tested the solenoid and the brushes where still long enough, the starter just got stuck due to clutch dust and dirt, no need to waste money if not needed. this starter is still working in my 18y old honda and it's still the first one.

Should have replaced the solenoid. The contacts is what wears out, not the paint.

Well, that's not always the case! It was not necessary to replace the solenoid, I have checked them both. Starter still working great after 2 years without any issue!
