As an ex mechanic and BMW X5 owner I have to say solving these kind of problems in this car is a pain in the ass. They have so many arms and bushes that fail and you can be changing parts one after another only to find the damn noise is still there. Even bmw specialists have the same problem. I’ve known diffs and transfer box to be changed and the noise still there!! I hate this part of owning this model

At higher mileage prepare to rebuild the internal guts of the transfer case and transmissions on these older xdrives. Which ain't cheap or simple. Driveshafts other difficult to reach rubber mounts, yup.

Sounds like the teeth inside the differential actuator are worn.. it has plastic gears that are prone to fail..

Me thinks internal transfer case wear (chain slop) possibly worn shaft splines. The plastic (actuator) gear (worn) would not be this audible (doubtful) but that plastic (actuator) gear is likely worn here. And this is not the u joint of the shaft. At higher mileage we are all looking at t case and trans full rebuilds unfortunately or just drive and live with it. 04x3 e83

Arnold Bartha no. I have replaced the front driveshaft so far (it was obviously bad)

so the drivetrain was ok? only the driveshaft mad that noise? my x3 starts to make that noise from 2000rpm to 3000 rpm

center drive shaft mount bearing is bad 100%

U joint is bad, you need a new front drive shaft.

Its not the u joint. Noise is to internals of transfer case itself (chain slop, splines). But the u joints also go bad but the sound is difference more of a shrill than clunk.

That drive shaft has quite a wobbly wobble. 😅
