Thanks EXTREMELY much for the detailed breakdown of each & combined pickup settings and the boosting of the Active Preamp on the older American Deluxe Precision V 5-string. I'm very much NOT a P-Bass Guy, but the 1st Generation of the Deluxe/American Deluxe Precision Bass (just "Dlx" from '95-'99, "Am Dlx" from '00-'08) called out to me with its Dual Coil Bridge Humbucker that allow the Jazz Bass-type mids that I crave to be dialed into a 5-string P-Bass. I even found my "Dream" version of it virtually unused: a 2000 5-string with Maple Fretboard and 5-Inline Headstock (they switched to your 4/1 in 2001 or 02) with Ash Body in Crimson Transparent. Unfortunately it was literally 2 days after a move to Dr Better-Half's new job, and had absolutely no Extra Bass Ca$h after moving costs (it was gone in under a week as well... :-( ) However, I had a "spare" Spector ReBop5 Dlx FM (aka Spector's "Euro Bolt-On" model) that I hadn't modded to my custom Pickup & Preamp specs, and used that to try and make my "homemade" version of the Am Dlx P5. Namely, swapping out the stock Pups for EMGs "40P5" & "40DC" (their 5-string Precision and Dual Coil Pickups set in their 5-string "40" Soapbar-Sized housings that the bass was already routed for. Along with an Aguilar OBP-3SK/PP 3-band Active Preamp, this setup gave me a *VERY* close approximation of Fender's 5-string Precision & Dual Coil Humbucker sounds and your Tone Examples in the video (Great job on that, by the way!!) The farthest off I am is with the EMG's inherent "SuperClean" Activeness - I'm not an Active EMG guy as well & am continuously looking for a Pickup Builder that can make Passive 5-string P and DC pups but in the EMG-sized shells, but the bolt-on body and woods used help bring me far closer than if I were using the more common Neck-Thru Spector, and if I can find a Passive Soapbar builder I'll stop looking for my "Dream" Fender American Deluxe Precision V as I'll have essentially have 95% of the tone without the hyper-inflated costs they now sell for on the Used Market. Again, thanks for the great tonal examples!

Hey there Scarred2112 , Wow! I'm blown away by this post and your commitment to getting the tone that you want. That is so cool! Thanks a bunch for posting this. I hope people will read this. Even if they don't know what all the details mean, it's just inspiring to see someone so focused on achieving something. Thanks again Scarred2112 for the post! It made my day and thank you for the compliments as well. Cheers!!! Trinidad

Well, i actually have this bass for 7 years and used it extensively to a lot of style, but most particularly rock/metal. It really does fit really well, the big advantage is the the built in preamp gives it a lot of versatility : you can set the sound to be really what you want. For Rock, it ll really sound great. Great video by the way ! The video sound is quite respectful of the sound you'd have live !

I just bought a sunburst 2005. The mid freq pickup is designed to compensate for the fact that the traditional split P Bass pickups are wired out of phase for noise cancelling but they also give phase cancellation. So the P Bass has mid frequencies scooped out. The mid pot allows you to dial them back in. Personally, I bought a P Bass for that out of phase sound but having been a Jazz Bass player for many years I still want to be able to get something close to that sound as well, so dialing in just a little mid with both front and back pickups on does the trick. But mostly I think I will use it as a straight P Bass. Haven't gigged with it yet and I have month of gigs coming up playing with different acts doing very different styles so I think this bass will give me the scope I need

yes ! in fact i tried this bass first in a shop ! it was a rosewood model ! it sounded great to my ears ! and i bought a used model by internet , with a mapple neck ! too much aigues, too much low frequencies to be precise ! result : 4 months later, solded !! next bass i'll buy will be a precision vintage 58 ! 4 strings ! and a stringray 5 !! that's it ! i already owe a g&l L2000 ! fantastic bass for everything !!

Hey Roland, I was pretty sure I answered your comment/question, but I don't see my answer here. What I recommend is going to eBay and looking under "completed sales" and find an ad there or in the sale section for that matter. You can find info in those description there, usually. Other than that, it can be a little difficult. Thanks!

Hi Horatiu. I haven't watched the video in a while. Did I say that I was scooping the mids on the bass? I don't know if I've ever used it that way because I typically don't find that tone useful. I know on some of the examples I boosted the treble and bass all the way. I wonder if that's what you're hearing. Thanks for the comment. Cheers!

Lovely midrange tone on this bass, especially on the bridge pickup. Too bad you're losing all your volume when you try to scoop the mids. Can't you compensate by boosting the bass and treble? All in all, great sounding bass. Congrats.

hi, could you suggest me a setup for a musicman sound ? i mean: good presence, peak of the high frequencies to the touch with some medium frequencies that i don't know to increase, that is a general sound of croaking/scratching but with the presence of bass and a extreme clarity and brilliance - (an example is the sound of Jeff Caxidy of ISIS band).

Hi. I don't remember the gauge. I typically use a medium size on my basses. HOWEVER, I had tapered strings on for a while and they just didn't seem to work well at all. There was weird resonances that I kept having problems with. Because strings are so expensive, it was hard to experiment with gauges and manufactures.

@eimidioskouroi 6 жыл бұрын
Funny you should ask. I tried the Schecter Diamond P5's a while back. They all felt really good to play and sounded great. I didn't know much about them. Also, I wasn't directly comparing them to my Fender bass. That being said, they are just two different animals. So different, that I would have considered getting one just to have a different sound. It reminded me of an Ernie Ball Stingray in that they would be good for a little bit heavier rock.

le veilleur non silencieux Actually, the 5-string versions of the American Deluxe Jazz & Precision Vs have a *Pau Ferro* fretboard, which is an oily wood like Rosewood but harder and punchier, but not as hard or as bright as Maple so "the best of both worlds" if you're a Rosewood fan. However, it's pretty rare these days and big increase in cost if you're having a Custom Bass made. I'm not a fan of *only* one fretboard wood. I tend to like Birdseye Maple on my Jazz Basses to bring a touch of 3-8kHv to give the very high frequencies a boost "naturally" from the fretboard wood before EQing it in, and Rosewood on my Spectors as they're bright enough with their Maple bodies and Necks, as well as their usual EMG DC Pickups. Interestingly, the American Deluxe Precision V that will always be "the one that got away" unless I have a Custom Bass specs made to it was a Maple fretboard & Swamp Ash body wood, and it sounded *fantastic* to my ears. Perhaps the Swamp Ash/Maple combination worked better together - it IS a go-to wood combination for Jazz Basses, especially very note-articulate midrange-scooped Fingerstyle and Slap/Pop techniques of playing. 🤔
