***** shaq's defense was crap the entire series. sure kobe shot poorly but if kobe hadnt of hit that 3 in game 2 this would have been a sweep. hate it when people blame only kobe for the laker finals collapse in 04

I would concur. Pistons shut us down and that team was in the playoffs year after year until Sheed and Billups left

This shocked the he'll out of me, too. I say this as a Pistons fan who attended Games 3 and 5. I honestly thought I would be seeing THE LAKERS hoisting the Larry O'Brien Trophy at The Palace. When LA won Game 2, I felt it was going to be like the Sixers series in 2001. After Game 3, I then thought the series could go 7. When the 3rd Quarter of Game 5 happened, I knew that was it. Shaq played a hell of a series, Kobe played hard but missed key shots, and the Pistons were relentless the entire series. If the Lakers win Game 4 (they were in it the whole time, until the last few minutes of the 4th), the series could have been way different. Side note: the Lakers' home crowds in these games were very subdued, unlike in 2000 when they were going NUTS during the playoffs.

As a Pistons fan, this series shocked the Hell out of me. I had absolutely NO idea this was going to happen. I have always loved Shaq and Kobe, though. I was thrilled just to be able to attend games 3 and 5 on the NBA Finals, thinking, "at least I would see the Lakers win 4 games and clinch live". Little did I know it would basically be the other way around. I think what might have happened as the Lakers played just well enough to win in the Western Conference playoffs (especially against SA and Minnesota, which, if I'm correct, had home court). When they played Detroit, the Pistons seemed like they wanted it more. The lakers' best games were #2 (especially at the end and OT) and #4 where Shaq effectively accounted for half of the Lakers' total points and rebounds. Yeah Shaq is huge, strong, and one of the best ever to play the Center position. However, he is human and possibly got worn down towards the end of that contest. L.A. also came out hot in Game 5 and hung in there for a while in the 1st half, but the Pistons went off... The whole thing was shocking to me.

Billups, Hamilton, Prince, & Two Wallaces in Pistons are the 💣. Payton once champion and his son now champion, K. Malone 2 MVP, RIP with Heart & Pride to 5 Champ Kobe always GOAT, & Shaq one & only Superman as champion with 3 titles in LA, & 1 more for Miami.

Bad timing for the lakers since those 04 Pistons may have had some of the best defensive #s since the 80s. I remember they were keeping opponents in the 70s throughout much of the playoffs. Scoring 90 on em was an accomplishment

I know Kobe and Shaq were pretty much in their prime during this time, but can you imagine if Malone and Payton were too. There was so much talent on that team it's redick.

For Kobe though, this was easily his worst season of his prime years (2002-2010). And everything that could go wrong for the Lakers went wrong this season, from the court case having a huge effect on Kobe to Kobe, Shaq & Phil hating each other in the locker room. It was chaos.

It was amazing how this series had Detroit playing at home in 3 straight games in games 3, 4 and 5 even though the Lakers had home court advantage which it seems they switched the series that year but now they don't play like that no more, they split it 2-2-1-1-1 now.......not taking nothing from Detroit even though they had a hell of a squad that year too

Lawrence Tanter IS a legend in my opinion; his 'laid-back' baritone style fits perfectly into the atmosphere of the Lakers/southern California Valley setting. As a Pistons fan who LOVES Mason's style, Tanter brings a classy style to the Public Address mic in his own right.
