Should not the car be lowered to a level position before checking the oil level?
@EngineeredMojo
@EngineeredMojo 3 жыл бұрын
@@liadbar-el8570 I don't understand the question in relation to the video. I don't check the oil level, but I do check for leaks. Car does not need to be level to check for leaks. For an oil change, I typically do not check the level as I know how much oil was put in the car, but if you had to check the level a flat surface would be best but would have a negligible effect on the reading unless your car is sitting at a high degree of angle

Went to a oil lube type place for the first time as a 18 y/o since i didn't have equipment or knowledge(living on a hill didn't help, could roll easily i think). They did the job however after about 1,000 miles oil light went on and 30 seconds later check engine went on too. Raced home to find out my engine didn't have much oil. Turns out the filter wasn't tightened up letting oil drain out slowly, had to park my car for a couple days thanks to that, currently trying to fix it with family. Now I'll just learn how to do my own shit, thanks for showing us how and having a good shot of the layout.

Oh yes, typically I will line up the jacket stands on a reinforced portion of side skirt or underneath a main car frame member (beefy steel tube or channel). Another idea : If someone is a first-timer, perhaps they don't have to take out the first drain plug from the oil pan. They just have to take out the filter. 80%+ of the oil will drain out anyway. The remaining old oil is too little to matter as it mixes with the new oil, and thus removing only one of the two possible drain points is sufficient for a first-timer. That way, the whole thing is less intimidating for the first-timer. They can do both the second time around. Or does only 50% drain if you do the filter first? In that case, nevermind.
@EngineeredMojo
@EngineeredMojo 4 жыл бұрын
That's a possibility, but I'd argue removing the oil filter is often tougher than removing drain plug haha. Given the relative simplicity of an oil change I'd advise draining from the drain slot to get it done.

Did you ever experience a cracked engine block with this Civic. I guess they had a recall for this civic 2006-2009. It happened to a lot of people.

Never happened to me thankfully. I plan to read up on this more to see if my car has already came in for recall work. Thanks for the info!

@@EngineeredMojo yeah you can call Honda and give them your VIN. I bought a 2006 last April and I pray she will be okay.

Not every model made was affected. Keep an eye on the coolant but I wouldn't worry too much. I believe it was the ones made a certain factories in the us where they didn't cast the block correctly. Here in Australia I see heaps of these going around but haven't heard of that issue affecting the Australian models touch wood

You cound punch a hole in the bottom of the oil filter with a screwdriver after loosening. first before removal. So it drains.

I haven’t tried since the last time I tried because I couldn’t get the oil drain plug off. The bolt was stripped apparently
@EngineeredMojo
@EngineeredMojo 2 жыл бұрын
Tough luck on stripped bolt, maybe try a bolt extractor socket! It's super helpful tool and usually has more success on larger bolts

Is it a necessity to replace the filter and the washer on the plug during each oil change?
@EngineeredMojo
@EngineeredMojo 5 жыл бұрын
The filter yes everytime. The washer you are supposed to change everytime to avoid possible leak at drain plug but if I forget to pick up a washer I'll reuse old washer. Not the end of the world and rare you'll see a leak. If it does leak though you've wasted an oil change since you'll have to redrain pan. Small risk though

I have changed the oil in my Jeep Cherokee for 20 years and never replaced the washer on the drain plug and never had it leak. They say to do it, but really not necessary every time I would suggest.

Thank you very much for this, unfortunately I don't trust auto repair mechanics as much as I would like to. At the very least oil change and air filter change is something I can do.

Same here, I don't trust the fast places that don't have actual trained mechanics e.g. the tire and lube places. It's hit and miss to find a person who shows pride and care for the customer's vehicles.

Plan on doing my first oil change on a 2011 Civic in a few days with the help of a friend, how do I know when to stop putting oil in?
@EngineeredMojo
@EngineeredMojo 4 жыл бұрын
I typically put in a 1/4 of a quart under the specified oil capacity given there will always be a small amount of left over oil in the engine. Then I double check level level with the oil dipstick to verify amount of oil in the vehicle. You don't need to be exact, but you don't want to be short or over by a large amount.

Can you link where you got the jack from? I keep finding ones with bad reviews - maybe I should buy one in store.

or let me know what kind of jack and jack stands those are.
@EngineeredMojo
@EngineeredMojo 4 жыл бұрын
No problem, those jacks are from Walmart or Harbor Freight. Fairly basic no need to break the bank as long as the catch mechanism is solidly made. The jack is craftsman brand their 3 ton jack. It's a nice jack, purchased a few years ago during Black Friday for around $60. Sears are out of business around my way so it may be tough to find if there isn't a Sears open near you. I also use a harbor freight low profile jack for lowered vehicles. It's a good jack as well, but it's hit or miss if the box will have all the lock washers! Only complaint about Harbor Freight items. I had to return to store to get all pieces, but after that it's been great and has held up well.

What if you can't take the motor oil cap off to add more oil what do I do
@EngineeredMojo

I'd try to use a rubber glove or a large plier to wrap around cap to take it off. There's is really no good way to fill oil except through the fill hole unfortunately for this type of car
