tools required: 13 mm socket, ratchet, 8 mm or 5/16" 6 point wrench, drain pan, pick or small screw driver & tools necessary to lift vehicle & remove wheels & brake drum

Wow, thanks for taking the time to explain all this. This type of work was always outside my wheel house so to speak. I deal more with engine performance issues. You'd be surprised how hard it is to find good info about Colorados/Hummer H3s.

Hey Daryl I’m in the middle of this and I just need a quick explanation of how to put the keeper bolts back to allow that pin through. Did you have a video for that? Thanks.

I am not sure what you are asking. There is only 1 pin & 1 retainer bolt (5/16" hex head). If the axles rotated just a bit with that pin out, the side gears will move out of their place.. the pin will either miss the holes in the gears completely or block the pin from going in. If that's what you mean, simply gently rotate one of the axles,.. pick a direction & monitor the side gear position. If it goes further away from position, reverse the rotation. You might be able to insert a screw driver in the hole, catching the side gear and with a prying action, rotate the gears into place. Take note: there is a thrust washer that is bowl-shaped behind both side gears.. make sure they didn't fall out. If the gear position wasn't too far off, I don't think the washer can fall out since it has somewhat of a sleeve to center it behind the gear.

Great video! Last year I replaced my front hub bearings on my 4WD Canyon because I heard bearing starting to go bad. After new bearings ,I still heard bearing like noise at different speeds ,mostly around 45 mph! Now I am getting a slight grinding noise ,left rear wheel! Not all the time though! I.put truck on lift and ran it ,can definitely hear some bearing noise ,but no play in axle . You mentioned axle saver bearing ,one piece with seal .Does it install without any modifications ,just taps into axle housing like a traditional bearing would? I m just trying to do what's best in the long run! I have changed axle bearing and seal in a half ton Chevy in the early 1980 ' s. At night in a gravel parking lot using drag light! So I am pretty sure I can get this done .Lol! Just wanted to see if you think regular bearing and seal would be fine ,or one piece axle saver style would be better ! Thanks for your input!

the axle saver bearing goes in just like an OEM style bearing. There are no modifications needed whatsoever

Thanks for the input ! Do you think the axle saver unit is worth the extra money ,I haul a trailer with firewood regularly . Both bearings are still oil lubed from the rear end pumpkin grease ,correct ? I assume it's not a permanently greased bearing !
