this is what my truck does in the morning. It has been cold, but taking it to dealer Wednesday. Have seen 10 different solutions to the cold start issue. From alternator and batteries to injector O-rings to just a simple re-flash. I am having a block heater cord installed on Wednesday also. The truck runs perfectly if you let it warm up to normal operating temp, but if you try to drive off right after startup, it has very little power and trouble changing gears until warmed up. I just drove it 180 miles to greenville and back, pulling a 25 ft travel trailer @4000 lbs and it ran perfectly all the way there and back! No problems at all after warm.. thoughts? I hope the dealer figures it out quick and at a reasonable price!

Your truck has bad injectors, and possibly a High pressure oil leak at the STC fitting on the HPOP. FWIW I used to start my 6.0 when it was -15 F outside, and it always started without much of a miss. Then again, I work on these all the time so I know when mine had bad injectors. Also, when it gets cold, I would recommend running Rotella 5w-40 synthetic. It aids tremendously in cold start situations.

@Tleffew1 If you have a leak at the HPOP, your truck will be hard to start warm. Over time, it won't want to start at all. It will appear that the HPOP is failing, but it is probably leaking HP oil at this fitting, or on the rails themselves. I know you don't have this issue, but I just recommend that if you ever have to tear the engine down to replace the fitting, change the pump while you're in there! Especially if you have over 120k miles. Check the IPR screen for metal next injector change.

Ok, this is coming from a Minnesota guy with a 6.0 your truck is just fine. this is what happens to trucks whos owners dont use block heaters. simple as that. your injectors are just fine. last night it was -30 and my plug in for the block heater broke the week before. it took me an hour to get it going. when it starts this cold it will run like shit until the engine gets to operational temps. it wont shift correctly or nothing until then. dont worry, your fine. get a block heater.

The clunk when the transmission shifts may be your slip yoke telling you it needs some grease. Be sure and block all four wheels and put on the parking brake when removing the drive shaft...grease the part the part where the driveshaft goes into the transmission...

Had the same problem with my 2004 6.0. It was the FICM ( fuel injection control module). Found a place on eBay that rebuilds them for 62 bucks. There's youtubes on how to test if yours is bad. There's also videos on how to install them. Good luck brother.

6.0's and 7.3's both were hard starts under real cold temperatures. Both use HEUI systems and the viscosity of the oil impacts injection. As another poster said this is called stiction. The valve that lets high pressure oil into the injector sticks due to viscosity and quality of your oil. The FICM has been updated several times with new strategies to free up sticking spool valves. It's possible a reprogram of the FICM and putting some miles on the truck will help fix it.

using a head bolt heater should make it start fine. and if it takes a while to start up even if it isn't cold then its probably the injectors or just the starter.

@Tleffew1 Sorry to hear about you having other bad injectors. Unfortunately on a 6.0, that's the nature of the beast. Once you lose an Injector, the others typically aren'r far behind. The other thing that fails on these engines, are the HPOP's (High pressure oil pump). They go bad internally over time, but on 2005 MY trucks especially, they fail right at the STC fitting. To get to it, you have to take the top end of the motor apart. Intake, turbo, Oil/ FF reservoirs, EGR cooler, etc..

Your truck is doing EXACTLY what my '05 6.0 is doing right now. When it first starts it sounds like the rods are about to come thru the hood.My diesel mechanic diagnosed it as the FICM. I'm pretty sure it's not the EGR, or injectors as I did the EGR delete almost a year ago.My mechanic said my batteries were about toast and if I installed 2 new batteries it could possibly help it did for a few weeks..my mechanic also said if I added a block heater will extend the FICM

The Ford dealer is gonna wanna replace the injectors. Do yourself a favor and run some Hot Shot Secret or Rev-X in your oil for a 1000 miles, then change your oil to a 10w-30w below 30 deg.F. It'll clean the sticky oil side of them injectors right up.

@timothys3590
@timothys3590 8 жыл бұрын
+Tleffew1 For me, the Hot Shot's Oil treatment worked the best. It de-varnished the sticky injectors. You gotta run her hard for a while... but you'll know it's working when you cold start it and you see black flakes out the exhaust on startup. It crystallizes carbon and throws it out exhaust. The other HUGE factor was dropping oil viscosity to 10w-30w Rottella T5. Ford rcommends you drop vicosity to 10w-30w in 30F degree or colder ambient temperatures.

Diesels run on compression instead of spark and that is why they have such a hard time cold starting. Install a block heater if it does not come with one stock it should) and plug it in every time you park it and you should be all set unless something else is wrong. do not let the dealer jip you into spending more money when you do not need to. I am a diesel mechanic and have been doing this my entire life, all you need is a block heater.

I remember when I had my 7.3 dealing with injectors smoking and hard starts. And that's the best to ever come out of navistar for the light duty market. But after two fords I finally wised up and just bought a 5.9. Doesn't smoke or chug for a second fire right up and injectors last more than 200k miles like they should.

Your injectors , 2 or 3 of them , are working intermediatly (when they want} probably due to low fuel service pressure. (less than 55 lbs) Replace your service pump, which is part of your water seperater . Start draining your filter regularly.

I sense a bad FICM. You're begging for problems if you drive this down the road while it's still really cold. I'm overly fanatical with my 6.0, I don't even move my van until oil temps have reached 120+ degrees Fahrenheit. Even then, I take it pretty easy until my oil temps are above 160. I thought all 6.0's came with block heaters, even my 6.0 van has a factory block heater. If you still have this truck, get a Scangauge II. They are a necessity for monitoring temps, figuring deltas, boost pressure, etc. They help you diagnose issues quite easily.

First off I hope you aren't running 15w-40. *Assuming all 8 of your glow plugs are good and they are being energized... Just because the glow plug light goes out doesn't mean they aren't still running. Turn the key to the on position, wait 30, 45 seconds, hell a minute if you have to. It pains me to see people cycling the key after only 5-10 seconds. If you're still having the problem, I'd look into a stiction problem which can be remedied with a good additive such as Archoil. If you're still having problems I'd test the FICM.
