Iowa defeated Penn State 6-4 in this classic from 2004. The game was played just days after Kirk Ferentz's father died.

A lot of fans hate games like this. I live for them. Nothing better than a good old fashioned defensive struggle. Another classic. Thanks!

It wasn't great defense. It was terrible. Missed FGs; 3 straight 1 play drives. Just bad.

Check out Penn State at Ohio State 2008, that was a classic defensive struggle. This was a pathetic excuse for football.

What is crazy about the score being 6-4 is that both teams had great field position at times throughout this game and never took advantage of it.

Taking a safety with 8 minutes left up 4 knowing PSU won't drive down and score is a special type of disrespectful

I remember this game. I was ten years old and my dad had it on. I went to a year end soccer party and broke my femur on the trampoline. The best part was I remember Penn State missed a field goal to make it 7-6. That would have been the most ridiculous way to score 7 points .. lol.

One of the oddest wins in Iowa history, but definitely memorable. Robbie Gould has gone on to have a great NFL career, but Hawks were fortunate that this was not his finest game for PSU,

I just love how the play by play announcer, Pam Ward just got completely dismantled by Mike Tomczak after the intentional safety. I don't think her career was ever the same after this game.

PSU's offense was the definition of abysmal that year. Credit the defense for being highly ranked with that terrible offense. Imagine if the team could score just a few touchdowns in 03 and 04...just a few...completely different records. Defense kept EVERY team under 21, and the team still went 4-8. Amazing.
@AltoonaYourPiano9 жыл бұрын
We got to see that with the 2005 team who was one second away from going undefeated and playing in the Rose Bowl. The 4-7 record was from a combination of a bad offense and a really strong schedule that year. I think the 2004 team IMO with the 2014 schedule would have gone 8-4 or even 9-3 with losses coming to Northwestern and Michigan State as well as Michigan and maybe also Maryland, but would have eked out a close win at Illinois, upset Ohio State at home, and likely would be playing in a New Year's bowl. Of course this is pure speculation, but when I watched this Penn State team this year, I got flashbacks of 2003, and we went 6-6 and are going bowling.

PSU would rebound in 05. 11 and 1. if not for that loss to Michigan, they would have went undefeated and maybe would have played Southern California in the Rose Bowl. well besides the 2010 season Penn State was consistent in Joe Pa's last years. Hopefully Kirk can keep it up after last years success.

I'm hoping Penn State can notch that elusive 8th win this year but I don't have a lot of faith that Franklin can get it done. Penn State under Joe Pa rarely got annihilated. In fact the only truly ugly loss I remember was 2000 at the Shoe when Ohio State spanked Penn State 45-6. I think that was the game Adam Talaifero got hurt in.

I always thought Ferentz took the second safety with like 3 minutes left, not 8! Even against 04 Penn State that could easily have backfired, I'm with Pam Ward on this one. I cant believe tomczak & the other guy both agreed with that.
@AltoonaYourPiano9 жыл бұрын
It's because Iowa was afraid that Penn State would block Iowa's punt and score an easy touchdown to go up 9-6 and win, and for good reason, too. Penn State in 2004 was infamous for blocking lots of punts, but the Penn State offense that year was bad, almost as bad as this year's, and a safety kick is almost like a kickoff, meaning it flipped field position. Ferentz made the right call.
@bobross15508 жыл бұрын
This is not my first rodeo. I understand why they did it, and it turns out they were right, just surprised they did it so early. Oh well, here's to nostalgia. JoePa and PSU were on the cusp of returning to semi-mediocrity and still rooted for.
