Replacing the intake manifold gasket on a 2004 Toyota Corolla. Trying to clear an on-going intermittent P0133 error that occurs after a cold soak. Recently also got a P0171 (Too lean) error which lead me to a TSB (Technical service bulletin) EG045-07 which says that the original Toyota gasket frequently fails.
As a result the old black gasket has been replaced by a new black gasket. Unfortunately the old black gaskets are still on sale on ebay and Amazon (don’t ask how I know this). Get the new gasket.

New 17171-22060 (orange)
After driving for a few weeks, including cold starts, this does seem to have fixed the problem.

I replaced my intake manifold gasket by unbolting the intake manifold and using a pick I was able to get the old gasket out and I was able to work the new gasket in the grooves of the intake manifold. Bolted it all back together and didn't have to disconnect any hoses or cables to throttlebody. Did the job within an hour and my fuel trims immediately reduced but I think I still have another issue causing my lean condition as the code returned once months later.

I just changed mine with the orange gasket in my 2005 Corolla. Cleared the code but it came back….the search continues

@@johnbriggs7514 changed multiple parts including all hoses connected to the intake, cleaned fuel injectors (using CRC throttle body cleaner can a vacuum line cap with tiny hole drilled in it and 9v battery), installed new O2sensor and new fuel pump. I finally went back to the MAF…changed it and it problem is completely fixed. Car drives great and no codes. Got the MAF sensor for $39 from 1A Auto. Also fuel entire fuel pump assembly for $85. Im new to this car repair stuff and saw multiple videos saying they way to check MAF sensor is to unplug while engine is running if engine shuts off then MAF sensor is good. I can tell you for certain this “test” is not full proof. My problem was 100% faulty MAF sensor. I even took the car to 2 separate mechanics and neither one suspected bad MAF sensor. I’m just glad it’s all good now!

Did the manifold gasket fix the problem with your car I have a 03 vibe when cold out car engine will skip on cold start up

Yes it fixed the problem in the cold weather.

thank you very much. I had a similar problem with my 2004 corolla and they replace the oxygen sensor first. Then the P0171 code came up about a month later and I took it to another mechanic. They replaced the manifold gasket like you did. I am not knowledgeable about cars, but can you tell me if there is any concern when something like this happens that it is leading to more severe problems I can anticipate or avoid with the engine? If I understand your question, you are wondering if the bad gasket created damage to the engine. The answer is no. All the car was doing was sucking in air from a different place and it caused confusion in the car's computer. No harm to the engine.

Yes, it fixed the 133 code. The old gasket was really bad. I hope you can resolve the error.

what if i try to get codes but cannot Like the OBD 2 scanner works but the vehicle wont give any codes? Can you still get codes if you disconnect both terminals from the battery? If so how can you bypass that?

If there are currently no codes, but there has been in the past, you will need to drive the car in stop and go traffic for a while for the Evap test to be run. On my OBD scanner there is a "EVAP" indicator to show whether or not the test has been run. Flashing means it has not been run, solid means it has been run.

It seems, that 17171-22060 is replaced by 17171-0D030. On japan-parts.eu is this number listed, when I type ...22060. Has Toyota released a new black gasket for this problem? Thanks in advance. I have a Toyota Avensis with a 1.8 1ZZ-FE engine, so I think this the fix works in 99% for me. I am excited about the result, when temperatures will be lower (actually 15°C) in Germany.

Dear Peter, Weirdly The Toyota website is still showing 17171-0D020. parts.toyota.com/p/Toyota_2004_Corolla-CE-SEDAN-18L-MT/Engine-Intake-Manifold-Gasket/63186035/171710D020.html The 0D030 part number does exist for some reason. toyota-europe.epc-data.com/corolla/zze120l/1770/engine/1701/17177/ But I'm not clear on what the difference is. Sorry but after spending a few minutes on this, I really couldn't get to the bottom of it. Might be worth asking at the dealer parts department.

I think there are severeal part numbers for the european and US market. So the 22060 is not provided for the EU market. The old number for EU is 17171-22030 and the replacement number 0D030. Like you show in the video the side profile of the gasket is exactly the same (old and new).
