In this video, I noticed that there was a bit of crankcase pressure on this supercharged MINI Cooper. I performed Robert DIY's rubber glove test (a well-known test in the Volvo community) and found that the pressure was enough to inflate the glove on this engine. This is not a good situation to have, as this could cause the engine's seals to leak, or worse - blow out.
Fortunately, the PCV system on this MINI is pretty straightforward, unlike white block Volvos. I found that the PCV valve was clogged, meaning it would not flow air in either direction. The two hoses in the PCV system were clear/clean.
After replacing the PCV valve, the engine passed the rubber glove test!
Tools used: 1/4-drive ratchet, universal, 8mm socket, 3" extension, rubber glove.
This is the procedure on 2002-2004 MINI Cooper and Cooper S. There was a change mid-year 2004 to the valve cover - the PCV valve on 2004.5-2006 screws directly into the valve cover.

Thanks for the video, like others I never knew this was a problem until I saw your video! It's worth mentionning that the cause could also be bad valve steam seals, which you should be able to test with an exhaust gas tester.

I recently went to replace the PCV on my 04 MCS, unfortunately the head of the bolt snapped off. If any of you get resistance when trying to take it off...spray with WD-40 or something and let it sit so this doesn't happen to you. The bolt was rusted and fused to the brass collar on the PCV. Anyhow had to take the valve cover off to get it out...so changed out the valve cover gasket and spark plug tube gaskets as well....just thought I'd throw that out there because it's such a tight spot you have to remove the valve cover to drill out the bolt...

Hi! Thanks for the video. I'm experiencing the same issue with my 2009 R56 N14. I wonder if there's a fix aside from replacing the entire crankcase cover... I also wonder if anyone tried tapping a hole to fit a universal PCV and just plugging the OEM hole. Is this even possible?
@AKJeeper
@AKJeeper 6 жыл бұрын
I haven't had a R56 in the shop in a while. Not many of them in my town, so I can't comment on whether you could tap into the cover and put in a 'normal' PCV. I do know that some folks have plugged off the factory PCV connections in the cover (and intake manifold) and have re-routed the PCV lines into an oil catch can. Not something that would pass a visual inspection if you have emissions testing in your area.

Would a faulty PCV value cause oil to be expelled from the exhaust? The oil light comes on intermittently, then after a short while it illuminates and stays on. I have been putting oil in say every 2,3 weeks. Its certainly burning oil because I've not noticed any oil patches on the drive! I'm praying it could be this and not piston rings or cylinder walls!

@AKJeeper

For this car, it was a sudden increase in oil consumption. I've seen other MINIs where a stuck PCV valve caused leaks in the engine seals such as the valve cover or oil pan. Cheap insurance to replace the PCV valve periodically.

+StatesStyle I've had other vehicles like my 2006 Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi end up burning oil due to a faulty PCV valve. I've also had engines get kind of picky with engine oil too. My R53 drinks Mobil 1 like it's going out of style. Burned over a quart in 5000 miles. I switched to Castrol Edge European Formula 0w40 (says made in Germany on the bottle) and the oil usage has stopped. What kind of oil are you running in your R53? Might be worth it to try replacing the PCV (cheap and easy) as well as the type of oil you're using.

I tried both Mobil1 5w-30 Extended Performance, and Mobil1 0w-40 European Car formula. The car didn't burn nearly as much using the 0w-40 European Car formula (about 1/2 quart in 5000 miles). Still not quite as well as Castrol Edge European Formula 0w40 (no detectable oil usage at 5000 miles).

@AKJeeper
@AKJeeper 7 жыл бұрын
I am of the opinion that synthetic motor oils available in Europe are generally superior to those marketed in the USA. Mobil 1 (and other brands) have a rather confusing lineup of oil here in the US. I have not looked at their offerings in Europe, though. Some key things I look for when "oil shopping": Must be a synthetic oil. Prefer to have it meet BMW LL-01 specs, and/or ACEA-A3. 5w30/5w40/0w40 grade oil. Most all of the oils here in the US that are marketed as "European Car Formula" or similar will meet BMW LL-01 specs AND ACEA-A3. This information should be on the back of the oil bottles. In the case of Castrol, the "European Car" variant of their oil sold in the US also happens to be made in Germany.

Visual inspection with the PCV removed from the hose. There were no blockages. I also tried blowing through the old PCV. It should allow airflow in one direction, but stop it from the other direction. The old PCV valve did not allow for any air flow in either direction. You can hear me testing the new valve at 2:04.

Great info, AJ. Weird question. My 04 dies sometimes while driving for no reason. Have replaced fuel filter and fuel pump and both seem fine-. All I have to do to get it to start again is to take off the gas cap for a minute, replace, it starts right up. Someone suggested that maybe a bad pcv valve was causing a pressure problem that was relieved by the removal of the gas cap? Possible? Or a strange tale? Cheers, RKL
@AKJeeper
@AKJeeper 4 жыл бұрын
Interesting one - but one I've seen a few times before. When you release the gas cap after the car has stalled out, do you hear a sudden rush of air going back into the fuel tank, a whooshing noise? A few things in the EVAP system would generally cause that - canister purge solenoid (located inside engine compartment, MINI calls it a fuel tank breather valve for some reason), dust filter (near the leak detection pump), leak detection pump, and charcoal canister (these last three are underneath near the fuel tank). This sounds like something I should make a video on sometime...
@AKJeeper
@AKJeeper 4 жыл бұрын
I forgot to mention - the PCV system is separate of the fuel tank/EVAP emissions system. PCV is really quite simple, it redirects crankcase fumes back into the intake manifold. A fault with the PCV system will not create a pressure problem in the tank. But as I mentioned in my previous reply, a problem in the EVAP emissions system can cause pressure (or vacuum) problems in the fuel system.

