First year in which the Duels were lengthened from 125 miles/50 laps to our current 150 miles/60 laps. An extra 10 laps/25 miles makes the difference.

More people there on a Thursday afternoon than now attend the 500 since the reconstruction cut capacity in half. Sad how far Nascar has fallen from what it used to be. And by 2005 it had slipped a little from its mid/late 90's high water mark.

I always wondered why they chose top 35 for Cup and 30 for Busch/Nationwide/Xfinity? Personally I think it would have been better if they went with 30 in both. At least it would have allowed for more Race-in action. But that being said... I'd rather have the top 35 back over the charter system

The beginning of the horrible, short-sighted top 35 rule which made the Duels horribly confusing and not nearly as dramatic as they used to be.

GreatDarkWing0491 2nd year of NEXTEL which was the year of the sponsor getting to dictate what they wanted.

What was the previous rule? I was really little before '05, and thus never understood what "locked" a driver into a race prior to the top 35 rule

Before it was Top 38 in qualifying then 5 provisional based on points...during the duels it was Top 15 from each race then next 8 from qualifying times, then 5 provisionals.

Before that it was top 36 on speed, and even earlier than that it was top 25 were locked in on Q-Day 1 day, then positions 26-42 were set in round 2. Positions 26 on back could choose to qualify again on Day two if they so chose, but no matter the speed, they could start no better than 26th. Best known instance of this was at Indy in 2000. Ricky Rudd sat on pole on day 1. Day two saw Brett Bodine re-qualify and actually turn in a lap faster than Rudds pole speed, but because it was Day 2, he could only start 26th.
