Great video. Three months ago I had a Freightliner dump truck that had a check engine light,derate mood problem and like eight codes for no communication to bcm, after treatment codes, Def codes, etc. So I kept looking at this no communication codes. Well I checked my fuses and they were all good with a test light. Except one the little leg of the fuse was black. I was like ok. I put a new fuse in the fuse block and the screen on the laptop glinched. All my codes went inactive. They start as active. Once the fuse was replaced. They went inactive. Started the truck up ran great and cleared the warning lights on the dash. But this fuse showed good with a test light and a dvom. The black corroded color is what caught my eye.

The old "NO POWAH" problem. I have seen fuses that were cracked inside and when you poke them they make contact again. Nice job, Keith.

kieth is on the short bus today !!!! dont eat the crayons or lick the windows lol good thing to know ive had salt swell the aluminum on those cheap assed fuses up and it spreads the socket then when you clean or replace it you get a bad connection

Thank you for this video. I have a 2003 Express 3500 6.0 liter and have spent two days looking at battery cables, negative ground strap from engine to frame, replaced JCA 40 amp fuses, all fuses mentioning anything to do with ignition, the 125 amp mega fuse. I have new battery cables coming from Rock Auto. Tomorrow I was gonna start looking at the ignition switch, but 1st I'm gonna check fuse #46 TBC ACC (10 amp). I hope that's it. Great video! I had a main 30A fuse in a zero-turn mower once that caused complete power loss, as if the battery was dead. The guy had a habit of leaving the unit outside in the rain a few times, and none of these things are designed water tight. The fuse terminal got a little of the green crusties, built up some sky-high resistance, and fried the fuse and holder to a crisp! She got HOT. Only by removing the fuse could I see that one leg was black, and the green plastic melted, which I presume melted the wire inside right at the leg, behind the charred plastic where it was impossible to see, breaking the connection. That was an easy fix - I just happened to start my diag right there. Literally 5 minutes diag'ed and out the door, and onto the next one. Nothing like an avian bombing while you're working! 😂 Nice work dodging them. 😁

I've seen fuses look good, and physically check out good (& by ohming), but due to oxidation on the tabs, they would not make a good contact in their slot in the fuse block.

@NewLevelAuto5 жыл бұрын
It would have shown nothing using a voltmeter 🙄. Voltage would show 12v and 12v . The problem is near the base of the fuse .

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing, Keith. How on earth does a fuse box cover just disappear!?
@damkayaker3 жыл бұрын
Chevy installed that fuse box right next to the PCM (which gets water dripped directly from above where the hood meets the fender when it rains) on the inner fender wall so they could save wire. Then they ran a bunch of stuff over the cover of the fuse box making it very difficult to remove. Somebody probably broke it or cut themselves in the process. It was then chucked in the can. My cover is held on with zip ties. GM is crap now.

That's not a fuse box, that's a greenhouse! I've been bitten by a "good" bad fuse before. I don't even know their designation at this point, but remember those weird ceramic fuses Mercedes used in the 80s, with exposed tin elements? Sometimes touching a test light to the spring clip that holds 'em in is enough to regain continuity...