@@richardlawless3989 - Take the PCV out as a test, the Engine will adjust itself during idling. Once it adjust and no shutdown, you know that thing is bad. I have cut the PCV out before and the Engine will adjust accordingly. You may loose a bit of vacuum, but a good way to make the diagnostic. Also, you can add an Oil Catch Can to it. This will prevent future problems with the PCV, because the Oil Catch Can becomes your PCV Valve.

I noticed the old one still rattled a bit, did it still allow some flow through?
@AKJeeper
@AKJeeper 7 жыл бұрын
Warwick Dean The rattle test isn't necessarily the most accurate test for a PCV valve. They often have a spring which allows a calibrated amount of vacuum to pass through. Sometimes these springs break or get weak, and you may hear these pieces rattling instead of the ball or valve inside. These items may actually be stuck and you are getting a false reading if the spring or whatever is what's rattling and not the ball or valve. The glove test is an easy and more effective way to test if your PCV system is functioning.

Is it just as easy to replace on a mini Cooper r56?
@AKJeeper
@AKJeeper 6 жыл бұрын
No. Unfortunately on the R56 - the PCV valve is built into the valve cover. It is not a serviceable item like it is on the R50/52/53 engines. If you are having a problem with the PCV on a R56 model, it requires replacement of the entire valve cover.

Check for restrictions in the PCV hose as well as the crankcase ventilation hose on the other side of the valve cover. If those are clear (and the ports in the valve cover are clear also), I'd say you're starting to see signs of excessive blowby past your cylinders.

Hey AKJeeper, thanks for the vid. I knew my PCV was bad on my facelift 2004 cooper s, replaced it and still notice a large amount of positive pressure even with the new PCV valve. Any ideas in your experience that could be causing this? Maybe worn valves or well worn rings? Might a leak down test be the most suitable to diagnose the condition of the rings and valves. Any input would be really appreciated. Thanks again for the vid!
@AKJeeper

Tyler Duncan Assuming all is well with the PCV valve and crankcase breather hoses, excessive pressure is an indication of blow by due to worn cylinders/pistons/piston rings. How many miles on the car?

The BMW/MINI part number is 11151524087 for R53 models (11157510750 for R50 models). This is for the entire plastic tube/rubber hose assembly. I do not believe the rubber bit is available by itself, at least not as a genuine MINI replacement part. You may want to try looking at a breaker's yard, or perhaps buy a section of oil-safe rubber hose that has the same inside diameter as the original hose. www.fcpeuro.com/products/mini-vent-hose-11151524087 www.fcpeuro.com/products/mini-vent-hose-11157510750

@AKJeeper
@AKJeeper 7 жыл бұрын
Does your engine burn an excessive amount of oil between oil changes? On the 2007 (except Cabrio models), the PCV is built into the valve cover. A couple of other symptoms: excessive pressure or excessive vacuum when the engine is running. Try removing the oil filler cap when the engine is running. Does it seem to have a lot of vacuum (sucking the oil cap), or does it blow the oil cap off when it is unscrewed?
@Alexin07

AKJeeper Already did the test you said and the result was: Removing the oil filler cap I found or feel a lot of vacuum putting my hand over it. My hose that goes to the intake manifold and throttle body had oil. Any comments? Thank you!
@AKJeeper
@AKJeeper 7 жыл бұрын
It is normal to have a small amount of oil in the intake hose on the R56 cars. If there's a lot of oil - I'd suggest replacing the valve cover (PCV is integrated on these valve covers). There is actually a TSB (technical service bulletin) which involves installing an updated valve cover on earlier R56 cars. Aside from that, how many miles are on the engine? Have you done a compression test? And how much oil does the engine consume between oil changes?

hi I have an 09' S' and while running my oil cap is a but of a challenge to remive. when the car stops I hear an air suckling sound for about 15 seconds. I purchased a new valve cover gasket and I don't see any cracks on the surface. is there anyway to get some carb cleaner in the PCV to clean it while I have the cover off ?
@AKJeeper
@AKJeeper 7 жыл бұрын
There is a TSB out for the earlier R56 cars, involving an updated valve cover. They redesigned the built-in PCV system, to address oil consumption concerns. I don't work on too many R56 and later MINIs. I believe the TSB number is: SIM 11 01 07. I was in a hurry when I did my last R56 valve cover, so I didn't get a chance to film it or take pictures. You could try cleaning out the PCV passages once you get the valve cover off, but I'd really look into replacing the entire valve cover - it was redesigned and incorporates a pressure relief valve. From what I remember, there's not a whole lot you can 'see'...not sure how effective you would be at cleaning the passages out.

@AKJeeper

Hilary Morrissey the pcv valve on cars built after 7/2004 are of a different design. The valve itself screws into the valve cover. There is no separate hold down screw like the car in the video has. I forget what size wrench you need for the later pcv valve, I want to say 19mm but I'll have to verify on the next one that comes in.

Hello . I have some questions I want to ask you about my own car. I would really appreciate if you help. I changed the crankshaft of my car.but after I changed the crankshaft, I realized that many errors occurred in my vehicle unrelated to the problem. There was no problem after the car was built, but there was only a small misfire. and after connecting the vehicle to the device, it was understood that there was an error in the 3rd cylinder. When I lifted the rocker cover, we realized that one side of the spring belonging to the 3rd cylinder was protruding. and after we fixed this problem, we started the tool. but many irrelevant 10 -12 errors appeared in my vehicle as =(knock sensor-abs - throttle lower limit could not be determined- turbo pressure regulator error-ECS-high emission ) but none of these errors have anything to do with the repair done. the fault light is on every time my car is started now.and my car do not eats gas almost too hard What do you think could be the reason? I would be glad if you help me.
